### Find books by author

List the books a given author wrote. Gutendex's own search matches titles as well as author names, so this action checks each result's credited authors, editors and translators and keeps only the real matches: searching 'Dickens' returns his novels, not books with Dickens in the title.

**Inputs**

- Author name (`author`, text, required): The author to look up. Either order works ('Jane Austen' and 'Austen, Jane' both match), and a surname on its own is fine.
- Languages (`languages`, text): Only return books written in one of these languages. Leave empty for every language. One or more of: `af` (Afrikaans (af)), `ale` (Aleut (ale)), `ar` (Arabic (ar)), `arp` (Arapaho (arp)), `brx` (Bodo (brx)), `br` (Breton (br)), `bg` (Bulgarian (bg)), `rmq` (Caló (rmq)), `ca` (Catalan (ca)), `ceb` (Cebuano (ceb)), and 60 more.
- Author alive from (year) (`author_year_start`, number): Only return books with at least one author alive in or after this year. Use a negative number for BCE, for example -499 for 500 BCE.
- Author alive until (year) (`author_year_end`, number): Only return books with at least one author alive in or before this year. Use a negative number for BCE. Combine with 'Author alive from' to pick a century.
- Sort by (`sort`, text): How to order the results. Defaults to most downloaded first, which is Project Gutenberg's own popularity ranking. One of: `popular` (Most downloaded first (default)), `ascending` (Oldest Gutenberg ID first), `descending` (Newest Gutenberg ID first).
- Number of books (`max_results`, number): How many matching books to return, up to 160. Defaults to 32. From 1 to 160.

### Find books by topic

List the books filed under a topic: the phrase is matched against Project Gutenberg's bookshelves and subject headings. Alongside the books it returns the exact shelf and subject names that matched, which is the quickest way to find the precise wording to narrow a follow-up search with. A very broad topic can take Gutendex up to a minute to answer.

**Inputs**

- Topic (`topic`, text, required): The phrase to look for in bookshelves and subjects, matched case-insensitively anywhere in the name.
- Languages (`languages`, text): Only return books written in one of these languages. Leave empty for every language. ### Get a book

Fetch one book by its Project Gutenberg ID number, with its authors, summary, subjects, bookshelves, languages, download count, and a download link for every format it is published in.

### Get book download links

List every file Project Gutenberg publishes for a book (plain text, HTML, EPUB, Kindle, the cover image and any audio), each with a readable label and a direct URL. Pick a format to also get that one URL on its own, ready to hand to a download step.

**Inputs**

### Get book text

Download the full text of a book, ready to summarise, translate or search. Gutendex supplies the link and the text itself comes from Project Gutenberg. The licence header and footer are removed by default, and the text is cut off at the character limit you set.

**Inputs**

- Book ID (`book_id`, number, required): The book's Project Gutenberg ID number (the number at the end of its gutenberg.org address, for example 1342 for Pride and Prejudice). Search books returns this as each result's 'id'. At least 1.
- Maximum characters (`max_characters`, number): How much of the text to return, from 1,000 to 500,000 characters. Defaults to 50,000 (roughly 25 pages). 'truncated' tells you whether the book was longer than this. From 1000 to 500000.
- Remove Project Gutenberg licence text (`strip_boilerplate`, true/false): Strip the Project Gutenberg header and footer so only the work itself is returned. On by default. Default: `true`.

### Get books by ID

Fetch several books at once by their Project Gutenberg ID numbers, one request instead of one per book. Ids that do not exist are simply absent from the results.

**Inputs**

- Book IDs (`book_ids`, list, required): The Project Gutenberg ID numbers to fetch. Accepts a list of numbers or a comma-separated list, so the 'id' values from an earlier search can be passed straight in.
- Sort by (`sort`, text): How to order the results. Defaults to most downloaded first, which is Project Gutenberg's own popularity ranking. One of: `popular` (Most downloaded first (default)), `ascending` (Oldest Gutenberg ID first), `descending` (Newest Gutenberg ID first).

List the most-downloaded books on Project Gutenberg, highest first. With no filters the first page is the overall top 32; add a language or a topic to get the most popular books within it.

### Search books

Search Project Gutenberg's catalogue of free ebooks. Every filter is optional and they combine: search words are matched against author names and book titles, and the rest narrow by topic, language, copyright status, when the author was alive, and which file formats the book is available in. Results are 32 books per page.
