## Actions

### Advanced search

Combine any of Jisho's filters in a single search, with or without search text: JLPT level, WaniKani level, part of speech, usage, subject field, name type and common-only. Filters are additive, so picking JLPT N5 and Verb returns the N5 verbs.

**Inputs**

- Search text (`keyword`, text): Optional text to narrow the results, in English, Japanese or romaji. Leave blank to return everything matching the filters.
- Common words only (`common_only`, true/false): Only return words Jisho marks as common: the everyday vocabulary, with the rare and archaic entries left out. Default: `false`.
- JLPT levels (`jlpt_levels`, list): Limit results to these JLPT levels. Leave empty for any level. One or more of: `jlpt-n5` (N5 (beginner)), `jlpt-n4` (N4 (upper beginner)), `jlpt-n3` (N3 (intermediate)), `jlpt-n2` (N2 (upper intermediate)), `jlpt-n1` (N1 (advanced)).
- Parts of speech (`parts_of_speech`, list): Limit results to these parts of speech. Leave empty for any. One or more of: `noun`, `verb`, `adjective`, `adverb`, `particle`, `counter`, `pn` (Pronoun), `conj` (Conjunction), `exp` (Expression), `aux` (Auxiliary), and 28 more.
- Usage (`usage_tags`, list): Limit results to words carrying these usage labels. Leave empty for any. One or more of: `col` (Colloquial), `sl` (Slang), `m-sl` (Manga slang), `net-sl` (Internet slang), `vulg` (Vulgar), `derog` (Derogatory), `euph` (Euphemistic), `joc` (Jocular / humorous), `fam` (Familiar), `pol` (Polite (丁寧語)), and 20 more.
- Subject field (`field`, text): Limit results to one subject field. Leave blank for any field. One of: `agric` (Agriculture), `anat` (Anatomy), `archeol` (Archaeology), `archit` (Architecture), `art`, `astron` (Astronomy), `audvid` (Audiovisual), `aviat` (Aviation), `baseb` (Baseball), `biochem` (Biochemistry), and 86 more.
- Name types (`name_types`, list): Limit results to these kinds of proper name. Leave empty to search the dictionary rather than names. One or more of: `surname`, `given` (Given name), `male` (Male given name), `fem` (Female given name), `person` (Full name of a person), `place` (Place name), `station` (Railway station), `company` (Company name), `organization`, `product` (Product name), and 15 more.
- WaniKani level (`wanikani_level`, number): Limit results to the vocabulary taught at one WaniKani level, 1 to 60. Leave blank for any level. From 1 to 60.
- Exact match only (`exact`, true/false): Match the text exactly as typed instead of also returning entries that merely contain it, and turn off Jisho's automatic romaji-to-kana conversion. Leave off to search the way jisho.org does by default. Default: `false`.
- Page (`page`, number): Which page of results to fetch. Jisho returns up to 20 matches per page: page 1 is the first 20, page 2 the next 20, and so on. Defaults to 1. From 1 to 1000. Default: `1`.
- Number of results (`limit`, number): How many results to return from the page, from 1 to 20. Dictionary entries are detailed, so keep this small when you only need the best matches. Defaults to 20. From 1 to 20. Default: `20`.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number)

- `page` (number)
- `query` (text)
- `words` (list)

### Search by JLPT level

List the vocabulary at one JLPT level (N5 through N1): a study list for that level, or, with search text added, the entries at that level matching a word.

**Inputs**

- JLPT level (`jlpt_level`, text, required): Which Japanese-Language Proficiency Test level. One of: `jlpt-n5` (N5 (beginner)), `jlpt-n4` (N4 (upper beginner)), `jlpt-n3` (N3 (intermediate)), `jlpt-n2` (N2 (upper intermediate)), `jlpt-n1` (N1 (advanced)).

### Search by part of speech

Search for words of one or more parts of speech (verbs, い-adjectives, counters, particles and the rest), optionally narrowed by search text. Pick several to match words that are all of them at once, such as a transitive godan verb.

**Inputs**

- Parts of speech (`parts_of_speech`, list, required): Which parts of speech to match. Choosing more than one narrows the results to words that are all of them. One or more of: `noun`, `verb`, `adjective`, `adverb`, `particle`, `counter`, `pn` (Pronoun), `conj` (Conjunction), `exp` (Expression), `aux` (Auxiliary), and 28 more.

