# FDIC BankFind

> Look up any US bank from a workflow, straight from the FDIC. Find a bank by name, state or city, get its full record, and check in one step whether its deposits are FDIC-insured. Map its branches with addresses and coordinates, read its quarterly financials in dollars, see how much is on deposit at each branch, and trace what happened to it: who it merged with, what it used to be called, and whether it failed. Every failure since 1934 is here, as are industry totals for the whole country or one state, year by year. Names are resolved to the right bank rather than the closest-spelled one, figures come back in dollars, and dates come back as dates. Every action reads: nothing here changes anything. No account or API key required.

## Actions

### Check whether a bank is FDIC-insured

A plain yes or no on whether deposits at a bank are covered by FDIC insurance, with the date the cover began and a sentence you can send straight on to someone. Use it to gate a workflow: onboarding a vendor, checking where a payment is going, or verifying a customer's bank. A handful of institutions appear in the FDIC's register without being insured by it, and this separates them out rather than reading the field that says yes for every record. A bank that has closed answers no, and says where its accounts went.

**Inputs**

- Bank (`bank`, text, required): The bank, by name or by FDIC certificate number. A name is matched against every institution the FDIC has ever listed, so 'Wells Fargo' finds Wells Fargo Bank rather than one of its smaller namesakes, and a bank that has closed is found too. If a name genuinely fits two banks equally well the step stops and names both with their certificate numbers, so an answer is never about the wrong bank.

**Outputs**

- `answer` (text): The answer in a sentence, ready to send on
- `certificate_number` (number): Its FDIC certificate number
- `city` (text): Head office city
- `class_description` (text): What kind of institution it is, in words
- `closed_on` (text): The date it stopped operating
- `fdic_page` (text): The FDIC's own page for this bank
- `insurance_fund` (text): The fund that stands behind its deposits
- `insured_since` (text): The date its deposit insurance began
- `is_fdic_insured` (true/false): True only when the bank is open and its deposits are insured
- `is_open` (true/false): Whether it is still operating
- `name` (text): The bank's legal name
- `other_matches` (list): Other banks the name also matched, if any
- `state` (text): Two-letter state code
- `state_name` (text): State name
- `successor` (object): The bank its accounts went to, if it closed

**Example output**

### Find banks

Search the FDIC's register of every US bank, by name, by state, by city, by size, or by any combination of them. Each result carries the bank's FDIC certificate number, address, website, regulator, total assets and deposits, and the date it opened, so one step answers 'which banks are in this town' or 'who are the ten largest banks in Texas'. Banks that have closed can be included, which is how you find a bank that was merged away years ago.

**Inputs**

- Bank name (`name`, text): All or part of a bank's name. Banks whose name does not really match are left out, so a search never comes back with a bank that has nothing to do with what you typed.
- State (`state`, text): Limit the results to one US state or territory. One of: `AL` (Alabama), `AK` (Alaska), `AZ` (Arizona), `AR` (Arkansas), `CA` (California), `CO` (Colorado), `CT` (Connecticut), `DE` (Delaware), `DC` (District of Columbia), `FL` (Florida), and 49 more.
- City (`city`, text): Limit the results to one city, spelled as the FDIC does: 'New York', 'Sioux Falls'. Match it with the state when a city name is used in more than one.
- Which banks (`status`, text): Open banks only, unless you say otherwise. Include closed banks to find one that has since merged or failed. One of: `open` (Banks that are still open), `closed` (Banks that have closed), `any` (Open and closed banks).
- Smallest bank to include (`minimum_assets`, number): Leave out banks holding less than this, in dollars. Use 1000000000 for banks over a billion.
- Order (`order`, text): Largest first unless you say otherwise. One of: `largest` (Largest first), `smallest` (Smallest first), `name` (By name, A to Z).
- How many to return (`limit`, number): How many rows to bring back. 50 unless you say otherwise, and 1,000 at most. The result always says how many matched altogether, so a short list is never mistaken for the whole answer. From 1 to 1000. Default: `50`.

