# Urban Dictionary

> Look slang up in Urban Dictionary, the crowd-written dictionary the internet has been adding to since 1999. Define a term and get the example sentence its author wrote, browse every definition a term has, follow the slang its definitions link out to, or ask simply whether a word is defined at all, which is what a workflow reading chat messages usually needs. It also serves autocomplete suggestions, random definitions and the words of the day, plus the spoken audio and share images the site makes for every definition. No account or API key is required. Definitions are user-submitted and are often explicit.

## Actions

### Browse all of a term's definitions

Walk several pages of a term's definitions and get them back as one list, which is how to answer 'everything Urban Dictionary has on this' without a loop. Pages are 10 definitions each and the step stops as soon as it reaches the end of the term, so a short term costs one request however high the page limit is set. It reports how many pages it read and whether it reached the end.

**Inputs**

- Term (`term`, text, required): The slang term to look up. A phrase works as well as a single word, and capitals do not matter: Urban Dictionary matches either way and answers with the spelling its authors used.
- Most pages to read (`max_pages`, number): How many pages of 10 to walk through, at most. The step stops early as soon as it reaches the end of the term, so a term with 15 definitions costs 2 pages however high this is set. From 1 to 20. Default: `3`.
- Order (`sort`, text): What order to return the definitions in. Leave this empty to keep Urban Dictionary's own ranking, which puts the definition the site shows first at the top. One of: `relevance` (Top rated first: the order Urban Dictionary itself ranks them in), `newest` (Newest first: most recently written), `oldest` (Oldest first: the original definitions). Default: `relevance`.
- Written on or after (`written_after`, date): Keep only definitions submitted on or after this day. Leave this empty for no earliest date. Useful for telling new slang from a meaning a term has had since 2005.
- Written on or before (`written_before`, date): Keep only definitions submitted on or before this day. Leave this empty for no latest date.
- Most rows to return (`max_results`, number): The most rows to return. Leave this empty to get all of them. The answer always reports the total, so you can see when there were more. From 1 to 500.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number)
- `definitions` (list)
- `fetched` (number)
- `found` (true/false)
- `matched` (number)
- `pages_read` (number)
- `reached_end` (true/false)
- `requests_made` (number)
- `term` (text)

### Check whether a term is defined

Answer whether Urban Dictionary holds any definition for a term, as a true or false a step can branch on. A term nobody has defined answers false rather than failing the run, which is what makes this usable for screening words out of a message or deciding whether the rest of a workflow should go ahead.

**Inputs**

- Term (`term`, text, required): The slang term to look up. A phrase works as well as a single word, and capitals do not matter: Urban Dictionary matches either way and answers with the spelling its authors used.

**Outputs**

- `definition_count_on_page` (number)
- `exists` (true/false)
- `has_more_pages` (true/false)
- `permalink` (text)
- `term` (text)
- `top_definition` (text)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "definition_count_on_page": 10,
  "exists": true,
  "has_more_pages": true,
  "permalink": "https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Rizz&defid=17115763",
  "term": "Rizz",
  "top_definition": "Another word for spitting game/how good you are with pulling people."
}
```

### Define a term

Look a slang term up and get a page of its definitions, each with the example sentence its author wrote, who wrote it and when. Urban Dictionary answers 10 at a time in its own ranking order, so the first one back is the definition the website shows first. Narrow the page by the date a definition was written, or reorder it oldest or newest first, to tell a term's new meaning from the one it had a decade ago. A term nobody has defined comes back empty rather than failing.

**Inputs**

- Term (`term`, text, required): The slang term to look up. A phrase works as well as a single word, and capitals do not matter: Urban Dictionary matches either way and answers with the spelling its authors used.
- Page (`page`, number): Which page of 10 to fetch. Leave this empty for the first page, which holds the top definitions. Asking past the last page returns nothing rather than failing. From 1 to 1000.

### Define several terms

Look several terms up at once and get the top definition of each, which is what a step that has just pulled the unfamiliar words out of a message wants. A term nobody has defined is reported as not found rather than failing the whole list, and the found and not-found terms come back as their own lists so a later step can branch on either. At most 20 terms, because each one is a separate request.

**Inputs**

- Terms (`terms`, list, required): The terms to look up, one per row. At most 20 in one step, because each term is a separate request. Repeats are dropped.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number)
- `found` (list)
- `found_count` (number)
- `not_found` (list)
- `not_found_count` (number)
- `requests_made` (number)
- `results` (list)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "count": 2,
  "found": [
    "yeet"
  ],
  "found_count": 1,
  "not_found": [
    "zzzqqqxyzzy"
  ],
  "not_found_count": 1,
  "requests_made": 2,
      "example": "He yeeted the ball across the field.",
      "found": true,
    },
    {
      "author": "",
      "definition": "",
      "example": "",
      "found": false,
      "permalink": "",
      "term": "zzzqqqxyzzy",
      "written_date": ""
    }
  ]
}
```

### Get a term's audio and images

Get the spoken recording of a term and the ready-made card image of each of its definitions, which is what a Slack post or a social post wants instead of a wall of text. The audio link is signed by Urban Dictionary and stops working about a week after the step runs, so download or play it in the same workflow rather than storing it for later.

