# moogleAPI

> Look up Final Fantasy's characters, monsters and games through moogleAPI, a free, open fan project: eighteen games from the first Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy XVI with X-2 and XIII-2, over 2,000 characters with their role, affiliation, race, hometown, abilities, art and popularity, and over 3,800 monsters with where they are fought, their HP, level and battle stats, weaknesses, abilities, drops and steals, bosses marked. List a game's cast or bestiary, get a character or monster by ID or by name, search names and descriptions, pick a character at random for a character of the day, and read each game's release, platform and logo. No API key needed; one lifts the rate limit tenfold.

## Actions

### Get a random character

Pick a Final Fantasy character at random, from every game or from one, optionally only among the popular ones or those with a picture, for a character of the day, a quiz or a prompt. The same seed always picks the same character, so a seed of the date gives one pick a day. Returns everything Get character does. Fails if no character matches the filters.

**Inputs**

- Game (`game`, text): Optional. Only one game, by its number, name or ID, typed any way: VII, FF7, Final Fantasy VII or 7 all work, as do X-2 and XIII-2. A game from List games can be given whole. Leave empty for every game.
- Seed (`seed`, text): Optional. Any text; the same seed always picks the same character, so today's date gives a character of the day that every run that day agrees on. Leave empty for a fresh pick each time.
- Minimum popularity (`min_popularity`, number): Optional. Only records with a popularity score of at least this, from 0 to 100; the leads of a game score in the nineties and a shopkeeper in the sixties. Leave empty or 0 for everyone. From 0 to 100. Default: `0`.
- Require a picture (`require_image`, true/false): Only records that have a piece of art, for a post or a card that shows one. Off by default: most records have one, and the rest give null for their picture. Default: `false`.

**Outputs**

- `character` (object): The character, with everything the service holds.
- `seed` (text): The seed the pick was made with, or null for a fresh pick.

**Example output**

```json
{
  "character": {
    "abilities": null,
    "affiliation": null,
    "description": "Joshua Rosfield is a main character from Final Fantasy XVI. He is the Archduke of Rosaria's second born son and Clive's younger brother.",
```

### Get character

Get one Final Fantasy character by ID or by name, typed any way, with everything moogleAPI holds: a description, their role, affiliation, race, hometown and abilities, their art, their game and their popularity. A name is found through the service's search, within a game when one is given; a name several characters share fails naming them, and a name nobody has fails too.

**Inputs**

- Character (`character`, text, required): The character: their ID, such as 251, or their name, such as Cloud Strife, typed any way. Part of a name works when only one character has it; a name several share, such as Cloud of Darkness, needs the game or the ID. A character from List or Search characters can be given whole.
- Game (`game`, text): Optional. The game to look a name up in, by its number, name or ID, such as VII or Final Fantasy X-2, for a name several games share. Ignored when an ID is given.

**Outputs**

- `character` (object): The character, with everything the service holds.

**Example output**

```json
{
  "character": {
    "abilities": "Operator Mode/Punisher Mode, Omnislash, Cross-Slash, Ascension",
    "affiliation": "Shinra Electric Power Company",
    "description": "Cloud Strife is a major protagonist in the Final Fantasy VII series. He is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.",
    "game": "Final Fantasy VII",
    "hometown": "Nibelheim",
    "id": 251,
    "image": "https://images.moogleapi.com/gen/characters/251.webp",
    "name": "Cloud Strife",
    "popularity": 100,
    "race": "Human",
    "release_year": 1997,
    "role": "Mercenary (Former Shinra Infantryman), Courier"
  }
}
```

### Get game

Get one Final Fantasy game by its number, name or ID, typed any way (VII, FF7, Final Fantasy VII, X-2): its release year, platform, logo and emblem, and how many characters and monsters the service holds for it. A game it does not cover fails, naming the ones it does.

**Inputs**

- Game (`game`, text, required): The game, by its number, name or ID, typed any way: VII, FF7, Final Fantasy VII or 7 all work, as do X-2 and XIII-2. A game from List games can be given whole.

**Outputs**

- `game` (object): The game, with how much the service holds for it.

**Example output**

```json
{
  "game": {
    "character_count": 74,
    "description": null,
    "emblem": "https://images.moogleapi.com/thumb/games/7.webp",
    "main_series": true,
    "monster_count": 300,
    "name": "Final Fantasy VII",
    "platform": "PlayStation",
    "release_year": 1997
  }
}
```

### Get monster

Get one Final Fantasy monster by ID or by name, typed any way, with everything moogleAPI holds: a description, whether it is a boss, where it is fought, its HP, MP, level, experience and gil, its stats, weaknesses, abilities, drops and steals, its art, its game and its popularity. A name is found through the service's search, within a game when one is given; a name several monsters share fails naming them, and a name none has fails too.

**Inputs**

- Monster (`monster`, text, required): The monster: its ID, such as 1, or its name, such as Abyss Worm, typed any way. Part of a name works when only one monster has it; a name most games share, such as Goblin, needs the game or the ID. A monster from List or Search monsters can be given whole.
- Game (`game`, text): Optional. The game to look a name up in, by its number, name or ID, such as VII or Final Fantasy X-2, for a name several games share. Ignored when an ID is given.

**Outputs**

- `monster` (object): The monster, with everything the service holds.

### Search characters

Find Final Fantasy characters with a word in their name or description, across every game or within one: the service's first 50 matches in order of name, each with their role, description, art and game. No match is an empty list, not a failure. Get character gives the rest of a match.

**Inputs**

- Query (`query`, text, required): A word or words to look for in names and descriptions, ignoring case, from 2 to 100 characters, such as Cloud or Shinra. A word in a description counts as much as one in a name.
- Game (`game`, text): Optional. Only one game, by its number, name or ID, typed any way: VII, FF7, Final Fantasy VII or 7 all work, as do X-2 and XIII-2. A game from List games can be given whole. Leave empty for every game.

**Outputs**

- `capped` (true/false): Whether the service's limit of 50 matches was reached, so there may be more, later in the alphabet: narrow the query or the game.
- `count` (number): How many matches came back, at most 50.
- `game` (text): The name of the game searched, e.g. 'Final Fantasy VII', or null when every game was.
- `query` (text): The words looked for, as sent.
- `results` (list): The matches, up to 50, in order of name. Empty when nothing matches.
