# NIH RePORTER

> Search the public record of what the NIH pays for: every grant, contract and intramural project since the 1980s, with the money, the researchers, the institutions and the papers that came out of it. Find the projects working on a topic, read one in full including its abstract, see who the best-funded researchers in a field are, total up the spending by year, institute, university or state, or start from a paper and find the grants behind it. Awards from the VA, FDA, AHRQ and parts of the CDC are covered too. No account or API key is required.

## Actions

### Find funded projects

Search every grant, contract and intramural project NIH has funded since the 1980s, by topic, fiscal year, institute, organization, researcher, state, award size and more. Each result carries the title, the money, the people, the institution and a link to the project on RePORTER. Add at least one filter.

**Inputs**

- Topic (`text`, text): Words to look for, such as a disease, a technique or a gene. Leave blank to match on the other filters alone.
- Look in (`search_in`, list): Which parts of a project the topic has to appear in. Leave them all unticked to search every part; tick only the title for the projects a topic is really about rather than every one that mentions it. One or more of: `projecttitle` (Project title), `abstracttext` (Abstract), `terms` (Project terms).
- Match (`match`, text): How the words of the topic are combined. Advanced accepts AND, OR, NOT and brackets, so "crispr AND (sickle OR thalassemia)" works. One of: `and` (All of these words), `or` (Any of these words), `advanced` (Advanced (AND, OR, NOT and brackets)). Default: `and`.
- Fiscal year from (`fiscal_year_from`, number): The earliest fiscal year to include. Set this on its own for everything since that year. From 1985 to 2035.
- Fiscal year to (`fiscal_year_to`, number): The latest fiscal year to include. Set this on its own for everything up to that year, or set both for a single year. From 1985 to 2035.
- Funded by (`institutes`, list): The NIH institutes and centers that paid for the work. Pick any number, or none for all of them. RePORTER also carries awards from the VA, FDA, AHRQ and parts of the CDC, which are in the list too. One or more of: `NCI` (NCI — National Cancer Institute), `NEI` (NEI — National Eye Institute), `NHLBI` (NHLBI — National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute), `NHGRI` (NHGRI — National Human Genome Research Institute), `NIA` (NIA — National Institute on Aging), `NIAAA` (NIAAA — National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism), `NIAID` (NIAID — National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases), `NIAMS` (NIAMS — National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases), `NIBIB` (NIBIB — National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering), `NICHD` (NICHD — National Institute of Child Health and Human Development), and 26 more.
- Organization (`organization`, text): The university, hospital or company holding the award. Part of a name is enough.
- Researcher (`researcher`, text): The name of a principal investigator. A surname on its own matches everyone who has it, so add a first name to narrow it.
- State (`states`, list): Where the organization is. US states and territories only. One or more of: `AL` (Alabama), `AK` (Alaska), `AZ` (Arizona), `AR` (Arkansas), `CA` (California), `CO` (Colorado), `CT` (Connecticut), `DE` (Delaware), `DC` (District of Columbia), `FL` (Florida), and 46 more.
- Country (`countries`, list): Where the organization is. Every country here holds at least one NIH award; almost all NIH money goes to the United States. One or more of: `ALBANIA`, `ANGOLA`, `ARGENTINA`, `ARMENIA`, `AUSTRALIA`, `AUSTRIA`, `BAHAMAS`, `BANGLADESH`, `BARBADOS`, `BELGIUM`, and 108 more.
- Kind of funding (`funding_kinds`, list): What the money is for. Research grants are the ordinary project grants such as the R01. One or more of: `Non-SBIR/STTR` (Research grants), `Research Centers`, `Other Research-Related` (Career development and other research-related), `Training, Individual` (Fellowships (individual training)), `Training, Institutional` (Training grants (institutional)), `SBIR/STTR` (Small business (SBIR/STTR)), `Intramural Research` (NIH intramural research), `R and D Contracts` (Research and development contracts), `Interagency Agreements`, `Construction Grants`, `Other`.
- Award stage (`award_stages`, list): Where an award sits in a grant's life. Pick New award for work funded for the first time. One or more of: `1` (New award), `2` (Competing renewal), `3` (Supplement or revision), `4` (Extension), `5` (Continuation (non-competing)), `6` (Change of organization status), `7` (Change of institution), `8` (Moved to another NIH institute), `9` (Renewal at another NIH institute).
- Smallest award (`min_award`, number): Only awards worth at least this many US dollars in a single fiscal year. At least 0.
- Largest award (`max_award`, number): Only awards worth at most this many US dollars in a single fiscal year. At least 0.
- Only projects running now (`active_only`, true/false): Returns one record per project that is running today (its current award year) instead of one record for every year it has ever run. Default: `false`.
- Started on or after (`started_after`, date): Only projects whose first day falls on or after this date.
- Started on or before (`started_before`, date): Only projects whose first day falls on or before this date.
- Ends on or after (`ends_after`, date): Only projects still running on this date.
- Ends on or before (`ends_before`, date): Only projects finishing by this date: the grants coming up for renewal.
- Added to RePORTER since (`added_since`, date): Only records RePORTER published on or after this date. Use it to watch for new awards: RePORTER is refreshed weekly.
- Sort by (`sort_by`, text): Best match orders by how well a project fits the topic; without a topic it is the order RePORTER returns. One of: `best_match` (Best match), `largest_award` (Largest award first), `smallest_award` (Smallest award first), `newest_start` (Most recently started), `oldest_start` (Earliest start date first), `ending_soonest` (Ending soonest), `recently_added` (Recently added to RePORTER), `newest_fiscal_year` (Newest fiscal year first). Default: `best_match`.
- How many to return (`limit`, number): Up to 500 projects in one step. The total number of matches comes back either way. From 1 to 500. Default: `25`.
- Skip the first (`offset`, number): How many matches to step over before returning any. Feed the 'next_offset' from the previous step here to walk through a long list; RePORTER serves the first 15,000 matches of a search. At least 0. Default: `0`.

