# The Muse

> Search and track hiring on The Muse: browse and filter hundreds of thousands of open roles by company, category, experience level and location, search job titles and full descriptions for words the API cannot filter on, pull everything published since a date for a job alert, read a single posting in full, count what matches a search, and look up the employers behind the roles - their industries, size, offices and profile.

## Actions

### Count companies

How many employers match a set of filters, without reading their profiles - 'how many biotech companies hire in Boston'. One request, answered with a number.

**Inputs**

- Industries (`industries`, list): Only companies in these industries. One or more of: `Accounting`, `Advertising and Agencies`, `Architecture`, `Arts & Music`, `Biotechnology`, `Blockchain`, `Client Services`, `Consulting`, `Consumer Goods & Services`, `Data Science`, and 32 more.
- Company sizes (`sizes`, list): Only companies of these sizes. The Muse publishes three bands and no headcounts behind them. One or more of: `Small Size` (Small), `Medium Size` (Medium), `Large Size` (Large).
- Location search (`location_search`, text): Type part of a place name - 'Seattle', 'London', 'remote' - to fill the Locations list below with the values The Muse accepts for it.
- Locations (`locations`, list): Only companies with an office in these places. Choose from the values The Muse accepts, narrowed by the search field above.

**Outputs**

- `filters` (object)
- `page_count` (number): How many pages of 20 that is
- `reachable_page_count` (number): How many of those pages The Muse would serve
- `total_count` (number): How many records match the filters

**Example output**

```json
{
  "filters": {
    "descending": false,
    "industries": [
      "Information Technology"
    ],
    "locations": [
      "Torrance, CA"
    ],
    "sizes": [
      "Large Size"
    ]
  },
  "page_count": 1,
  "reachable_page_count": 1,
  "total_count": 7
}
```

### Count jobs

How many open roles match a set of filters, without reading any of them. One request that answers with a number instead of twenty postings and their full descriptions, so it is cheap enough for a condition, a daily figure, or a 'senior versus entry level' comparison.

**Inputs**

- Companies (`companies`, list): Only jobs at these companies. The list is every company with a profile on The Muse; the first use fills it from The Muse and the refresh button re-reads it.
- Job categories (`categories`, list): Only jobs in these categories. One or more of: `Accounting`, `Accounting and Finance`, `Account Management`, `Account Management/Customer Success`, `Administration and Office`, `Advertising and Marketing`, `Animal Care`, `Arts`, `Business Operations`, `Cleaning and Facilities`, and 51 more.
- Experience levels (`levels`, list): Only jobs at these experience levels. One or more of: `Internship`, `Entry Level`, `Mid Level`, `Senior Level`, `management`.
- Location search (`location_search`, text): Type part of a place name - 'Seattle', 'London', 'remote' - to fill the Locations list below with the values The Muse accepts for it.
- Locations (`locations`, list): Only jobs in these places. Choose from the values The Muse accepts, narrowed by the search field above. Note that The Muse returns fully remote roles alongside whichever city is chosen - each job reports whether it is remote.

**Outputs**

- `filters` (object)
- `page_count` (number): How many pages of 20 that is
- `reachable_page_count` (number): How many of those pages The Muse would serve
- `total_count` (number): How many records match the filters

**Example output**

```json
{
  "filters": {
    "categories": [
      "Software Engineering"
    ],
    "companies": [
      "SpaceX"
    ],
    "descending": false,
    "levels": [
      "Senior Level"
    ],
    "locations": [
      "Seattle, WA"
    ]
  },
  "page_count": 25,
  "reachable_page_count": 25,
  "total_count": 498
}
```

### Find locations

Turn a place name into the exact values The Muse's location filter accepts - 'seattle' becomes 'Seattle, WA'. Worth doing before filtering on a location read from a spreadsheet, an email or an earlier step: The Muse answers a place it does not recognise by quietly returning the remote-only listings rather than an error, so an unchecked value comes back looking like a successful search with the wrong jobs in it. Reads The Muse's published list and makes no API request.

**Inputs**

- Place name (`query`, text, required): A city, state or country, or part of one. Matches ignore case and accents.
- Most matches to return (`limit`, number): Stop after this many matching place names. From 1 to 200. Default: `20`.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number): How many matched
- `exact_match` (text): The published spelling when the query already named one exactly, otherwise null
- `locations` (list): The matching values, exactly as the filter accepts them, closest first
- `query` (text): The place searched for
- `remote_location` (text): The value fully remote roles are filed under

**Example output**

```json
{
  "count": 1,
  "exact_match": null,
  "locations": [
    "Seattle, WA"
  ],
  "query": "seattle",
  "remote_location": "Flexible / Remote"
}
```

### Get company

One employer's profile by its Muse company id: name, industries, size band, offices, blurb, Twitter handle, logo, and links to the profile and its jobs page. The id comes from 'Search companies', 'List companies', or the company block on any job.

