# FuelEconomy.gov

> Look up official EPA fuel economy data from FuelEconomy.gov, the U.S. government's own source: any car from 1984 on with its city, highway and combined MPG, annual fuel cost, CO2 and smog ratings; the fuel prices the ratings are costed at; the mileage real drivers report; and the federal clean vehicle tax credits for new and used EVs, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell vehicles. No account or API key is required.

### Estimate fuel cost

Work out what a vehicle costs you to fuel, for your own mileage and city/highway split, at today's published fuel price or one you supply. Returns the yearly and monthly cost, the cost per mile, the fuel used and the CO2 that goes with it. EPA's own figure assumes 15,000 miles a year at 55% city.

**Inputs**

- Vehicle ID (`vehicle_id`, text, required): The EPA vehicle record id. Get one from 'List trims', 'Find a vehicle' or any action that returns vehicles.
- Miles driven a year (`annual_miles`, number): How far the vehicle is driven in a year. Defaults to EPA's 15,000. From 1.0 to 1000000.0. Default: `15000.0`.
- City driving (%) (`city_driving_percent`, number): The share of those miles driven in town. Defaults to EPA's 55%. From 0 to 100. Default: `55.0`.
- Which fuel (`fuel`, text): For a flex-fuel or plug-in vehicle, which of its two fuels to cost. Defaults to the main one. One of: `primary` (The main fuel (default)), `alternative` (The alternative fuel (E85, electricity, CNG, propane)). Default: `primary`.
- Fuel price (`fuel_price`, number): Your own price per gallon (or per kWh for an electric vehicle). Leave empty to use the current national price FuelEconomy.gov publishes. From 0.01 to 1000.0.

**Outputs**

- `annual_co2_metric_tons` (number)

### Find a vehicle

Look up a car's official EPA ratings by year, make and model: city, highway and combined MPG, annual fuel cost, CO2, the EPA scores, and the engine and transmission behind them. Pick a trim for one exact vehicle, or leave it empty to get every trim of the model with its own ratings.

**Inputs**

- Model year (`year`, text, required): The vehicle's model year. The list comes straight from EPA's catalogue, which starts at 1984.
- Make (`make`, text, required): The manufacturer, from the makes EPA rated that model year.
- Model (`model`, text, required): The model, spelled the way EPA spells it: the list holds the exact names ('Civic 4Dr', 'CR-V AWD').
- Trim (`vehicle_id`, text): The engine, transmission and drive combination. Leave empty to return every trim of this model.

**Outputs**

- `found` (true/false)
- `make` (text)
- `model` (text)
- `trim_count` (number)
- `truncated` (true/false)
- `vehicle` (object)
- `vehicle_count` (number)

**Outputs**

- `average_mpg` (number)
- `city_percent` (number)

### Get vehicle emissions

Get a vehicle's emission records: its EPA smog rating out of 10, the emission standard it was certified to, and whether it is a SmartWay vehicle. One record per sales area, because a car certified for California and for the rest of the country is rated separately in each.

**Inputs**

- Vehicle ID (`vehicle_id`, text, required): The EPA vehicle record id. Get one from 'List trims', 'Find a vehicle' or any action that returns vehicles.

**Outputs**

- `best_smog_rating` (number)
- `emission_count` (number)
- `emissions` (list)
- `is_smartway` (true/false)
- `vehicle_id` (number)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "best_smog_rating": 7,
  "emission_count": 1,
  "emissions": [
    {
      "emission_standard": "Federal Tier 3 Bin 30",
```

### List makes

List the manufacturers EPA rated for one model year: the first step of the year → make → model → trim walk that leads to a vehicle id.

**Inputs**

- Model year (`year`, text, required): The vehicle's model year. The list comes straight from EPA's catalogue, which starts at 1984.

**Outputs**

- `make_count` (number)

### List models

List the models a make had in one model year, spelled the way EPA spells them ('Civic 4Dr', 'CR-V AWD'), which is the spelling the other actions need.

**Inputs**

### List used vehicle tax credits

List the vehicles eligible for the federal pre-owned clean vehicle credit, by make, model, model year and technology. The credit is worth 30% of the sale price up to $4,000, so the list names the qualifying models rather than an amount.

**Inputs**

- Make (`make`, text): Only list vehicles whose make contains this text. Leave empty for every make.
- Model (`model`, text): Only list vehicles whose model contains this text. Leave empty for every model.
- Model year (`year`, number): Only list vehicles of this model year. Leave empty for all. From 1984 to 2100.
