# AlAdhan

> Islamic prayer times, the Hijri calendar and the Qibla, from the free AlAdhan API. Get a day's prayer times or the next prayer due for any city, address or set of coordinates, publish a month, a year or the whole of Ramadan as a timetable, convert dates between the Gregorian and Hijri calendars, look up Islamic holidays and special days, find the compass bearing to the Kaaba, and read the ninety-nine names of Allah. Twenty-three calculation methods are supported, along with the Hanafi Asr, high-latitude rules and per-prayer minute adjustments. No account or API key is required.

## Actions

### Convert a date to the Hijri calendar

Turn a Gregorian date into its Hijri one, with the day of the week in English and Arabic and any holiday that falls on it. Leave the date empty for today, so a scheduled workflow can post the Hijri date each morning with nothing filled in.

**Inputs**

- Date (`date`, date): The Gregorian date to convert. Leave empty for today.
- Hijri calendar method (`calendar_method`, text): How a Gregorian date is turned into a Hijri one. Defaults to the High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia, which is what aladhan.com itself shows. Run 'List Hijri calendar methods' to see what each covers. One of: `HJCoSA` (High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia (default)), `UAQ` (Umm al-Qura), `DIYANET` (Diyanet Isleri Baskanligi, Turkey), `MATHEMATICAL` (Mathematical calculation).
- Day adjustment (`adjustment`, number): Shift the converted Hijri date by whole days, from -5 to 5, for a local moon sighting that ran a day ahead or behind. AlAdhan applies it only under the Mathematical calendar method, so choose that method too. From -5 to 5.

**Outputs**

- `gregorian` (object)
- `gregorian_date` (text)
- `hijri` (object)
- `hijri_date` (text)
- `hijri_described` (text)
- `holidays` (list)
- `is_holiday` (true/false)
- `requested_date` (text)

**Example output**

### Convert a Hijri date to the Gregorian calendar

Turn a Hijri date into its Gregorian one. Pick the day, month and year separately so there is no date format to get right, and the Gregorian date comes back ready to drop into the date field of a later step.

**Inputs**

- Hijri day (`hijri_day`, number, required): The day of the Hijri month, from 1 to 30. A Hijri month never has thirty-one days. From 1 to 30.
- Hijri month (`hijri_month`, text, required): The month of the Hijri calendar. One of: `1` (1. Muharram), `2` (2. Safar), `3` (3. Rabi al-awwal), `4` (4. Rabi al-thani), `5` (5. Jumada al-ula), `6` (6. Jumada al-akhirah), `7` (7. Rajab), `8` (8. Shaban), `9` (9. Ramadan), `10` (10. Shawwal), `11` (11. Dhu al-Qadah), `12` (12. Dhu al-Hijjah).
- Hijri year (`hijri_year`, number, required): The Hijri year, from 1356 AH to 1500 AH, which is the range AlAdhan's calendars are tabulated for. Run 'Get the current Islamic date' if you need to know which year it is now. From 1356 to 1500.
### Get a Hijri month or year of prayer times

Get every day's prayer times for a Hijri month, or for a whole Hijri year when the month is left empty. This is the action that answers 'the timetable for the whole of Ramadan' in one step: choose Ramadan and the year, and each day comes back with both its Hijri and its Gregorian date.