**Outputs**

### Search by pattern

Search with wildcards: * matches any run of characters and ? matches exactly one. Use it to find every word ending in する, every four-character compound starting with 日, and so on.

**Inputs**

- Pattern (`pattern`, text, required): The pattern to match. * stands for any run of characters and ? for exactly one, so 食* finds words starting with 食 and ??する finds two characters followed by する.

Search the vocabulary of one subject field: medicine, computing, law, food, sumo and around ninety more. A glossary workflow gets the terms of art rather than the everyday senses.

**Inputs**

- Subject field (`field`, text, required): Which field of study or activity to search. One of: `agric` (Agriculture), `anat` (Anatomy), `archeol` (Archaeology), `archit` (Architecture), `art`, `astron` (Astronomy), `audvid` (Audiovisual), `aviat` (Aviation), `baseb` (Baseball), `biochem` (Biochemistry), and 86 more.
- Search text (`keyword`, text): Optional text to narrow the results, in English, Japanese or romaji. Leave blank to return everything matching the filters.

- `has_more` (true/false)
- `page` (number)
- `query` (text)
- `words` (list)

### Search by usage or register

Search by how a word is used rather than what it means: slang, honorific, humble, colloquial, archaic, onomatopoeic, four-character idioms and more.

**Inputs**

- Usage (`usage_tags`, list, required): Which usage labels to match. Choosing more than one narrows the results to words carrying all of them. One or more of: `col` (Colloquial), `sl` (Slang), `m-sl` (Manga slang), `net-sl` (Internet slang), `vulg` (Vulgar), `derog` (Derogatory), `euph` (Euphemistic), `joc` (Jocular / humorous), `fam` (Familiar), `pol` (Polite (丁寧語)), and 20 more.
- Search text (`keyword`, text): Optional text to narrow the results, in English, Japanese or romaji. Leave blank to return everything matching the filters.
- Page (`page`, number): Which page of results to fetch. Jisho returns up to 20 matches per page: page 1 is the first 20, page 2 the next 20, and so on. Defaults to 1. From 1 to 1000. Default: `1`.

### Search Japanese names

Look up Japanese proper names (surnames, given names, places, railway stations, companies and more) and get each one's reading, so you can tell how a name is actually pronounced.

**Inputs**

- Name (`keyword`, text): The name to look up, in Japanese or romaji. Leave blank to browse a name type instead.
- Name types (`name_types`, list): Optionally limit the results to certain kinds of name. This is an exact filter and Jisho's name tagging is uneven, so start with the name on its own and add a type only if you need to narrow it. One or more of: `surname`, `given` (Given name), `male` (Male given name), `fem` (Female given name), `person` (Full name of a person), `place` (Place name), `station` (Railway station), `company` (Company name), `organization`, `product` (Product name), and 15 more.

### Search the dictionary

Search Jisho for a word in English, Japanese (kanji, hiragana or katakana) or romaji, and get every matching dictionary entry with its readings, meanings, parts of speech, JLPT level and WaniKani level.

**Inputs**

- Search text (`keyword`, text, required): What to look up. English (water), Japanese (水), or romaji (mizu) all work.
- Exact match only (`exact`, true/false): Match the text exactly as typed instead of also returning entries that merely contain it, and turn off Jisho's automatic romaji-to-kana conversion. Leave off to search the way jisho.org does by default. Default: `false`.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number)
- `has_more` (true/false)
- `page` (number)
- `query` (text)
- `words` (list)

### Translate English to Japanese

Find the Japanese words that mean a given English word or phrase, each with its kanji, its reading in kana and its full set of meanings so you can pick the right one.

**Inputs**

- English word or phrase (`english_text`, text, required): The English word or phrase to look up.
- Common words only (`common_only`, true/false): Only return words Jisho marks as common: the everyday vocabulary, with the rare and archaic entries left out. Default: `false`.
Defaults to 5, which is usually enough to see the right translation. From 1 to 20. Default: `5`.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number)
- `has_more` (true/false)
- `page` (number)
- `query` (text)
- `words` (list)

**Example output**

### Translate Japanese to English

Look up a Japanese word or phrase and get its reading in kana and its English meanings. Use it to gloss Japanese text coming from an earlier step.

**Inputs**

- Japanese word (`japanese_text`, text, required): The Japanese word to translate, in kanji, hiragana or katakana.
Defaults to 5, which is usually enough to see the right translation. From 1 to 20. Default: `5`.