**Outputs**

- `has_more` (true/false)
- `next_offset` (number): Feed this into 'Skip the first' to get the next page. Empty on the last page.
- `note` (text): Set only when something needs saying. Empty otherwise.
- `projects` (list): The matching projects, in the chosen order.
- `reporter_url` (text): The same search, open on RePORTER's own site.
- `returned_count` (number)
- `total_projects` (number): Every matching record, not just the ones returned. RePORTER holds one record per project per fiscal year.

### Find researchers

Who is behind the funding: the same search as Find funded projects, but one row per person instead of one per award, ranked by how much NIH money they hold. Use it to find the leading names in a field, spot who to collaborate with, or see which investigators an institution's funding rests on. Components of center grants are left out, so nobody's total counts the same dollars twice.

### Find the grants behind a paper

Start from a paper and find the NIH grants that paid for it, with the money, the investigators and the institutions behind them. A paper often names several. Takes a PubMed ID or a PubMed link.

**Inputs**

- PubMed ID (`pubmed_id`, text, required): The paper's PubMed ID. A PubMed link works too; the ID is read out of it.

**Outputs**

- `core_project_numbers` (list): The grants credited on the paper.
- `note` (text): Set only when something needs saying. Empty otherwise.
- `project_count` (number): How many grants are credited on the paper.
- `projects` (list): One entry per grant: its most recent fiscal year, plus what the whole grant has been worth. Best-funded first.
- `pubmed_id` (number)
- `pubmed_url` (text)

### Get project details

Everything RePORTER holds about one project: the full abstract and the plain-language relevance statement, the investigators and program officers, the review panel, the cost breakdown, and every fiscal year it has been funded for with what each year was worth. Takes a project number in either form, or an application ID.

**Inputs**

- Project (`project`, text, required): A project number for one year (5R01CA262508-03), a core project number for the whole grant (R01CA262508), or an application ID (10661595). Any of the three works.

**Outputs**

- `award_count` (number)
- `awards` (list): Every award that makes up this grant, one per fiscal year, plus any supplements, newest first.
- `first_fiscal_year` (number)
- `latest_fiscal_year` (number)
- `note` (text): Set only when something needs saying. Empty otherwise.
- `project` (object)
- `reporter_url` (text): The project's page on RePORTER.
- `total_awarded_usd` (number): Every award of this grant added up. Components of a center grant are left out, because their money is already inside the parent award.

### List a project's publications

The papers a grant has produced, as PubMed IDs and links. RePORTER credits papers to the grant as a whole, so a project number for any single year returns the lot. Feed the PubMed IDs into the PubMed integration for titles, authors and abstracts.

**Inputs**

- Project number (`project`, text, required): The grant's project number, in either form: R01CA262508 or 5R01CA262508-03.
- How many to return (`limit`, number): Up to 500 papers in one step. From 1 to 500. Default: `100`.
- Skip the first (`offset`, number): How many papers to step over before returning any. Feed the 'next_offset' from the previous step here to walk a long list. At least 0. Default: `0`.