**Inputs**

- Hijri year (`hijri_year`, number, required): The Hijri year, from 1356 AH to 1500 AH, which is the range AlAdhan's calendars are tabulated for. Run 'Get the current Islamic date' if you need to know which year it is now. From 1356 to 1500.
- Hijri month (`hijri_month`, text): The month of the Hijri calendar. Leave empty for the whole year, which is around 355 days of prayer times in one step. One of: `1` (1. Muharram), `2` (2. Safar), `3` (3. Rabi al-awwal), `4` (4. Rabi al-thani), `5` (5. Jumada al-ula), `6` (6. Jumada al-akhirah), `7` (7. Rajab), `8` (8. Shaban), `9` (9. Ramadan), `10` (10. Shawwal), `11` (11. Dhu al-Qadah), `12` (12. Dhu al-Hijjah).
- City (`city`, text): Fill in one of three ways to name the place: a city and its country, an address, or a latitude and longitude. The city, used together with the country below.
- Country (`country`, text): The country the city is in. Required whenever a city is given. One of: `AF` (Afghanistan), `AL` (Albania), `DZ` (Algeria), `AD` (Andorra), `AO` (Angola), `AI` (Anguilla), `AQ` (Antarctica), `AG` (Antigua & Barbuda), `AR` (Argentina), `AM` (Armenia), and 239 more.
- State or region (`state`, text): Optional, and only useful alongside a city: it tells apart the places that share a name, such as Springfield in Illinois and Springfield in Missouri.
- Address (`address`, text): Fill in one of three ways to name the place: a city and its country, an address, or a latitude and longitude. A street address, a postcode or a place written as one line. Use it when you have an address rather than a city.
- Latitude (`latitude`, number): Fill in one of three ways to name the place: a city and its country, an address, or a latitude and longitude. Latitude in decimal degrees, from -90 to 90. Coordinates are the exact way to name a place, and the only one that reports the position back unmasked. From -90 to 90.
- Longitude (`longitude`, number): Longitude in decimal degrees, from -180 to 180. The Americas take a negative longitude. From -180 to 180.
- Calculation method (`method`, text): Which authority's angles to compute the times with. Leave empty and AlAdhan uses the authority closest to the place, which is right far more often than a guess. Run 'List calculation methods' to see the angles each one sets. One of: `0` (Shia Ithna-Ashari, Leva Institute, Qum), `1` (University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi), `2` (Islamic Society of North America (ISNA)), `3` (Muslim World League), `4` (Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah), `5` (Egyptian General Authority of Survey), `7` (Institute of Geophysics, University of Tehran), `8` (Gulf Region), `9` (Kuwait), `10` (Qatar), and 13 more.
- Asr calculation (`school`, text): Which juristic method places Asr. The Hanafi position puts it later in the afternoon than the other three schools. Defaults to the majority position. One of: `0` (Shafi, Maliki and Hanbali (the majority position)), `1` (Hanafi (Asr later in the afternoon)).
- Midnight calculation (`midnight_mode`, text): Where midnight falls: halfway from sunset to sunrise, or halfway from sunset to Fajr. Defaults to the first. One of: `0` (Standard: halfway from sunset to sunrise), `1` (Jafari: halfway from sunset to Fajr).
- High latitude rule (`high_latitude_rule`, text): What to do where the sun never drops far enough below the horizon for Fajr and Isha to have a true time, which is most of northern Europe in summer. Only worth setting above roughly 48 degrees of latitude. One of: `1` (Middle of the night), `2` (One seventh of the night), `3` (Angle based).
- Shafaq (`shafaq`, text): Which twilight places Isha. Applies only to the Moonsighting Committee Worldwide method, and is ignored with any other, so it is sent only when that method is chosen. One of: `general`, `ahmer` (Ahmer: the red twilight), `abyad` (Abyad: the white twilight).
- Timezone (`timezone`, text): The timezone to report the times in. Leave empty and AlAdhan works it out from the place, which is almost always what you want. It also decides what 'today' means when the date is left blank. One of: `UTC`, `Africa/Abidjan`, `Africa/Accra`, `Africa/Addis_Ababa` (Africa/Addis Ababa), `Africa/Algiers`, `Africa/Asmara`, `Africa/Bamako`, `Africa/Bangui`, `Africa/Banjul`, `Africa/Bissau`, and 439 more.
- Adjust Imsak (`tune_imsak`, number): Minutes to shift Imsak by, from -120 to 120. Imsak is the end of the pre-dawn meal. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Fajr (`tune_fajr`, number): Minutes to shift Fajr by, from -120 to 120. A local mosque commonly runs a minute or two later. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Sunrise (`tune_sunrise`, number): Minutes to shift Sunrise by, from -120 to 120. Sunrise ends the time for Fajr. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Dhuhr (`tune_dhuhr`, number): Minutes to shift Dhuhr by, from -120 to 120. Dhuhr is the midday prayer. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Asr (`tune_asr`, number): Minutes to shift Asr by, from -120 to 120. Asr is the afternoon prayer. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Maghrib (`tune_maghrib`, number): Minutes to shift Maghrib by, from -120 to 120. Maghrib is the sunset prayer. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Sunset (`tune_sunset`, number): Minutes to shift Sunset by, from -120 to 120. Sunset is the marker Maghrib is measured from. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Isha (`tune_isha`, number): Minutes to shift Isha by, from -120 to 120. Isha is the night prayer. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Midnight (`tune_midnight`, number): Minutes to shift Midnight by, from -120 to 120. Midnight marks the last third of the night. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.

