## Actions

### Browse a department

Page through everything one department holds, without a search term. Returns the artworks along with how many the department has in total and the offset for the next page.

**Inputs**

- Department (`department`, text, required): Which department to browse. The list is fetched from The Met, so it is always the departments the museum currently has.
- Number of artworks (`max_results`, number): How many artworks to return, from 1 to 50. Defaults to 10. The Met answers a search with matching ID numbers only, so each artwork returned is a further request. Ask for what you will use. From 1 to 50.
- Skip (`offset`, number): How many matches to skip before returning any, for paging through a long result. Feed the 'next_offset' value from a previous run back in here to get the following page. Defaults to 0. At least 0.

**Outputs**

- `artworks` (list)
- `department` (text)
- `department_id` (number)
- `has_more` (true/false)
- `next_offset` (number)
- `object_ids` (list)
- `offset` (number)
- `result_count` (number)
- `total_count` (number)

### Find artworks by artist

List the works one artist made. The Met's own search matches titles and descriptions as well as artist names, so this action checks who is actually credited on each result and keeps only the real matches: searching 'Rembrandt' returns his etchings, not every print that mentions him. Works with a surname on its own as well as a full name.

**Inputs**

- Artist name (`artist`, text, required): The artist to look up. A full name or a surname on its own both work.
- Department (`department`, text): Only look inside this curatorial department. The list is fetched from The Met, so it is always the departments the museum currently has. Leave empty to search the whole collection.
- Only artworks with a picture (`only_with_images`, true/false): Only return objects The Met has photographed. Note that the API publishes the picture itself only for works released under Open Access, so check an artwork's 'image_count' before using its image URL. Off by default. Default: `false`.
- Number of artworks (`max_results`, number): How many artworks to return, from 1 to 50. Defaults to 10. The Met answers a search with matching ID numbers only, so each artwork returned is a further request. Ask for what you will use. From 1 to 50.

**Outputs**

- `artist` (text)
- `artworks` (list)
- `matched_names` (list)
- `matched_via` (text)
- `result_count` (number)
- `searched_count` (number)

### Find artworks on view

List works hanging in the galleries right now, each with the gallery number to find it in, plus the set of galleries the results are spread across. This is the visit-planning counterpart to Search artworks, which also covers the works in storage.

**Inputs**

- Narrow to (`topic`, text): Optional words to narrow to, matched anywhere in an object's record. Leave empty for everything.
- Department (`department`, text): Only look inside this curatorial department. The list is fetched from The Met, so it is always the departments the museum currently has. Leave empty to search the whole collection.

- `galleries` (list)
- `has_more` (true/false)
- `next_offset` (number)
- `object_ids` (list)

### Get an artwork

Fetch one object's full record by its Met ID number: title, artist and their dates, department, culture and period, when it was made, medium and dimensions, credit line, subject tags, whether it is on view and in which gallery, and links to its images and its page on metmuseum.org.

**Inputs**

- Object ID (`object_id`, number, required): The Met's ID number for the object: the number at the end of its metmuseum.org address, for example 45734. Every action that returns artworks reports this as 'object_id'. At least 1.

### Get artwork images

List every picture The Met publishes for an object (the main photograph and any additional views), each as a direct URL, with the credit line and any reuse terms. Pick a size to get that one URL on its own, ready to hand to a download step. Pictures are published only for works released under Open Access; for anything else the list comes back empty and 'is_public_domain' says why.

**Inputs**

- Object ID (`object_id`, number, required): The Met's ID number for the object: the number at the end of its metmuseum.org address, for example 45734. Every action that returns artworks reports this as 'object_id'. At least 1.
- Size to select (`image_size`, text): Which size to return as 'selected_image_url'. Defaults to full resolution. The full list of images is returned either way. One of: `original` (Full resolution), `web_large` (Web size (smaller, faster)).