**Outputs**

- `banks` (list): The banks that matched
- `city` (text): The city that was searched
- `count` (number): How many are in this result
- `more_available` (true/false): Whether more matched than were returned
- `searched_for` (text): The name that was searched
- `state` (text): The state that was searched
- `state_name` (text): That state's name
- `status` (text): Which banks were included
- `total_matches` (number): How many matched altogether

### Get a bank's details

Everything the FDIC holds on one bank, from a name or a certificate number: where its head office is, its website, the date it opened and the date its deposit insurance began, who regulates it, what kind of charter it holds, its holding company, how many offices it runs, and its latest assets, deposits and returns. If the bank has closed, the result says when and names the bank its business went to, so 'what happened to my old bank' is answered in one step.

### Get a bank's offices and trade names

How big a bank's footprint is and what it calls itself: how many offices it runs, how many of them are full-service, how many states it operates in, whether it is a minority depository institution, every website it publishes, and the other names it trades under. That last one matters more than it sounds: plenty of online-only brands are a division of a bank with a different name, and this is where the FDIC records the connection. Four quarters unless you ask for more, so you can see a network growing or shrinking.

- As of (`as_of_date`, date): Read the quarters up to this date rather than the latest ones.
- How many quarters (`periods`, number): How many quarters to bring back, newest first. Four unless you say otherwise, and 40 at most. From 1 to 40. Default: `4`.

**Outputs**

- `as_of_date` (text): The cut-off date that was used
- `bank` (object)
- `count` (number): How many quarters are in this result
- `latest` (object)
- `periods` (list): One row per quarter, newest first
- `total_periods_on_file` (number): How many quarters the FDIC holds for this bank

### Get a bank's quarterly financials

A bank's quarterly call report figures, newest first, in dollars rather than the thousands the FDIC publishes: assets, deposits, loans, equity, tier 1 capital, net income, return on assets and equity, net interest margin, the efficiency ratio, noncurrent loans and net charge-offs. Four quarters unless you ask for more, and the result also gives the latest quarter on its own and how the headline figures moved since the quarter before, so a step can watch a bank's position without doing the arithmetic.

- As of (`as_of_date`, date): Read the quarters up to this date rather than the latest ones. Any date works; it snaps back to the last quarter that had been filed by then.
- How many quarters (`quarters`, number): How many quarters to bring back, newest first. Four unless you say otherwise, and 40 at most. From 1 to 40. Default: `4`.

**Outputs**

- `as_of_date` (text): The cut-off date that was used
- `bank` (object)
- `change_since_previous_quarter` (object): How the headline figures moved since the quarter before
- `count` (number): How many quarters are in this result
- `latest` (object)

### Get banking industry totals by year

How many FDIC-insured banks there were and what they held, for the whole country or for one state, year by year back to 1934: banks, offices, assets, deposits, loans, equity, net income and staff. The FDIC publishes commercial banks and savings institutions as separate rows, which is why a straight reading of the file under-counts the industry by a few hundred banks; this adds them together and keeps the split beside the total. The latest published year unless you pick a range.

**Inputs**

- Place (`state`, text): The whole country unless you pick a state or territory. One of: `USA` (Nationwide (all states and territories)), `AL` (Alabama), `AK` (Alaska), `AZ` (Arizona), `AR` (Arkansas), `CA` (California), `CO` (Colorado), `CT` (Connecticut), `DE` (Delaware), `DC` (District of Columbia), and 50 more.
- From year (`from_year`, text): The earliest year to include. Leave both years blank for the latest published year on its own.
- To year (`to_year`, text): The latest year to include. Leave it blank to run up to the most recent published year.
- How many to return (`limit`, number): How many rows to bring back. 50 unless you say otherwise, and 1,000 at most. The result always says how many matched altogether, so a short list is never mistaken for the whole answer. From 1 to 1000. Default: `50`.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number): How many years are in this result
- `from_year` (number): The earliest year included
- `latest` (object)
- `note` (text): How the commercial bank and savings institution rows were combined
- `state` (text): The place that was read
- `state_name` (text): That place in words
- `to_year` (number): The latest year included
- `years` (list): One row per year, newest first

### List branch offices

Every branch office on the FDIC's register, for one bank, one place, or one bank in one place. Each office comes back with its street address, county, latitude and longitude, the date it opened, and what it does, so you can map a bank's network or answer 'which banks have a branch in this ZIP code'. Narrow to head offices, to full-service branches you can walk into, or to limited-service ones. Name at least a bank or a place: the register holds about 78,000 offices.