### Get a month or year of prayer times

Get every day's prayer times for a Gregorian month, or for a whole year when the month is left empty. Use it to publish a timetable rather than a single day. The answer is one list of days in date order whichever was asked for, with a per-month breakdown beside it.

**Inputs**

- Year (`year`, number): The Gregorian year. Leave empty for the current year. From 1000 to 9999.
- Month (`month`, text): The Gregorian month. Leave empty for the whole year, which is 365 days of prayer times in one step. ### Get a Qibla compass image

Get a compass picture marking the Qibla from a set of coordinates, as an image address to put in a message or a page. The picture is checked and described rather than downloaded, so the step returns a link rather than a hundred and fifty kilobytes of image.

**Inputs**

- Latitude (`latitude`, number, required): Latitude in decimal degrees, from -90 to 90. From -90 to 90.
- Longitude (`longitude`, number, required): Longitude in decimal degrees, from -180 to 180. The Americas take a negative longitude. From -180 to 180.

**Outputs**

- `content_type` (text)
- `image_url` (text)
- `latitude` (number)
- `longitude` (number)
- `size_bytes` (number)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "content_type": "image/png",
  "image_url": "https://api.aladhan.com/v1/qibla/51.50853/-0.12574/compass",
### Get prayer times between two dates
Get every day's prayer times between two dates, for a span that doesn't line up with a calendar month: a trip, a term, or the week ahead. AlAdhan returns at most eleven months in one call, and a longer range is refused with the limit named.
**Inputs**
- Start date (`date_start`, date, required): First day of the range.
- End date (`date_end`, date, required): Last day of the range, at most eleven months after the start date.
- City (`city`, text): Fill in one of three ways to name the place: a city and its country, an address, or a latitude and longitude. The city, used together with the country below.
- Country (`country`, text): The country the city is in. Required whenever a city is given. One of: `AF` (Afghanistan), `AL` (Albania), `DZ` (Algeria), `AD` (Andorra), `AO` (Angola), `AI` (Anguilla), `AQ` (Antarctica), `AG` (Antigua & Barbuda), `AR` (Argentina), `AM` (Armenia), and 239 more.
- State or region (`state`, text): Optional, and only useful alongside a city: it tells apart the places that share a name, such as Springfield in Illinois and Springfield in Missouri.
- Address (`address`, text): Fill in one of three ways to name the place: a city and its country, an address, or a latitude and longitude. A street address, a postcode or a place written as one line. Use it when you have an address rather than a city.
- Latitude (`latitude`, number): Fill in one of three ways to name the place: a city and its country, an address, or a latitude and longitude. Latitude in decimal degrees, from -90 to 90. Coordinates are the exact way to name a place, and the only one that reports the position back unmasked. From -90 to 90.
- Longitude (`longitude`, number): Longitude in decimal degrees, from -180 to 180. The Americas take a negative longitude. From -180 to 180.
- Calculation method (`method`, text): Which authority's angles to compute the times with. Leave empty and AlAdhan uses the authority closest to the place, which is right far more often than a guess. Run 'List calculation methods' to see the angles each one sets. One of: `0` (Shia Ithna-Ashari, Leva Institute, Qum), `1` (University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi), `2` (Islamic Society of North America (ISNA)), `3` (Muslim World League), `4` (Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah), `5` (Egyptian General Authority of Survey), `7` (Institute of Geophysics, University of Tehran), `8` (Gulf Region), `9` (Kuwait), `10` (Qatar), and 13 more.
- Asr calculation (`school`, text): Which juristic method places Asr. The Hanafi position puts it later in the afternoon than the other three schools. Defaults to the majority position. One of: `0` (Shafi, Maliki and Hanbali (the majority position)), `1` (Hanafi (Asr later in the afternoon)).
- Midnight calculation (`midnight_mode`, text): Where midnight falls: halfway from sunset to sunrise, or halfway from sunset to Fajr. Defaults to the first. One of: `0` (Standard: halfway from sunset to sunrise), `1` (Jafari: halfway from sunset to Fajr).