**Inputs**

- Company ID (`company_id`, number, required): The Muse's numeric id for the company. Every job reports it as 'company_id'.

**Outputs**

- `company` (object)
- `company_id` (number): The id looked up

**Example output**

```json
{
  "company": {
    "description": "",
    "id": 15000190,
### List companies
Browse the employers with a profile on The Muse, filtered by industry, size and office location. Returns 20 a page with each one's name, id, industries, size band, offices, profile and jobs links, and logo.
**Inputs**
- Industries (`industries`, list): Only companies in these industries. One or more of: `Accounting`, `Advertising and Agencies`, `Architecture`, `Arts & Music`, `Biotechnology`, `Blockchain`, `Client Services`, `Consulting`, `Consumer Goods & Services`, `Data Science`, and 32 more.
- Company sizes (`sizes`, list): Only companies of these sizes. The Muse publishes three bands and no headcounts behind them. One or more of: `Small Size` (Small), `Medium Size` (Medium), `Large Size` (Large).
- Locations (`locations`, list): Only companies with an office in these places. Choose from the values The Muse accepts, narrowed by the search field above.
- Reverse the order (`descending`, true/false): Return the page from the other end of The Muse's own ordering. The Muse sorts by its own blend of trendiness, newness and uniqueness and offers no other ordering, so this reverses that rather than sorting by anything in particular. Default: `false`.
- Page (`page`, number): Which page of 20 results to return, counting from 0. The Muse serves the first 100 pages of any result set and refuses the rest, so this stops at 99; each result reports whether another page follows. From 0 to 99. Default: `0`.
**Outputs**
- `companies` (list): Companies, each with its industries, size, offices and links
- `count` (number): How many records this page holds
- `filters` (object)
- `has_more` (true/false): Whether another reachable page follows
- `next_page` (number): The page number to ask for next, or null at the end
- `page` (number): The page returned, counting from 0
- `page_count` (number): How many pages the whole result set has
- `page_size` (number): Records per page (always 20)
- `reachable_page_count` (number): How many of those pages The Muse will actually serve (never more than 100)
- `total_count` (number): How many records match the filters in all
### List jobs published since a date
The roles published on or after a date - what a daily or weekly job alert is built on. The Muse's API has no date filter and no newest-first ordering, so this reads the filtered listing page by page and keeps the postings dated on or after the day given. It reports how far it read, so 'nothing new' and 'nothing new in the pages read' are told apart.
**Inputs**
- Published on or after (`published_since`, date, required): The earliest posting date to keep. Dates are read in UTC, which is how The Muse stamps a posting.
- Companies (`companies`, list): Only jobs at these companies. The list is every company with a profile on The Muse; the first use fills it from The Muse and the refresh button re-reads it.
- Job categories (`categories`, list): Only jobs in these categories. One or more of: `Accounting`, `Accounting and Finance`, `Account Management`, `Account Management/Customer Success`, `Administration and Office`, `Advertising and Marketing`, `Animal Care`, `Arts`, `Business Operations`, `Cleaning and Facilities`, and 51 more.
- Experience levels (`levels`, list): Only jobs at these experience levels. One or more of: `Internship`, `Entry Level`, `Mid Level`, `Senior Level`, `management`.
- Location search (`location_search`, text): Type part of a place name - 'Seattle', 'London', 'remote' - to fill the Locations list below with the values The Muse accepts for it.
- Locations (`locations`, list): Only jobs in these places. Choose from the values The Muse accepts, narrowed by the search field above. Note that The Muse returns fully remote roles alongside whichever city is chosen - each job reports whether it is remote.
- Most results to return (`max_results`, number): Stop once this many matches have been found. From 1 to 200. Default: `20`.
- Most pages to read (`max_pages`, number): How far into the listing to read before giving up. Each page is 20 results and one request against the hourly allowance, so narrow the filters before raising this. From 1 to 100. Default: `5`.
**Outputs**
- `count` (number): How many matches were found
- `filters` (object)
- `jobs` (list): The jobs published on or after the date
- `jobs_scanned` (number): How many postings were read to find them
- `pages_read` (number): How many pages of the listing were read
- `published_since` (text): The date filtered on, as YYYY-MM-DD
- `reachable_page_count` (number): How many pages The Muse would have served
- `scanned_everything` (true/false): True when the whole reachable listing was read, so the matches are all there are rather than the first that were found
- `total_count` (number): How many records match the filters in all
