## Actions

### Compare countries

Take one subject and see where in the world it is being written about: two to five countries over the same window, ranked, each with its share of the combined coverage and its newest headline. Use it to tell a local story from an international one, or to find the market a launch actually landed in.

**Inputs**

- Search for (`query`, text, required): Keywords to search for. Put a phrase in double quotes for an exact match ("interest rate cut"), and combine terms with AND, OR and NOT. OR binds tighter than AND, so use brackets when you mix them. At most 200 characters.
- Countries (`countries`, list, required): The countries to compare: between 2 and 5. Each one is searched separately and costs one request. One or more of: `ar` (Argentina), `au` (Australia), `bd` (Bangladesh), `br` (Brazil), `ca` (Canada), `cn` (China), `co` (Colombia), `eg` (Egypt), `fr` (France), `de` (Germany), and 27 more.
- How far back (`window`, text): How recent an article has to be, counted back from the moment the step runs, so a workflow on a schedule keeps looking at fresh news instead of a fixed date. Note that the free plan publishes articles 12 hours after they appear, so a window shorter than that comes back empty on it. One of: `1h` (Last hour), `6h` (Last 6 hours), `12h` (Last 12 hours), `24h` (Last 24 hours), `2d` (Last 2 days), `3d` (Last 3 days), `7d` (Last 7 days), `14d` (Last 14 days), `30d` (Last 30 days). Default: `24h`.
- Language (`language`, text): Optional. Only include articles written in this language. One of: `ar` (Arabic), `bn` (Bengali), `zh` (Chinese), `nl` (Dutch), `en` (English), `fr` (French), `de` (German), `el` (Greek), `he` (Hebrew), `hi` (Hindi), and 16 more.

**Outputs**

- `countries` (list): The countries, most coverage first
- `country_count` (number): How many countries were compared
- `from_date` (text): The start of the window, in UTC, as sent to GNews
- `language` (text): The language filter that was applied
- `leading_country` (text): The country covering it most
- `leading_country_label` (text): That country's name
- `query` (text): The subject that ran
- `requests_used` (number): How many GNews requests this step spent: one per country
- `to_date` (text): The end of the window, in UTC, as sent to GNews
- `total_articles` (number): The combined article count across the countries
- `window` (text): The window that was asked for
- `window_label` (text): That window in words

### Compare topics

Compare how much is being written about several subjects (two to five of them) over the same window, ranked, each with its share of the combined coverage and its newest headline. Use it for share of voice against competitors, or to see which of your product lines the press is picking up.

**Inputs**

- Topics (`topics`, list, required): The subjects to compare: between 2 and 5. Each one is searched separately and costs one request.
- How far back (`window`, text): How recent an article has to be, counted back from the moment the step runs, so a workflow on a schedule keeps looking at fresh news instead of a fixed date. - Published in (`country`, text): Optional. Only include articles published in this country. It is where the publisher is, not what the article is about. One of: `ar` (Argentina), `au` (Australia), `bd` (Bangladesh), `br` (Brazil), `ca` (Canada), `cn` (China), `co` (Colombia), `eg` (Egypt), `fr` (France), `de` (Germany), and 27 more.

### Count articles

Count how many articles mention a subject in the window you choose, and return the newest one. It costs a single request whether the answer is three articles or thirty thousand, so it is the cheap check to branch a workflow on: alert someone when coverage of your brand spikes, or skip the rest of the run when there is nothing new.

**Inputs**

- Search for (`query`, text, required): Keywords to search for. Put a phrase in double quotes for an exact match ("interest rate cut"), and combine terms with AND, OR and NOT. OR binds tighter than AND, so use brackets when you mix them. At most 200 characters.

**Outputs**

### Get top headlines

Get the trending headlines, ranked the way Google News ranks them, in any of nine sections: general, world, nation, business, technology, entertainment, sports, science or health. Narrow them to a country, a language or a keyword. This is the front page; use Search articles to go looking for something in particular.

**Inputs**

- Section (`category`, text): Which section of the news to take headlines from. General is the overall front page. One of: `general`, `world`, `nation`, `business`, `technology`, `entertainment`, `sports`, `science`, `health`. Default: `general`.
- Language (`language`, text): Optional. Only include headlines written in this language. One of: `ar` (Arabic), `bn` (Bengali), `bg` (Bulgarian), `ca` (Catalan), `zh` (Chinese), `cs` (Czech), `nl` (Dutch), `en` (English), `et` (Estonian), `fi` (Finnish), and 31 more.
- Country (`country`, text): Optional. Only include headlines for this country. Pair it with the Nation section for that country's own domestic front page. One of: `ar` (Argentina), `au` (Australia), `at` (Austria), `bd` (Bangladesh), `be` (Belgium), `bw` (Botswana), `br` (Brazil), `bg` (Bulgaria), `ca` (Canada), `cl` (Chile), and 61 more.
- Keyword (`query`, text): Optional. Only keep headlines that match these keywords. Leave it empty for the whole category. The same search grammar applies.
- Published after (`from_date`, date and time): Optional. Only include articles published at or after this moment. Times are converted to UTC for you. The free plan reaches back 30 days; paid plans reach back to 2020.
- Published before (`to_date`, date and time): Optional. Only include articles published at or before this moment. Times are converted to UTC for you.
- How many articles (`max_articles`, number): How many articles to return, from 1 to 100. Your plan sets the real ceiling: 10 on the free plan, 25, 50 or 100 on the paid ones. From 1 to 100. Default: `10`.
- Page (`page`, number): Which page of results to return. Page 1 is the first. Use it with 'How many articles' to walk through a large set of matches; GNews pages through at most 1000 articles. At least 1. Default: `1`.
- Also include (`include_incomplete`, list): Optional. GNews leaves out an article that has no summary, no article text or no picture. Tick the ones you would still like to see. That is useful when you are counting coverage rather than reading it. One or more of: `description` (Articles with no summary), `content` (Articles with no article text), `image` (Articles with no picture).
- Shorten the article text (`shorten_content`, true/false): Cut each article's text down to a short extract. Worth turning on when you are feeding many articles to an AI step or an email and the full text would be too much. The free plan shortens it either way. Default: `false`.