**Outputs**

- `core_project_number` (text): The grant the papers are credited to.
- `has_more` (true/false)
- `next_offset` (number)
- `publications` (list)
- `pubmed_ids` (list): Just the IDs, ready to hand to another step.
- `returned_count` (number)
- `total_publications` (number)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "core_project_number": "R01CA262508",
  "has_more": true,
  "next_offset": 2,
### Summarize funding
How much money a search adds up to, and how it breaks down by fiscal year, institute, organization and state: the numbers RePORTER's own API cannot total for you. Answers questions like what NIH spent on long COVID last year, or which universities lead a field. Components of center grants are left out, because their money is already inside the parent award.
**Inputs**
- Topic (`text`, text): Words to look for, such as a disease, a technique or a gene. Leave blank to match on the other filters alone.
- Look in (`search_in`, list): Which parts of a project the topic has to appear in. Leave them all unticked to search every part; tick only the title for the projects a topic is really about rather than every one that mentions it. One or more of: `projecttitle` (Project title), `abstracttext` (Abstract), `terms` (Project terms).
- Match (`match`, text): How the words of the topic are combined. Advanced accepts AND, OR, NOT and brackets, so "crispr AND (sickle OR thalassemia)" works. One of: `and` (All of these words), `or` (Any of these words), `advanced` (Advanced (AND, OR, NOT and brackets)). Default: `and`.
- Fiscal year from (`fiscal_year_from`, number): The earliest fiscal year to include. Set this on its own for everything since that year. From 1985 to 2035.
- Fiscal year to (`fiscal_year_to`, number): The latest fiscal year to include. Set this on its own for everything up to that year, or set both for a single year. From 1985 to 2035.
- Funded by (`institutes`, list): The NIH institutes and centers that paid for the work. Pick any number, or none for all of them. RePORTER also carries awards from the VA, FDA, AHRQ and parts of the CDC, which are in the list too. One or more of: `NCI` (NCI — National Cancer Institute), `NEI` (NEI — National Eye Institute), `NHLBI` (NHLBI — National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute), `NHGRI` (NHGRI — National Human Genome Research Institute), `NIA` (NIA — National Institute on Aging), `NIAAA` (NIAAA — National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism), `NIAID` (NIAID — National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases), `NIAMS` (NIAMS — National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases), `NIBIB` (NIBIB — National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering), `NICHD` (NICHD — National Institute of Child Health and Human Development), and 26 more.
- Organization (`organization`, text): The university, hospital or company holding the award. Part of a name is enough.
- Researcher (`researcher`, text): The name of a principal investigator. A surname on its own matches everyone who has it, so add a first name to narrow it.
- State (`states`, list): Where the organization is. US states and territories only. One or more of: `AL` (Alabama), `AK` (Alaska), `AZ` (Arizona), `AR` (Arkansas), `CA` (California), `CO` (Colorado), `CT` (Connecticut), `DE` (Delaware), `DC` (District of Columbia), `FL` (Florida), and 46 more.
- Country (`countries`, list): Where the organization is. Every country here holds at least one NIH award; almost all NIH money goes to the United States. One or more of: `ALBANIA`, `ANGOLA`, `ARGENTINA`, `ARMENIA`, `AUSTRALIA`, `AUSTRIA`, `BAHAMAS`, `BANGLADESH`, `BARBADOS`, `BELGIUM`, and 108 more.
- Kind of funding (`funding_kinds`, list): What the money is for. Research grants are the ordinary project grants such as the R01. One or more of: `Non-SBIR/STTR` (Research grants), `Research Centers`, `Other Research-Related` (Career development and other research-related), `Training, Individual` (Fellowships (individual training)), `Training, Institutional` (Training grants (institutional)), `SBIR/STTR` (Small business (SBIR/STTR)), `Intramural Research` (NIH intramural research), `R and D Contracts` (Research and development contracts), `Interagency Agreements`, `Construction Grants`, `Other`.
- Award stage (`award_stages`, list): Where an award sits in a grant's life. Pick New award for work funded for the first time. One or more of: `1` (New award), `2` (Competing renewal), `3` (Supplement or revision), `4` (Extension), `5` (Continuation (non-competing)), `6` (Change of organization status), `7` (Change of institution), `8` (Moved to another NIH institute), `9` (Renewal at another NIH institute).
- Smallest award (`min_award`, number): Only awards worth at least this many US dollars in a single fiscal year. At least 0.
- Largest award (`max_award`, number): Only awards worth at most this many US dollars in a single fiscal year. At least 0.
- Only projects running now (`active_only`, true/false): Returns one record per project that is running today (its current award year) instead of one record for every year it has ever run. Default: `false`.
- Started on or after (`started_after`, date): Only projects whose first day falls on or after this date.
- Started on or before (`started_before`, date): Only projects whose first day falls on or before this date.
- Ends on or after (`ends_after`, date): Only projects still running on this date.
- Ends on or before (`ends_before`, date): Only projects finishing by this date: the grants coming up for renewal.
- Added to RePORTER since (`added_since`, date): Only records RePORTER published on or after this date. Use it to watch for new awards: RePORTER is refreshed weekly.
- How many in each list (`breakdown_rows`, number): How many institutes, organizations and states to list, biggest first. Every fiscal year is always listed. From 1 to 200. Default: `25`.
**Outputs**
- `average_award_usd` (number)
- `by_fiscal_year` (list): Every year in the range, oldest first.
- `by_institute` (list): Biggest spender first.
- `by_organization` (list): Best-funded institution first.
- `by_state` (list): Best-funded state first.
- `covers_all_matches` (true/false): False when more records match than were read, so the totals cover the first 5,000 of them.
- `distinct_project_count` (number): Distinct grants behind those records.
- `largest_award` (object)
- `median_award_usd` (number)
- `note` (text): Set only when something needs saying. Empty otherwise.
- `project_count` (number): Matching records, one per project per year.
- `projects_analyzed` (number): How many project records this answer is built from.
- `reporter_url` (text): The same search, open on RePORTER's own site.
- `total_awarded_usd` (number): Every matching award added up.
- `total_projects` (number): How many project records match the search in total.