- Most rows to return (`max_results`, number): The most rows to return. Leave this empty to get all of them. The answer always reports the total, so you can see when there were more. From 1 to 500.

**Outputs**

- `audio_url` (text)
- `count` (number)
- `found` (true/false)
- `image_url` (text)
- `media` (list)
- `page` (number)
- `term` (text)
- `total` (number)

**Example output**

      "term": "Rizz"
    }
  ],
  "page": 1,
  "term": "Rizz",
  "total": 10
}
```
### Get a term's related slang
List the other slang a term's definitions link to, ranked by how many of them mention it. Urban Dictionary's authors mark related terms inside their own text and the site turns each one into a link, so this is how a workflow walks from one term out to the slang around it: 'rizz' leads to 'game' and 'charisma'. Feed a term back into 'Define a term' to keep going.
**Inputs**
- Term (`term`, text, required): The slang term to look up. A phrase works as well as a single word, and capitals do not matter: Urban Dictionary matches either way and answers with the spelling its authors used.
- Page (`page`, number): Which page of 10 to fetch. Leave this empty for the first page, which holds the top definitions. Asking past the last page returns nothing rather than failing. From 1 to 1000.
- Most rows to return (`max_results`, number): The most rows to return. Leave this empty to get all of them. The answer always reports the total, so you can see when there were more. From 1 to 500.
**Outputs**
- `count` (number)
- `definitions_read` (number)
- `found` (true/false)
- `page` (number)
- `related_terms` (list)
- `term` (text)
- `total` (number)
**Example output**
```json
{
  "count": 3,
  "definitions_read": 10,
  "found": true,
  "page": 1,
  "related_terms": [
    {
      "definitions_linking_to_it": 3,
      "term": "game"
    },
    {
      "definitions_linking_to_it": 2,
      "term": "charisma"
    },
    {
      "definitions_linking_to_it": 1,
      "term": "charm"
    }
  ],
  "term": "Rizz",
  "total": 47
}
```
### Get a term's top definition
Get only the top definition of a term, as flat fields, so a message can read the definition, the example and the link straight off the step without picking a row out of a list. The top definition is the one Urban Dictionary itself ranks first, which is what the website shows. A term nobody has defined answers with empty fields rather than failing.
**Inputs**
- Term (`term`, text, required): The slang term to look up. A phrase works as well as a single word, and capitals do not matter: Urban Dictionary matches either way and answers with the spelling its authors used.
**Outputs**
- `audio_url` (text)
- `author` (text)
- `definition` (text)
- `definition_count_on_page` (number)
- `definition_id` (number)
- `definition_markup` (text)
- `example` (text)
- `example_markup` (text)
- `found` (true/false)
- `image_url` (text)
- `linked_terms` (list)
- `permalink` (text)
- `term` (text)
- `written_date` (text)
- `written_on` (text)
**Example output**
```json

