# The Film API

> Look up photographic camera film from a workflow: the rolls you load into a 35mm or medium format camera, not motion pictures. The Film API catalogues around 130 stocks with each one's brand, ISO, whether it shoots colour or black and white, the chemistry it is developed in, the formats it is sold in, a description and a list of key features. List or search the catalogue, pull one film's full record, compare several side by side, or get a recommendation for a specific shoot from the format you are carrying, the light you will be in and the processes your lab runs. Pick one at random for a film-of-the-week post, list the brands and what each covers, or summarize the whole catalogue in numbers. Every action reads: nothing here changes anything, in this catalogue or anywhere else. No account or API key required.

## Actions

### Compare films

Compare two to six films side by side and get back what they agree on and what they do not, the formats and processes they have in common, and how many stops separate the slowest from the fastest. Name each film the same way you would to 'Get a film'. Answers 'can I shoot these two on the same trip and get them developed together?' in one step. No API key required.

**Inputs**

- Films (`films`, list, required): The films to compare, as a list or as one comma-separated line. Between 2 and 6 of them. Each is looked up the same way 'Get a film' looks one up, so a name, a brand and name, or an id all work, and a name matching several films fails rather than guessing.

**Outputs**

- `catalog_size` (number)
- `count` (number)

### Find a film for a shoot

Recommend films for a specific shoot: the camera you are taking, whether you want colour or black and white, the light you will be in, and the processes your lab actually runs. The light picks the ISO range, and results are ranked by how many stops each film sits from the speed that light wants, so the first answer is the one to load. Every recommendation comes with a line saying why it was made. No API key required.

**Inputs**

- Format (`format`, text): Which format the film has to be sold in. 35mm is the everyday cassette; 120 is the wider roll a medium format camera takes. 'Sold in both' is a different question from 'either', and answers it for a shoot that uses two cameras. One of: `any` (Either format), `35mm` (35mm, the everyday cassette), `120` (120, medium format roll film), `both` (Sold in both 35mm and 120). Default: `any`.
- Colour or black and white (`color`, text): Whether the film shoots in colour. This is a separate question from the process it is developed in: Ilford XP2 Super is a black-and-white film developed in C-41 colour chemistry, so asking for black and white here does not rule out a colour process. One of: `any` (Colour or black and white), `color` (Colour), `bw` (Black and white). Default: `any`.
- Light you will be shooting in (`lighting`, text): The light the film has to cope with, which is what decides its speed. Bright sun wants a slow film for fine grain; night wants a fast one. Leave at 'no preference' to rank on the other filters alone. One of: `any` (No preference: any speed), `bright_sun` (Bright sun: ISO 200 and under), `overcast` (Overcast or open shade: ISO 100 to 800), `indoors` (Indoors or evening: ISO 320 to 1600), `night` (Night or very low light: ISO 800 and up). Default: `any`.
- Processes your lab runs (`processes`, list): Only films your lab can actually develop. Choose several and a film qualifies if it can be developed in any one of them. Leave empty to ignore the question. One or more of: `b&w` (B&W: standard black-and-white chemistry), `c-41` (C-41: the colour negative standard), `e-6` (E-6: colour slide (transparency)), `ecn-2` (ECN-2: motion picture negative), `cr-56` (CR-56: Fujifilm's slide process), `c6r` (C6R: another slide process).
- Brand (`brand`, text): Only films from this brand. Matched loosely and without regard to case, so 'kodak', 'Kodak' and 'koda' all reach Kodak. Leave empty for every brand. Run 'List film brands' to see what the catalogue holds.
- How many to suggest (`limit`, number): How many films to suggest, best fit first. Five by default. From 1 to 25. Default: `5`.

### Get a film

Get one film's full record: its ISO, whether it is colour or black and white, whether it is a negative or a slide film, the chemistry it is developed in, the formats it is sold in, its key features and its description. Name it however you have it - 'Portra 400', 'Kodak Professional Portra 400', or the id from an earlier step. A name that matches several films says which ones rather than picking one. No API key required.

**Inputs**

- Film (`film`, text, required): The film to look up: its name, its brand and name together, or the catalogue id another step returned. Matched without regard to case, spacing or punctuation, so a name read off a message works. If it matches more than one film the step says which, so add the brand or use the id.

**Outputs**

### List film brands

List every brand in the catalogue with what each one covers: how many films it has, how they split between colour and black and white, the ISO range they span, the formats they come in and the processes they need. Ask for the film names too when you want the whole roster in one step. The list to read before filtering anything else by brand. No API key required.

**Inputs**

- Sort by (`sort_by`, text): What order the brands come back in. Most films first by default, which puts the brands worth filtering on at the top. One of: `film_count` (Most films first), `name` (Brand name). Default: `film_count`.
- Include each brand's film names (`include_films`, true/false): Add the name of every film under each brand. Off by default, because with it on the result is the whole catalogue's worth of names. Default: `false`.

