# Cleveland Museum of Art

> Search and read the Cleveland Museum of Art's collection: 68,000 catalogued works with the museum's own commentary, their provenance, their exhibition history, and published pictures of 41,000 of them at web, print and archival resolution. Find what is hanging in the galleries today, pull a piece of the collection at random for a daily post, look up the artists and the biographies the museum has written for them, or read through the 5,700 exhibitions it has staged since 1879. The data is public domain and about three works in five carry a CC0 picture that can be reused anywhere without asking. No account or key required.

## Actions

### Check the connection

Check the museum's Open Access API is answering and report how much is in it: how many works are catalogued, how many have been photographed, how many are hanging in the galleries today, and how many artists and exhibitions there are. Worth putting at the front of a workflow that will act on a count, and a quick way to see the connection is working.

**Inputs**: None.

**Outputs**

- `authentication` (text): What credentials are needed, which is none
- `base_url` (text)
- `counts` (object): Catalogued works, works with a picture, works on view, artists and exhibitions
- `licence` (text): What may be reused, and what may not
- `reachable` (true/false): True when the museum answered
- `source` (text)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "authentication": "None. The Open Access API is keyless and read only.",
  "base_url": "https://openaccess-api.clevelandart.org",
  "counts": {
    "artists": 9228,
    "artworks": 68771,
    "artworks_on_view": 6356,
    "artworks_with_a_picture": 41514,
    "exhibitions": 5715
  },
  "licence": "The data is CC0. Images are CC0 for works whose licence reads CC0, which is about three in five of them; the rest are still in copyright and are described but not pictured.",
  "reachable": true,
  "source": "The Cleveland Museum of Art Open Access API"
}
### Get a random artwork
Pick one work at random out of everything matching the filters, in full, for a piece of the collection a day. Narrow it to a department or a kind of object to keep a daily post on a theme. It draws from the whole of the collection rather than from the first page of it, so running it every morning gives a different work every morning.
**Inputs**
- Department (`department`, text): Which curatorial department holds the work. Leave blank for the whole collection. One of: `African Art`, `American Painting and Sculpture`, `Art of the Americas`, `Chinese Art`, `Contemporary Art`, `Decorative Art and Design`, `Drawings`, `Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern Art`, `European Painting and Sculpture`, `Greek and Roman Art`, and 10 more.
- Kind of object (`object_type`, text): What sort of thing it is: a painting, a print, a suit of armour. Leave blank for everything. One of: `Amulets`, `Apparatus`, `Arms and Armor`, `Basketry`, `Book Binding`, `Bound Volume`, `Calligraphy`, `Carpet`, `Ceramic`, `Coins`, and 50 more.
- Only include (`only`, text): Narrow what it picks from. 'Has a picture' is worth keeping for anything that will be posted or emailed: without it, two works in five come back with nothing to show. One or more of: `on_view` (On view in the galleries), `with_image` (Has a picture), `highlights` (Collection highlights), `recently_acquired` (Acquired in the last three years), `on_loan` (Out on loan), `with_3d_model` (Has a 3D model), `nazi_era_provenance` (Nazi era provenance). Default: `["with_image"]`.
