> Look up cocktails in TheCocktailDB, the open, crowd-sourced drinks database. ### Get a cocktail

Get one drink's complete recipe by its id: category, glass, IBA class, tags, every ingredient paired with its measure, instructions in seven languages, and photo URLs in three sizes. This is the step to run after a filter or search, which return summaries only.

**Inputs**

- Cocktail ID (`drink_id`, text, required): TheCocktailDB's id for the drink, as returned by any search or filter step, for example 11007.

**Outputs**

- `alcoholic` (text): Alcoholic classification: Alcoholic, Non alcoholic or Optional alcohol.
- `alternate_name` (text): Another name the drink goes by. Null for most drinks.
- `category` (text): The category it is filed under, e.g. Ordinary Drink.
- `creative_commons_confirmed` (text): Whether the photo's Creative Commons licence is confirmed: Yes or No.
- `date_modified` (text): When the record last changed, YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS.
- `glass` (text): The glass it is served in, e.g. Cocktail glass.
- `iba_category` (text): Its class on the IBA's official cocktail list, e.g. Contemporary Classics. Null for drinks the IBA does not list.
- `id` (text): TheCocktailDB's id for the drink, e.g. 11007. Get a cocktail takes it.
- `image_attribution` (text): Who to credit for the photo. Null when unrecorded.
- `image_source` (text): Where the photo came from. Null when unrecorded.
- `ingredients` (list): The recipe, in the order it is poured. A measure can be empty while the ingredient is real (the salt on a Margarita's rim has no measure).
- `instructions` (text): How to make it, in English.
- `instructions_by_language` (object): The same instructions in every language TheCocktailDB has them in, keyed en, es, de, fr, it, zh_hans, zh_hant. Only the languages this drink carries are present.
- `name` (text): Drink name, e.g. Margarita.
- `tags` (list): Tags such as IBA or ContemporaryClassic.
- `thumbnail` (text): Full-size drink photo. Null when there is no photo.
- `thumbnail_large` (text): 500x500 photo.
- `thumbnail_medium` (text): 350x350 photo.

### Get a random cocktail

Get one randomly chosen drink in full: a ready-made 'cocktail of the day' pick, complete with ingredients, measures and instructions.

**Inputs**: None.

**Outputs**

### Get a random selection of cocktails

Get a handful of randomly chosen drinks in full, for a weekly 'try these' round-up. A Premium API key returns ten; the free test key returns one.

### Get an ingredient

Get one ingredient by its id: what it is, its type, whether it is alcoholic, its ABV and its artwork in four sizes.

**Inputs**

- Ingredient ID (`ingredient_id`, text, required): TheCocktailDB's id for the ingredient, as returned by Search ingredients, for example 552.

**Outputs**

- `abv` (number): Alcohol by volume, as a percentage. Null when unrecorded or not alcoholic.
- `description` (text): What it is, in a paragraph or two. Null for many ingredients.
- `id` (text): TheCocktailDB's id for the ingredient, e.g. 552. Get an ingredient takes it.
- `is_alcoholic` (true/false): Whether it contains alcohol. Null when unrecorded.
- `name` (text): Ingredient name, e.g. Vodka.
- `thumbnail` (text): 700x700 ingredient photo.
- `thumbnail_large` (text): 700x700 photo.
- `thumbnail_medium` (text): 350x350 photo.
- `thumbnail_small` (text): 100x100 photo.
- `type` (text): What kind of ingredient it is, e.g. Vodka or Cordial.
- `url` (text): The ingredient's page on TheCocktailDB.

List the alcoholic classifications drinks are filed under (Alcoholic, Non alcoholic, Optional alcohol), ready to feed into the by-alcoholic-status filter.

### List cocktails by first letter

List every cocktail whose name begins with one letter or digit, each with its full recipe. Useful for walking the whole database a letter at a time.

**Inputs**

- First character (`letter`, text, required): The letter or digit drink names must start with. One of: `A`, `B`, `C`, `D`, `E`, `F`, `G`, `H`, `I`, `J`, and 26 more.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number): How many records were returned.

- `letter` (text): The character that was listed, upper-cased.

List every drink served in one glass, such as a Cocktail glass, Highball glass or Champagne flute: the way to build a menu around the glassware you actually own.

### List cocktails by several ingredients

List the cocktails that contain every one of the ingredients you pick: the 'what can I make with what's on the shelf' search. Needs a Premium API key to return the full set; the free test key returns a sample.

- Ingredients (`ingredients`, list, required): Every ingredient a drink must contain. Pick at least one; the more you add, the fewer drinks match.