**Inputs**

- Bank (`bank`, text): Narrow to one bank, by name or by FDIC certificate number. Leave it blank to include every bank in the place you name below.
- ZIP code (`zip_code`, text): Limit the results to one five-digit ZIP code.
- County (`county`, text): Limit the results to one county, named without the word 'County': 'Teton', 'Cook'.
- Which offices (`office_type`, text): Every office unless you say otherwise. Each result says exactly what kind of office it is either way. One of: `all` (Every office), `main` (Head office only), `full_service` (Full-service branches only (where you can walk in and bank)), `limited_service` (Limited-service offices only (drive-through, loan production, trust)).
- How many to return (`limit`, number): How many rows to bring back. 50 unless you say otherwise, and 1,000 at most. The result always says how many matched altogether, so a short list is never mistaken for the whole answer. From 1 to 1000. Default: `50`.

**Outputs**

- `bank` (object)
- `branches` (list): The offices that matched
- `city` (text): The city that was searched
- `count` (number): How many are in this result
- `county` (text): The county that was searched
- `more_available` (true/false): Whether more matched than were returned

### List deposits held at each branch

How much money is on deposit at each branch, from the FDIC's Summary of Deposits, the survey every bank files on 30 June. This is the market-share question: who holds the deposits in this county, how much sits in this bank's branches in that state, which branch is its biggest. The total covers every matching branch rather than only the ones listed, so it is the real figure however short the list. The latest published survey is used unless you pick a year.

**Inputs**

- Bank (`bank`, text): Narrow to one bank, by name or by FDIC certificate number. Leave it blank to include every bank in the place you name below.
- County (`county`, text): Limit the results to one county, named without the word 'County'. This is how deposit market share is usually measured.
- City (`city`, text): Limit the results to one city, spelled as the FDIC does: 'New York', 'Sioux Falls'. Match it with the state when a city name is used in more than one.
- Survey year (`year`, text): Which year's survey to read. The most recent one unless you pick another.
- Order (`order`, text): Biggest branches first unless you say otherwise. One of: `largest` (Biggest branches first), `smallest` (Smallest branches first).

### List failed banks

Every US bank failure since the FDIC opened in 1934, and every bank it rescued while still open. Search by name, by state, or between two dates, and each one comes back with the date it failed, what it held at the time, how it was resolved and what the failure cost the insurance fund. Use it to watch a state, to check whether a bank in a list has failed, or to pull the record of a particular failure.

**Inputs**

- Bank name (`name`, text): All or part of a failed bank's name. Leave it blank to list failures by place or by date instead.
- Failed on or after (`failed_on_or_after`, date): Leave out anything that failed before this date. The record starts on 1 January 1934.
- Failed on or before (`failed_on_or_before`, date): Leave out anything that failed after this date.
- Order (`order`, text): Most recent first unless you say otherwise. One of: `newest` (Most recent first), `oldest` (Oldest first), `largest` (Largest first).
- How many to return (`limit`, number): How many rows to bring back. 50 unless you say otherwise, and 1,000 at most. The result always says how many matched altogether, so a short list is never mistaken for the whole answer. From 1 to 1000. Default: `50`.

**Outputs**

### List what has changed at a bank

The story of a bank, as the FDIC records it: who it merged with, what it used to be called, when it changed charter or regulator, when it failed, and when branches opened and closed. Each merger names the other bank in it, so reading one bank's record tells you which bank it absorbed rather than repeating its own name back. The default leaves branch openings and closings out, because a large bank has thousands of them and they bury the handful of things that happened to the bank itself.

- Which changes (`change_type`, text): Changes to the bank itself unless you say otherwise. The result says what the view leaves out. One of: `institution` (Changes to the bank itself (mergers, renames, closures)), `mergers` (Mergers and acquisitions only), `failures` (Failures, closures and rescues only), `branches` (Branch openings, closings and moves only), `all` (Everything on record).
- Changed on or after (`since`, date): Leave out anything that took effect before this date.
- Changed on or before (`until`, date): Leave out anything that took effect after this date.

- `change_type` (text): Which changes were included
- `changes` (list): The changes that matched, newest first
- `count` (number): How many are in this result
- `more_available` (true/false): Whether more matched than were returned
- `note` (text): What this view leaves out, if anything
- `since` (text): The earliest date that was included
- `total_matches` (number): How many matched altogether
- `until` (text): The latest date that was included