- High latitude rule (`high_latitude_rule`, text): What to do where the sun never drops far enough below the horizon for Fajr and Isha to have a true time, which is most of northern Europe in summer. Only worth setting above roughly 48 degrees of latitude. One of: `1` (Middle of the night), `2` (One seventh of the night), `3` (Angle based).
- Shafaq (`shafaq`, text): Which twilight places Isha. Applies only to the Moonsighting Committee Worldwide method, and is ignored with any other, so it is sent only when that method is chosen. One of: `general`, `ahmer` (Ahmer: the red twilight), `abyad` (Abyad: the white twilight).
- Timezone (`timezone`, text): The timezone to report the times in. Leave empty and AlAdhan works it out from the place, which is almost always what you want. It also decides what 'today' means when the date is left blank. One of: `UTC`, `Africa/Abidjan`, `Africa/Accra`, `Africa/Addis_Ababa` (Africa/Addis Ababa), `Africa/Algiers`, `Africa/Asmara`, `Africa/Bamako`, `Africa/Bangui`, `Africa/Banjul`, `Africa/Bissau`, and 439 more.
- Hijri calendar method (`calendar_method`, text): How a Gregorian date is turned into a Hijri one. Defaults to the High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia, which is what aladhan.com itself shows. Run 'List Hijri calendar methods' to see what each covers. One of: `HJCoSA` (High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia (default)), `UAQ` (Umm al-Qura), `DIYANET` (Diyanet Isleri Baskanligi, Turkey), `MATHEMATICAL` (Mathematical calculation).
- Adjust Imsak (`tune_imsak`, number): Minutes to shift Imsak by, from -120 to 120. Imsak is the end of the pre-dawn meal. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Fajr (`tune_fajr`, number): Minutes to shift Fajr by, from -120 to 120. A local mosque commonly runs a minute or two later. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Sunrise (`tune_sunrise`, number): Minutes to shift Sunrise by, from -120 to 120. Sunrise ends the time for Fajr. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Dhuhr (`tune_dhuhr`, number): Minutes to shift Dhuhr by, from -120 to 120. Dhuhr is the midday prayer. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Asr (`tune_asr`, number): Minutes to shift Asr by, from -120 to 120. Asr is the afternoon prayer. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Maghrib (`tune_maghrib`, number): Minutes to shift Maghrib by, from -120 to 120. Maghrib is the sunset prayer. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Sunset (`tune_sunset`, number): Minutes to shift Sunset by, from -120 to 120. Sunset is the marker Maghrib is measured from. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Isha (`tune_isha`, number): Minutes to shift Isha by, from -120 to 120. Isha is the night prayer. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
- Adjust Midnight (`tune_midnight`, number): Minutes to shift Midnight by, from -120 to 120. Midnight marks the last third of the night. Leave empty for no adjustment. From -120 to 120.
### Get the Gregorian dates for a Hijri month
Get every day of a Hijri month with its Gregorian date and any holidays on it. This is how to find out which Gregorian dates Ramadan or Dhu al-Hijjah fall on in a given year.
**Inputs**
- Hijri month (`hijri_month`, text, required): The month of the Hijri calendar. One of: `1` (1. Muharram), `2` (2. Safar), `3` (3. Rabi al-awwal), `4` (4. Rabi al-thani), `5` (5. Jumada al-ula), `6` (6. Jumada al-akhirah), `7` (7. Rajab), `8` (8. Shaban), `9` (9. Ramadan), `10` (10. Shawwal), `11` (11. Dhu al-Qadah), `12` (12. Dhu al-Hijjah).
- Hijri year (`hijri_year`, number, required): The Hijri year, from 1356 AH to 1500 AH, which is the range AlAdhan's calendars are tabulated for. Run 'Get the current Islamic date' if you need to know which year it is now. From 1356 to 1500.
- Hijri calendar method (`calendar_method`, text): How a Gregorian date is turned into a Hijri one. Defaults to the High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia, which is what aladhan.com itself shows. Run 'List Hijri calendar methods' to see what each covers. One of: `HJCoSA` (High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia (default)), `UAQ` (Umm al-Qura), `DIYANET` (Diyanet Isleri Baskanligi, Turkey), `MATHEMATICAL` (Mathematical calculation).
- Day adjustment (`adjustment`, number): Shift the converted Hijri date by whole days, from -5 to 5, for a local moon sighting that ran a day ahead or behind. AlAdhan applies it only under the Mathematical calendar method, so choose that method too. From -5 to 5.
### Get the Hijri dates for a Gregorian month
Get every day of a Gregorian month with its Hijri date and any holidays on it. Use it to build a month view that shows both calendars, or to find which days of next month are observances.