- Image rights (`licence`, text): Public domain works can be reproduced anywhere without asking. Works still in copyright are catalogued in full but their pictures are not published. Leave blank for both. One of: `public_domain` (Public domain (CC0)), `in_copyright` (Still in copyright).
**Outputs**
- `artwork` (object)
- `chosen_from` (number): How many works it picked from
- `filters_applied` (object): The filters that actually reached the museum
Takes the accession number printed on the wall label, or the id any search here returns.
**Inputs**
- Artwork (`artwork`, text, required): The accession number from the wall label or the museum's website, such as 1958.39, or the 'artwork_id' a search returned. Either works.
**Outputs**
- `artwork` (object)
### Get an exhibition
Fetch one exhibition with its dates, everywhere it travelled and the checklist of works the museum lent or showed, each with its accession number. Use it to turn an exhibition into a reading list, or to follow a work's history back through the shows it has been in.
**Inputs**
- Exhibition ID (`exhibition_id`, number, required): The museum's id for the exhibition. Comes from 'Search exhibitions', or from the exhibition history on any artwork. From 1 to 100000000.
- Include the works shown (`include_artworks`, true/false): Include the checklist of works. On by default, because the checklist is usually the reason for asking about one exhibition. Turn it off for just the dates and venues. Default: `true`.
**Outputs**
- `exhibition` (object)
**Example output**
```json

### Search artists

Find the artists and makers behind the collection by name, nationality, lifetime, or a word in the biography the museum has written for them. Use it to settle who the museum holds before going looking for their work, and to get the id 'Get an artist' takes.

**Inputs**

- Name (`name`, text): Part or all of the artist's name. Leave blank to list everyone matching the other filters.
- Nationality (`nationality`, text): A word from the artist's nationality.
- Words in the biography (`biography`, text): A word to look for in the museum's biography of the artist. This is how to find the artists tied to a place, a school or a workshop.
- Born after (year) (`born_after`, number): Only artists born after this year, not counting the year itself. To catch a single year, set this to the year before and 'Born before' to the year after. From -5000 to 2100.
- Born before (year) (`born_before`, number): Only artists born before this year, not counting the year itself. From -5000 to 2100.
- Died after (year) (`died_after`, number): Only artists who died after this year, not counting the year itself. An artist with no death year recorded is left out by either of these. From -5000 to 2100.
- Died before (year) (`died_before`, number): Only artists who died before this year, not counting the year itself. From -5000 to 2100.
- How many to return (`limit`, number): How many results to return, from 1 to 100. Defaults to 10. From 1 to 100. Default: `10`.
- Skip (`offset`, number): How many results to skip before returning any, for paging through a long list. Feed the 'next_offset' from a previous run back in here to get the following page. Defaults to 0. From 0 to 1000000. Default: `0`.

**Outputs**

- `artists` (list)
- `filters_applied` (object): The filters that actually reached the museum
- `has_more` (true/false): Whether another page follows
- `next_offset` (number): Feed this back in as 'Skip' for the next page
- `offset` (number): How many were skipped
- `page_size` (number): How many were asked for
- `result_count` (number): How many came back
- `total_count` (number): How many match in all, across every page

**Example output**