  "written_on": "2022-03-31T10:36:17.000Z"
}
```
### Get a term's usage examples
List the example sentences Urban Dictionary holds for a term, one per definition, beside the definition each one illustrates. Every definition is submitted with an example of the term in use, which is what shows how it is actually said rather than what it means. Definitions submitted without one are left out rather than returned blank.
**Inputs**
- Term (`term`, text, required): The slang term to look up. A phrase works as well as a single word, and capitals do not matter: Urban Dictionary matches either way and answers with the spelling its authors used.
- Page (`page`, number): Which page of 10 to fetch. Leave this empty for the first page, which holds the top definitions. Asking past the last page returns nothing rather than failing. From 1 to 1000.
- Order (`sort`, text): What order to return the definitions in. Leave this empty to keep Urban Dictionary's own ranking, which puts the definition the site shows first at the top. One of: `relevance` (Top rated first: the order Urban Dictionary itself ranks them in), `newest` (Newest first: most recently written), `oldest` (Oldest first: the original definitions). Default: `relevance`.
- Written on or after (`written_after`, date): Keep only definitions submitted on or after this day. Leave this empty for no earliest date. Useful for telling new slang from a meaning a term has had since 2005.
- Written on or before (`written_before`, date): Keep only definitions submitted on or before this day. Leave this empty for no latest date.
- Most rows to return (`max_results`, number): The most rows to return. Leave this empty to get all of them. The answer always reports the total, so you can see when there were more. From 1 to 500.
**Outputs**
### Get one definition by its link
Fetch exactly one definition, by the link or the id that identifies it. This is how a workflow comes back to the definition an earlier step saw, rather than re-running a search whose ranking may have shifted underneath it. A link that points at nothing fails the step, because a wrong id is a mistake rather than an answer.
**Inputs**
- Definition (`definition_id`, text, required): Which definition to fetch. Paste its Urban Dictionary link, or give the id on its own: both work. Every action that returns definitions reports the id and the link, so this is usually chained in from an earlier step.
**Outputs**
- `audio_url` (text)
- `author` (text)
- `definition` (text)
- `definition_id` (number)
- `definition_markup` (text)
- `example` (text)
- `example_markup` (text)
- `found` (true/false)
- `image_url` (text)
- `linked_terms` (list)
- `permalink` (text)
- `term` (text)
- `written_date` (text)
- `written_on` (text)
**Example output**
```json
{
  "audio_url": "https://cdn.urbdic.com/audio/tts/4/4/442e06-wat.mp3?Expires=1788469674",

```
### Get random definitions
Get 10 random definitions from anywhere in Urban Dictionary, different on every run, which is what a slang-of-the-day post or a word-game workflow runs on. The terms come back as their own list beside the full definitions, so a step that only needs the words does not have to walk the rows. Page reaches another random handful rather than the next one in an order: there is no order here to be next in.
**Inputs**
- Page (`page`, number): Which page of 10 to fetch. Leave this empty for the first page, which holds the top definitions. Asking past the last page returns nothing rather than failing. From 1 to 1000.
- Order (`sort`, text): What order to return the definitions in. Leave this empty to keep Urban Dictionary's own ranking, which puts the definition the site shows first at the top. One of: `relevance` (Top rated first: the order Urban Dictionary itself ranks them in), `newest` (Newest first: most recently written), `oldest` (Oldest first: the original definitions). Default: `relevance`.
- Most rows to return (`max_results`, number): The most rows to return. Leave this empty to get all of them. The answer always reports the total, so you can see when there were more. From 1 to 500.
**Outputs**
- `count` (number)
- `definitions` (list)
- `page` (number)
- `terms` (list)
- `top_definition` (text)
- `top_term` (text)
- `total` (number)
**Example output**
### Get the words of the day
Get the terms Urban Dictionary has picked as its word of the day, 10 per page, each with the day it was featured and the definition that went with it. This is what a daily digest, a newsletter section or a team channel post runs on. The featured day is the site's own label ('January 7') and carries no year; the date the definition itself was written is beside it as a real date.
**Inputs**
- Page (`page`, number): Which page of 10 to fetch. Leave this empty for the first page, which holds the top definitions. Asking past the last page returns nothing rather than failing. From 1 to 1000.
- Most rows to return (`max_results`, number): The most rows to return. Leave this empty to get all of them. The answer always reports the total, so you can see when there were more. From 1 to 500.
**Outputs**
- `count` (number)
- `page` (number)
- `terms` (list)
- `top_definition` (text)
- `top_term` (text)
- `total` (number)
- `words` (list)
**Example output**
```json
{
  "count": 1,
  "page": 1,
  "terms": [
    "age gate"
  ],
  "top_definition": "An absolutely foolproof way to keep minors from viewing content deemed \"too mature\" for them to watch.",

      "definition_markup": "An absolutely foolproof way to keep minors from viewing [content] deemed \"too [mature]\" for them to [watch].",
      "example": "I ran into an age gate, so I put in my real birthday.",

### Suggest terms for a prefix

Get up to 10 real Urban Dictionary headwords that start with what has been typed so far, as a plain list of words. This is the 'did you mean' step: it turns a half-remembered or misspelled term into ones the site actually holds, and it also answers whether the prefix is itself a defined term, so a spell-check needs only the one request.

**Inputs**

- Term (`term`, text, required): The slang term to look up. A phrase works as well as a single word, and capitals do not matter: Urban Dictionary matches either way and answers with the spelling its authors used.
- Most rows to return (`max_results`, number): The most rows to return. Leave this empty to get all of them. The answer always reports the total, so you can see when there were more. From 1 to 500.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number)
- `found` (true/false)
- `is_a_term` (true/false)
- `suggestions` (list)
- `term` (text)
- `total` (number)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "count": 5,
  "found": true,
  "is_a_term": true,
  "suggestions": [
    "watermelon sugar",
    "water",
    "watermelon",
    "Wattpad",
    "wat"
  ],
  "term": "wat",
  "total": 10
}
```

### Suggest terms with previews

The same suggestions as 'Suggest terms for a prefix', but each one carries the start of its top definition. That is enough to tell two similar-looking terms apart, or to pick the one that is actually meant, without spending a lookup on each of them. The preview is cut off mid-word by Urban Dictionary at around a hundred characters.

- `suggestions` (list)
- `term` (text)
- `terms` (list)
- `total` (number)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "count": 2,
  "found": true,
  "suggestions": [
    {
      "preview": "The name for a type of street heroine that originated in Southern Georgia in the late 1990's",
      "term": "watermelon sugar"
    },
    {
      "preview": "Liquid substance made famous by NOLF2.",
      "term": "water"
    }
  ],
  "term": "wat",
  "terms": [
    "watermelon sugar",
    "water"
  ],
  "total": 10
}