**Outputs**

- `brands` (list)
- `catalog_size` (number)
- `count` (number)
- `url` (text)

### List films

List photographic films from The Film API's catalogue, filtered by brand, format, colour, developing process and ISO. This is the catalogue of rolls you load into a camera, not a catalogue of movies. Every filter is optional, so with none set this is the whole catalogue, sorted. The service returns its films in no particular order, so the sort here is what makes two runs agree. No API key required.

**Inputs**

- Brand (`brand`, text): Only films from this brand. Matched loosely and without regard to case, so 'kodak', 'Kodak' and 'koda' all reach Kodak. Leave empty for every brand. Run 'List film brands' to see what the catalogue holds.
- Developed in (`process`, text): Only films your lab can develop in this chemistry. A film often lists more than one - Velvia 50 is 'E-6, CR-56' - and asking for any one of them finds it. Leave empty for every process. One of: `b&w` (B&W: standard black-and-white chemistry), `c-41` (C-41: the colour negative standard), `e-6` (E-6: colour slide (transparency)), `ecn-2` (ECN-2: motion picture negative), `cr-56` (CR-56: Fujifilm's slide process), `c6r` (C6R: another slide process).
- Slowest ISO to include (`min_iso`, number): Only films at this speed or faster. Leave empty for no lower bound. The catalogue runs from ISO 1.6 to ISO 3200, and a speed can be fractional, so this is a number rather than a whole number. At least 0.
- Fastest ISO to include (`max_iso`, number): Only films at this speed or slower. Leave empty for no upper bound. Setting this below the slowest ISO fails the step rather than quietly returning nothing. At least 0.
- Sort by (`sort_by`, text): What order the films come back in. Brand then name by default, which is how a catalogue reads; sort by ISO when the speed is the point. One of: `brand` (Brand, then film name), `name` (Film name), `iso` (ISO, slowest first), `iso_desc` (ISO, fastest first), `newest` (Most recently added to the catalogue). Default: `brand`.
- How many to return (`limit`, number): How many films to return. The catalogue holds around 130, so 200 returns all of it; the default of 25 keeps a step's result readable. From 1 to 200. Default: `25`.

**Outputs**

- `catalog_size` (number)
- `count` (number)
- `films` (list)
- `match_count` (number)
- `query` (object)
- `truncated` (true/false)

### Pick a film at random

Pick a film at random from the catalogue, or from the part of it your filters leave. Useful for a 'film of the week' post, for choosing what to load when you cannot decide, or for pulling a sample to write about. Give it a seed and the same seed picks the same films every time, so a scheduled workflow can be reproduced.

At least 0.
- How many to pick (`count`, number): How many different films to pick. Never the same film twice in one step, and never more than the filters leave to pick from. From 1 to 10. Default: `1`.
- Seed (`seed`, text): Anything you like. The same seed picks the same films from the same catalogue, which makes a step repeatable; leave it empty for a fresh pick every run. Feeding it today's date gives a different film each day that is the same all day.

### Search films

Search the film catalogue by free text and get the closest matches first. Looks in the film's name, its brand, its key features and its description, so 'infrared', 'push processing' and 'portra' all find something. A hit in the name outranks one buried in a paragraph of prose, and every result says which fields it matched. Use this when you know roughly what you want but not exactly how the catalogue spells it. No API key required.

**Inputs**

- Search for (`query`, text, required): The text to look for. At least two characters. Matched without regard to case, anywhere in the fields you choose below.
- Look in (`search_in`, list): Which fields to search. All four by default. Narrow to the name and brand when you are looking for a specific film rather than a kind of film. One or more of: `name` (The film's name), `brand` (The brand), `key_features` (The key features), `description` (The description).
- How many to return (`limit`, number): How many matches to return, best first. Ten by default. From 1 to 200. Default: `10`.

**Outputs**

- `catalog_size` (number)
- `count` (number)
- `films` (list)
- `match_count` (number)
- `query` (text)
- `searched_in` (list)
- `truncated` (true/false)
- `url` (text)

### Summarize the catalogue

Get the whole film catalogue in numbers: how many films it holds, from how many brands, how they split between colour and black and white, negative and slide, 35mm and 120, how they spread across ISO bands and processes, and which films were added most recently. One step for a report, a digest, or a check on whether the catalogue has grown since last time. No API key required.

**Inputs**

- How many brands to rank (`top_brands`, number): How many brands to list, largest first. Ten by default; raise it to cover the whole catalogue. From 1 to 50. Default: `10`.

**Outputs**

- `brand_count` (number)