```json
{
  "artists": [
    {
      "artist_id": 1844,
      "artwork_count": 21,
      "biography": "Claude Monet spent his youth in Le Havre in Normandy, where his father worked as a wholesale grocer.",
### Search artworks
Search the museum's 68,000 catalogued works by subject, artist, department, materials, date and much else. Every result carries its caption, its credit line, whether it is hanging today and, for the 41,000 works the museum has photographed, links to the picture at three sizes. About three works in five are public domain, so their pictures can be used anywhere without asking.
**Inputs**
- Search words (`query`, text): Words to look for across the title, the artist, the museum's commentary and much of the rest of the record. Leave blank to list everything matching the filters.
- Artist (`artist`, text): Part or all of an artist's name. This matches the maker credited on the work, where search words would also match works merely mentioning them.
- Department (`department`, text): Which curatorial department holds the work. Leave blank for the whole collection. One of: `African Art`, `American Painting and Sculpture`, `Art of the Americas`, `Chinese Art`, `Contemporary Art`, `Decorative Art and Design`, `Drawings`, `Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern Art`, `European Painting and Sculpture`, `Greek and Roman Art`, and 10 more.
- Kind of object (`object_type`, text): What sort of thing it is: a painting, a print, a suit of armour. Leave blank for everything. One of: `Amulets`, `Apparatus`, `Arms and Armor`, `Basketry`, `Book Binding`, `Bound Volume`, `Calligraphy`, `Carpet`, `Ceramic`, `Coins`, and 50 more.
- Materials (`materials`, text): What the work is made of or how it was made, in the museum's own words.
- Gallery (`gallery`, text): The number of one room in the museum, for working out what is in it. The number is the first part of the 'gallery' each result reports.
- Made in or after (year) (`made_after`, number): Only works made in or after this year. Use a negative year for BCE: the collection reaches back about five thousand years. From -5000 to 2100.
- Made in or before (year) (`made_before`, number): Only works made in or before this year. From -5000 to 2100.
- Artist groups (`artist_groups`, text): How the museum groups the artists it holds. Choosing more than one narrows to artists in all of them, so 'Women artists' with 'Cleveland School' finds the women of that school rather than both groups together. One or more of: `women` (Women artists), `men` (Men artists), `gender_not_recorded` (Gender not recorded), `black_american` (Black American artists), `asian_american` (Asian American artists), `lgbtq` (LGBTQ+ artists), `jewish` (Jewish artists), `latine_and_hispanic` (Latine and Hispanic artists), `indigenous` (Indigenous artists), `cia_alumni` (Cleveland Institute of Art alumni), `cleveland_school` (Cleveland School), `may_show` (Shown in a CMA May Show).
- Only include (`only`, text): Narrow the results to works that are all of these. 'On view in the galleries' is the one for planning a visit: about one work in ten is hanging at any time. 'Has a picture' matters whenever the result is going into an email or a post. One or more of: `on_view` (On view in the galleries), `with_image` (Has a picture), `highlights` (Collection highlights), `recently_acquired` (Acquired in the last three years), `on_loan` (Out on loan), `with_3d_model` (Has a 3D model), `nazi_era_provenance` (Nazi era provenance).
- Image rights (`licence`, text): Public domain works can be reproduced anywhere without asking. Works still in copyright are catalogued in full but their pictures are not published. Leave blank for both. One of: `public_domain` (Public domain (CC0)), `in_copyright` (Still in copyright).
- Sort by (`sort`, text): What order to return them in. Leave blank for the museum's own order, which ranks by relevance when there are search words. The museum's index cannot sort by title or by the date a work was made, so those are not offered: use 'Made in or after' to narrow by date instead. One of: `newest_acquisitions` (Newest acquisitions first), `oldest_acquisitions` (Oldest acquisitions first), `accession_number` (Accession number), `department`, `gallery`, `object_type` (Kind of object).
- Catalogue updated since (`updated_since`, date): Only works whose catalogue record has changed since this date. For keeping a copy of the collection in step with the museum's daily update.
- How many to return (`limit`, number): How many results to return, from 1 to 100. Defaults to 10. From 1 to 100. Default: `10`.
- Skip (`offset`, number): How many results to skip before returning any, for paging through a long list. Feed the 'next_offset' from a previous run back in here to get the following page. Defaults to 0. From 0 to 1000000. Default: `0`.
### Search exhibitions
Search the 5,700 exhibitions the museum has staged or lent to since 1879, by title, by who organized them, by where they travelled, and by when they ran. Set 'When' to what is on now for a visit, or give a date range to look at a particular period.
**Inputs**
- Title (`title`, text): Part or all of the exhibition's title. Leave blank to list everything matching the other filters.
- When (`period`, text): Which exhibitions to return, worked out against today's date. Defaults to any time, which is the whole history. One of: `any` (Any time), `on_now` (On now), `opening_later` (Opening later), `closed` (Already closed). Default: `any`.
- Organizer (`organizer`, text): Part of the name of the museum or body that put the show together.
- Venue (`venue`, text): Part of the name of a place the exhibition was shown, which for a travelling show is often not the organizer.
- Opened on or after (`opened_after`, date): Only exhibitions that opened on or after this date.
- Opened on or before (`opened_before`, date): Only exhibitions that opened on or before this date. Use it with the one above to read a single season or decade.
- Include the works shown (`include_artworks`, true/false): Include the list of works shown in each exhibition. The museum warns this is a slower query, so it is off unless you need the checklist. Default: `false`.
- How many to return (`limit`, number): How many results to return, from 1 to 100. Defaults to 10. From 1 to 100. Default: `10`.
- Skip (`offset`, number): How many results to skip before returning any, for paging through a long list. Feed the 'next_offset' from a previous run back in here to get the following page. Defaults to 0. From 0 to 1000000. Default: `0`.
**Outputs**
- `exhibitions` (list)
- `filters_applied` (object): The filters that actually reached the museum, and the date 'When' was worked out against
- `has_more` (true/false): Whether another page follows
- `next_offset` (number): Feed this back in as 'Skip' for the next page
- `offset` (number): How many were skipped
- `page_size` (number): How many were asked for
- `result_count` (number): How many came back
- `total_count` (number): How many match in all, across every page