**Outputs**

- `additional_image_urls` (list)
- `artist_name` (text)
- `credit_line` (text)
- `image_count` (number)
- `image_size` (text)
- `images` (list)
- `is_public_domain` (true/false)
- `object_id` (number)
- `object_url` (text)
- `primary_image_small_url` (text)
- `primary_image_url` (text)
- `rights_and_reproduction` (text)
- `selected_image_url` (text)
- `title` (text)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "additional_image_urls": [
    "https://images.metmuseum.org/CRDImages/as/original/DP251138.jpg"
  ],
  "artist_name": "Kiyohara Yukinobu",
### Get artworks by ID
Fetch several objects at once by their Met ID numbers, in one step instead of one per artwork. IDs the museum does not have are reported back under 'missing_object_ids' rather than failing the step.
**Inputs**
- Object IDs (`object_ids`, list, required): The Met ID numbers to fetch, up to 50. Accepts a list of numbers or a comma-separated list, so the 'object_ids' from an earlier search can be passed straight in.
**Outputs**
- `artworks` (list)
- `missing_object_ids` (list)
- `requested_count` (number)
- `result_count` (number)
**Example output**
```json

### List collection highlights

List the works The Met itself flags as highlights: the selected pieces representing different cultures and periods across the permanent collection. With nothing filled in this is the museum-wide list; add a department or a few words to narrow it.

- `has_more` (true/false)
- `next_offset` (number)
- `object_ids` (list)
- `offset` (number)
- `result_count` (number)
- `topic` (text)

### List departments

List The Met's curatorial departments with their ID numbers: Egyptian Art, European Paintings, Arms and Armor and the rest. Every action that takes a department offers these as a dropdown, so this is mainly for a workflow that needs to loop over them.

**Inputs**: None.

**Outputs**

- `department_count` (number)
- `departments` (list)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "department_count": 3,
  "departments": [
    {
      "department_id": 1,
      "name": "American Decorative Arts"
    },
    {
      "department_id": 6,
      "name": "Asian Art"
    },
    {
      "department_id": 11,
      "name": "European Paintings"
    }
  ]
}
```

### List recently updated artworks

List the objects whose catalogue record The Met has revised on or after a date: new photography, a re-attributed artist, a corrected date. This is how a workflow keeps a copy of the collection in step with the museum's own edits without re-reading all 500,000 records.

**Inputs**

- Updated on or after (`updated_since`, date, required): Only return objects whose record changed on or after this date.
- Departments (`departments`, list): Only look inside these departments. Leave empty for the whole collection.
- Number of artworks (`max_results`, number): How many artworks to return, from 1 to 50. Defaults to 10. The Met answers a search with matching ID numbers only, so each artwork returned is a further request. Ask for what you will use. From 1 to 50.

**Outputs**

### Search artworks

Search The Met's collection of more than 500,000 objects. Every filter is optional and they combine: narrow by department, medium or object type, where the work comes from, and when it was made, and keep only the museum's highlights, the works on view, or the ones it has photographed. Returns the artworks themselves, not just ID numbers, with the total number of matches and the offset for the next page.

**Inputs**

- Search words (`query`, text, required): What to look for. By default this is matched against the whole record: title, artist, culture, medium, tags and more.
- Match against (`search_field`, text): Which part of the record the search words have to match. Defaults to anywhere in the record. The narrower choices need the wording to line up with The Met's own: 'Title only' finds 'Washington Crossing the Delaware' but not 'sunflowers'. One of: `everything` (Anywhere in the record (default)), `title` (Title only), `tags` (Subject keyword tags only), `artist_or_culture` (Artist name or culture only).
- Department (`department`, text): Only look inside this curatorial department. The list is fetched from The Met, so it is always the departments the museum currently has. Leave empty to search the whole collection.
- Medium or object type (`medium`, list): Only return objects of these kinds. Choosing several returns objects matching any of them; up to 6 at a time. Leave empty for every medium. One or more of: `Paintings`, `Drawings`, `Prints`, `Lithographs`, `Watercolors`, `Photographs`, `Negatives`, `Posters`, `Sculpture`, `Masks`, and 45 more.
- Place (`geo_location`, text): Only return objects tied to this place: a continent, a country, a region or a city, matched against The Met's own geography fields. Spelling and capitalisation must match The Met's ('France', not 'french').
- Made from (year) (`year_from`, number): Only return objects made in or after this year. Use a negative number for B.C., for example -100 for 100 B.C. The Met needs both years or neither, so fill in 'Made until' as well. These are plain years rather than dates because the collection reaches back millennia.
- Made until (year) (`year_to`, number): Only return objects made in or before this year. Use a negative number for B.C. Must be filled in alongside 'Made from'.
- Only the museum's highlights (`only_highlights`, true/false): Only return works The Met has singled out as highlights of the collection. Off by default. Default: `false`.
- Only works on view (`only_on_view`, true/false): Only return works currently hanging in the galleries. Off by default. Default: `false`.
- Skip (`offset`, number): How many matches to skip before returning any, for paging through a long result. Feed the 'next_offset' value from a previous run back in here to get the following page. Defaults to 0. At least 0.

**Outputs**

- `artworks` (list)
- `has_more` (true/false)
- `next_offset` (number)

- `offset` (number)
- `query` (text)