**Inputs**
- Month (`month`, text, required): The Gregorian month to convert. One of: `1` (January), `2` (February), `3` (March), `4` (April), `5` (May), `6` (June), `7` (July), `8` (August), `9` (September), `10` (October), `11` (November), `12` (December).
- Year (`year`, number, required): The Gregorian year the month falls in. A Hijri month straddles two Gregorian ones, so the answer normally spans two of them. From 1000 to 9999.
- Hijri calendar method (`calendar_method`, text): How a Gregorian date is turned into a Hijri one. Defaults to the High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia, which is what aladhan.com itself shows. Run 'List Hijri calendar methods' to see what each covers. One of: `HJCoSA` (High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia (default)), `UAQ` (Umm al-Qura), `DIYANET` (Diyanet Isleri Baskanligi, Turkey), `MATHEMATICAL` (Mathematical calculation).
- Day adjustment (`adjustment`, number): Shift the converted Hijri date by whole days, from -5 to 5, for a local moon sighting that ran a day ahead or behind. AlAdhan applies it only under the Mathematical calendar method, so choose that method too. From -5 to 5.
**Outputs**
- `calendar` (text)
- `day_count` (number)
### Get the Hijri year of a Gregorian year's Ramadan
Find which Hijri year holds the Ramadan that falls in a given Gregorian year. A Hijri year is eleven days shorter than a Gregorian one, so the two drift: this is the lookup that turns 'Ramadan 2027' into the year number the calendar actions take.
**Inputs**
- Gregorian year (`year`, number): The Gregorian year Ramadan falls in. Leave empty for this year. From 1000 to 9999.
**Outputs**
- `gregorian_year` (number)
- `hijri_year` (number)
- `ramadan_month` (number)
- `ramadan_month_name` (text)
**Example output**
```json
{
  "gregorian_year": 2027,
  "hijri_year": 1448,
  "ramadan_month": 9,
  "ramadan_month_name": "Ramadan"

### Get the holidays on a Hijri day

Get the holidays that fall on one day of the Hijri calendar, such as the tenth of Dhu al-Hijjah. A day with nothing on it comes back as an empty list rather than as an error, so a workflow can check any day and branch on the answer.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number)
- `hijri_day` (number)
- `hijri_month` (number)
- `hijri_month_name` (text)
- `holidays` (list)
- `is_holiday` (true/false)

**Example output**

### Get the next Hijri holiday

Get the next holiday in the Hijri calendar, the Gregorian date it falls on and how many days there are until it. Run it on a schedule to announce what is coming without keeping a list of dates anywhere.

**Inputs**

- Hijri calendar method (`calendar_method`, text): How a Gregorian date is turned into a Hijri one. Defaults to the High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia, which is what aladhan.com itself shows. Run 'List Hijri calendar methods' to see what each covers. One of: `HJCoSA` (High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia (default)), `UAQ` (Umm al-Qura), `DIYANET` (Diyanet Isleri Baskanligi, Turkey), `MATHEMATICAL` (Mathematical calculation).

### Get the next prayer

Get the next prayer due at a place and how many minutes there are until it. Use it for the reminder a workflow actually sends: 'Maghrib in 20 minutes'. Name the place by city and country, by address, or by coordinates.

**Inputs**

- Date (`date`, date): The day to get times for. Leave empty for today in the place you asked about.

### Get the Qibla direction

Get the compass bearing from a set of coordinates to the Kaaba in Makkah. The answer carries the exact bearing, a rounded one, and the compass point it corresponds to, plus the address of a compass picture showing it.

**Inputs**

- Latitude (`latitude`, number, required): Latitude in decimal degrees, from -90 to 90. From -90 to 90.

### List a Hijri year's holidays

List every holiday of a Hijri year with the Gregorian date each one falls on. Use it to fill a calendar a year at a time. AlAdhan sends one entry per observance, so days that carry several are merged here and the count is a count of days.

**Inputs**

- Hijri year (`hijri_year`, number, required): The Hijri year, from 1356 AH to 1500 AH, which is the range AlAdhan's calendars are tabulated for. Run 'Get the current Islamic date' if you need to know which year it is now. From 1356 to 1500.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number)
- `first_date` (text)
- `hijri_year` (number)
- `holidays` (list)
- `last_date` (text)
- `name_count` (number)