### Search companies
Find an employer by name, and with it the id 'Get company' takes and the exact spelling the job filters match on. The Muse's API has no name search, so this reads the company listing and matches as it goes; the roster is around a thousand profiles, so a search that finds nothing has read all of them and the answer is trustworthy.
**Inputs**
- Words to look for (`query`, text, required): Every word must appear for a company to match. Case and word order are ignored.
- Where to look (`search_in`, text): Names alone are the most precise; the wider option also reads the profile blurb and the industries. One of: `name` (Company name only), `everything` (Company name, description and industries). Default: `name`.
- Industries (`industries`, list): Only companies in these industries. One or more of: `Accounting`, `Advertising and Agencies`, `Architecture`, `Arts & Music`, `Biotechnology`, `Blockchain`, `Client Services`, `Consulting`, `Consumer Goods & Services`, `Data Science`, and 32 more.
- Company sizes (`sizes`, list): Only companies of these sizes. The Muse publishes three bands and no headcounts behind them. One or more of: `Small Size` (Small), `Medium Size` (Medium), `Large Size` (Large).
- Location search (`location_search`, text): Type part of a place name - 'Seattle', 'London', 'remote' - to fill the Locations list below with the values The Muse accepts for it.
- Locations (`locations`, list): Only companies with an office in these places. Choose from the values The Muse accepts, narrowed by the search field above.
- Most results to return (`max_results`, number): Stop once this many matches have been found. From 1 to 200. Default: `20`.
- Most pages to read (`max_pages`, number): How far into the roster to read. The default reads all of it - about fifty requests - because stopping early would report 'no such company' for one listed further down. From 1 to 100. Default: `100`.
**Outputs**
- `companies` (list): The matching companies, each with its id and profile
- `companies_scanned` (number): How many profiles were read to find them
- `count` (number): How many matches were found
- `filters` (object)
- `pages_read` (number): How many pages of the listing were read
- `query` (text): The words searched for
- `reachable_page_count` (number): How many pages The Muse would have served
- `scanned_everything` (true/false): True when the whole reachable listing was read, so the matches are all there are rather than the first that were found
- `search_in` (text): Where they were looked for
- `total_count` (number): How many records match the filters in all
### Search jobs
Find jobs whose wording contains every word given - 'staff python' or 'nurse practitioner'. The Muse's API has no keyword search of its own, so this reads the filtered listing page by page and matches as it goes: set the filters as narrowly as you can, and raise 'Most pages to read' when you want it to look further. It reports how far it read and whether it reached the end, so 'nothing found' and 'nothing in the first hundred' are told apart.
**Inputs**
- Words to look for (`query`, text, required): Every word must appear for a job to match. Case and word order are ignored.
- Where to look (`search_in`, text): Titles alone are the fastest and the most precise; the full description finds a skill named in the body of a posting. One of: `title` (Job title only), `title_and_company` (Job title and company name), `everything` (Job title, company name and full description). Default: `title`.
- Companies (`companies`, list): Only jobs at these companies. The list is every company with a profile on The Muse; the first use fills it from The Muse and the refresh button re-reads it.
- Job categories (`categories`, list): Only jobs in these categories. One or more of: `Accounting`, `Accounting and Finance`, `Account Management`, `Account Management/Customer Success`, `Administration and Office`, `Advertising and Marketing`, `Animal Care`, `Arts`, `Business Operations`, `Cleaning and Facilities`, and 51 more.
- Experience levels (`levels`, list): Only jobs at these experience levels. One or more of: `Internship`, `Entry Level`, `Mid Level`, `Senior Level`, `management`.
- Location search (`location_search`, text): Type part of a place name - 'Seattle', 'London', 'remote' - to fill the Locations list below with the values The Muse accepts for it.
- Locations (`locations`, list): Only jobs in these places. Choose from the values The Muse accepts, narrowed by the search field above. Note that The Muse returns fully remote roles alongside whichever city is chosen - each job reports whether it is remote.
- Most results to return (`max_results`, number): Stop once this many matches have been found. From 1 to 200. Default: `20`.
- Most pages to read (`max_pages`, number): How far into the listing to read before giving up. Each page is 20 results and one request against the hourly allowance, so narrow the filters before raising this. From 1 to 100. Default: `5`.
**Outputs**
- `count` (number): How many matches were found
- `filters` (object)
- `jobs` (list): The matching jobs, in the order The Muse listed them
- `jobs_scanned` (number): How many postings were read to find them
- `pages_read` (number): How many pages of the listing were read