**Outputs**

- `article_count` (number): How many articles this page actually returned
- `articles` (list): The articles on this page
- `category` (text): The section that was asked for
- `category_label` (text): That section's name
- `country` (text): The country filter that was applied
- `country_label` (text): That country's name
- `from_date` (text): The earliest publication time asked for, in UTC
- `has_more` (true/false): True when another page of matches can be fetched
- `language` (text): The language filter that was applied
- `max_articles` (number): How many were asked for per page
- `page` (number): The page that was returned
- `query` (text): The keyword filter that was applied
- `to_date` (text): The latest publication time asked for, in UTC
- `total_articles` (number): How many articles match in total, across all pages

### Get top sources for a topic

Find out who is covering a subject, not just what has been written: the publishers writing about it most in the window you choose, ranked, each with its share of the coverage and its most recent article. Use it to build a press list, to see where a story is landing, or to pick the publishers to read it through.

**Inputs**

- Search for (`query`, text, required): Keywords to search for. Put a phrase in double quotes for an exact match ("interest rate cut"), and combine terms with AND, OR and NOT. OR binds tighter than AND, so use brackets when you mix them. At most 200 characters.
- How many publishers (`max_sources`, number): How many publishers to return, most active first, from 1 to 25. From 1 to 25. Default: `10`.
- Articles to rank from (`sample_size`, number): How many recent articles to build the ranking from, in one request. More articles make a steadier ranking; your plan sets the ceiling (10 on the free plan, up to 100 on the largest). From 1 to 100. Default: `10`.

**Outputs**

- `country` (text): The country filter that was applied
- `from_date` (text): The start of the window, in UTC, as sent to GNews
- `language` (text): The language filter that was applied
- `query` (text): The topic that ran

### Search articles

Search news articles from over 80,000 sources worldwide, with every filter GNews offers: keywords, which part of the article to match them in, language, the country the publisher is in, a published-between window, ordering and paging. Each article comes back flattened, with its publisher, its domain and a clean copy of its text.

**Inputs**

- Search for (`query`, text, required): Keywords to search for. Put a phrase in double quotes for an exact match ("interest rate cut"), and combine terms with AND, OR and NOT. OR binds tighter than AND, so use brackets when you mix them. At most 200 characters.
- Search in (`search_in`, list): Optional. Which parts of an article the keywords have to appear in. Leave it empty to use GNews's default of the headline and the summary; narrowing to the headline alone finds articles that are about the subject rather than ones that merely mention it. One or more of: `title` (Headline), `description` (Summary), `content` (Article text).
- Language (`language`, text): Optional. Only include articles written in this language. One of: `ar` (Arabic), `bn` (Bengali), `zh` (Chinese), `nl` (Dutch), `en` (English), `fr` (French), `de` (German), `el` (Greek), `he` (Hebrew), `hi` (Hindi), and 16 more.
- Order results by (`sort_by`, text): How to order the articles. Newest first is the default; best match ranks the closest matches to your keywords first. One of: `publishedAt` (Newest first), `relevance` (Best match first). Default: `publishedAt`.

### Search recent articles

Search articles published within a window that moves with the clock (the last 6 hours, the last day, the last week) counted back from the moment the step runs. This is the search to put on a schedule: a fixed date range would return the same articles on every run, while this one always looks at what is new.

**Inputs**

- Search for (`query`, text, required): Keywords to search for. Put a phrase in double quotes for an exact match ("interest rate cut"), and combine terms with AND, OR and NOT. OR binds tighter than AND, so use brackets when you mix them. At most 200 characters.
- Order results by (`sort_by`, text): How to order the articles. Newest first is the default; best match ranks the closest matches to your keywords first. One of: `publishedAt` (Newest first), `relevance` (Best match first). Default: `publishedAt`.
- How many articles (`max_articles`, number): How many articles to return, from 1 to 100. Your plan sets the real ceiling: 10 on the free plan, 25, 50 or 100 on the paid ones. From 1 to 100. Default: `10`.

**Outputs**

- `article_count` (number): How many articles this page actually returned
- `articles` (list): The articles on this page
- `country` (text): The country filter that was applied
- `country_label` (text): That country's name
- `from_date` (text): The start of the window, in UTC, as sent to GNews
- `has_more` (true/false): True when another page of matches can be fetched
- `language` (text): The language filter that was applied
- `max_articles` (number): How many were asked for per page
- `page` (number): The page that was returned
- `query` (text): The search that ran
- `sort_by` (text): The ordering that was applied
- `to_date` (text): The end of the window, in UTC, as sent to GNews
- `total_articles` (number): How many articles match in total, across all pages
- `window` (text): The window that was asked for
- `window_label` (text): That window in words
