## Actions

### Browse categories

Walk an edition's categories in alphabetical order, with how many pages, subcategories and files each one holds. Use a prefix to find the categories on a theme before listing what is in one.

**Inputs**

- Name starts with (`prefix`, text): Only categories whose name starts with this text. Leave empty to walk the whole list.
- Start at name (`start_from`, text): Begin at this category name alphabetically. Leave empty to start at the beginning of the list.
- How many categories (`limit`, number): The most categories to return. Defaults to 50. From 1 to 500. Default: `50`.
- Continue from (`continue_from`, text): Pick up where a previous run stopped: pass the 'next_page_token' that run returned. Leave empty to start at the beginning.
- Wikiquote edition (`language`, text): Which language edition of Wikiquote to read. The list is fetched from Wikimedia, so it is the editions Wikiquote currently has. Leave empty for English. Default: `en`.

**Outputs**

- `categories` (list)
- `count` (number)
- `language` (text)
- `next_page_token` (text): Pass to 'continue_from' for the next page; empty at the end.

**Example output**

```json
{
  "categories": [
    {
      "files": 0,
      "hidden": false,
      "name": "Physical chemistry",
  "language": "en",
  "next_page_token": "Physician_stubs"
}
```

### Get a page in other languages

List the other Wikiquote editions that have a page on the same subject, each with that edition's own title for it. Those titles are what a further call against that edition needs, so this is the way to read a person's quotes in their own language.

**Inputs**

- Page title (`title`, text, required): The title of the Wikiquote page, for example 'Albert Einstein', 'Courage' or 'The Matrix'. Redirects are followed, so 'Einstein' reaches the same page. Use Search Wikiquote or Suggest page titles to find one.
- How many editions (`limit`, number): The most editions to return. Defaults to 100. From 1 to 500. Default: `100`.
- Wikiquote edition (`language`, text): Which language edition of Wikiquote to read. The list is fetched from Wikimedia, so it is the editions Wikiquote currently has. Leave empty for English. Default: `en`.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number)
- `editions` (list)
- `language` (text)
- `pageid` (number)
- `title` (text)

**Example output**

```json
{
  "count": 2,
  "editions": [
    {
      "autonym": "Deutsch",
      "language": "de",
      "language_name": "German",
      "title": "Albert Einstein",
      "url": "https://de.wikiquote.org/wiki/Albert_Einstein"
    },
    {
      "autonym": "espa\u00f1ol",
      "language": "es",
      "language_name": "Spanish",
      "title": "Albert Einstein",
      "url": "https://es.wikiquote.org/wiki/Albert_Einstein"
    }
  ],
  "language": "en",
  "pageid": 2,
  "title": "Albert Einstein"
}
```

```
### Get page details
Get a page's metadata: how long it is, when it was last touched, its latest revision, how many editors watch it, and its links. This action does not follow redirects, so it is also how you find out that a title is one.
**Inputs**
- Page title (`title`, text, required): The exact title to report on. Unlike the other page actions this one does not follow redirects, so 'Einstein' reports the redirect rather than the page it points at.
- Wikiquote edition (`language`, text): Which language edition of Wikiquote to read. The list is fetched from Wikimedia, so it is the editions Wikiquote currently has. Leave empty for English. Default: `en`.
**Outputs**
- `edit_url` (text)
  "url": "https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Albert_Einstein",
  "watchers": 302
}
```

**Inputs**

- Page title (`title`, text, required): The title of the Wikiquote page, for example 'Albert Einstein', 'Courage' or 'The Matrix'. Redirects are followed, so 'Einstein' reaches the same page. Use Search Wikiquote or Suggest page titles to find one.
- Opening section only (`intro_only`, true/false): Return only the text above the first heading instead of the whole page. Defaults to the whole page. Default: `false`.
- Wikiquote edition (`language`, text): Which language edition of Wikiquote to read. The list is fetched from Wikimedia, so it is the editions Wikiquote currently has. Leave empty for English. Default: `en`.

  "pageid": 2,
  "title": "Albert Einstein",
  "url": "https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Albert_Einstein"
}
```
### Get quotes from a page
Read the quotations off a Wikiquote page as separate records, each with the sources, translations and notes filed under it and the section it sits in. Narrow to one section (and everything beneath it) to get, say, only a person's 1930s quotes or only the quotes about them.
**Inputs**
- Page title (`title`, text, required): The title of the Wikiquote page, for example 'Albert Einstein', 'Courage' or 'The Matrix'. Redirects are followed, so 'Einstein' reaches the same page. Use Search Wikiquote or Suggest page titles to find one.
- Only this section (`section`, text): Only quotations under this heading and its subsections, matched without regard to case. Use List the sections of a page to see what a page offers. Leave empty for the whole page.
- How many quotes (`limit`, number): The most quotations to return, from the top of the page down. Defaults to 100. From 1 to 500. Default: `100`.
- Wikiquote edition (`language`, text): Which language edition of Wikiquote to read. The list is fetched from Wikimedia, so it is the editions Wikiquote currently has. Leave empty for English. Default: `en`.
    {
      "section": "1930s",
      "section_path": [
        "Quotes",
        "1930s"
      ],
      ],
      "text": "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving."
    },
    {
      "section": "1930s",
      "section_path": [
        "Quotes",
        "1930s"
      ],
      "sources": [
        "As quoted in LIFE magazine (2 May 1955)"
      ],
      "text": "The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing."
    }
  ],
  "section": "1930s",
  "title": "Albert Einstein",
  "url": "https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Albert_Einstein"
### Get the pages a page links to
**Inputs**
- Page title (`title`, text, required): The title of the Wikiquote page, for example 'Albert Einstein', 'Courage' or 'The Matrix'. Redirects are followed, so 'Einstein' reaches the same page. Use Search Wikiquote or Suggest page titles to find one.
- Limit to these namespaces (`namespaces`, list): Only results in these parts of the wiki. Leave empty for every namespace. One or more of: `0` (Article - the quotation pages themselves), `14` (Category), `4` (Wikiquote - the project's own pages), `10` (Template), `6` (File), `2` (User), `12` (Help), `1` (Talk - discussion of an article), `3` (User talk), `828` (Module).
  "pageid": 2,
  "title": "Albert Einstein"
}
```

**Inputs**

- Page title (`title`, text, required): The title of the Wikiquote page, for example 'Albert Einstein', 'Courage' or 'The Matrix'. Redirects are followed, so 'Einstein' reaches the same page. Use Search Wikiquote or Suggest page titles to find one.
- Limit to these namespaces (`namespaces`, list): Only results in these parts of the wiki. Leave empty for every namespace. One or more of: `0` (Article - the quotation pages themselves), `14` (Category), `4` (Wikiquote - the project's own pages), `10` (Template), `6` (File), `2` (User), `12` (Help), `1` (Talk - discussion of an article), `3` (User talk), `828` (Module).

    }
  ],
  "title": "Albert Einstein"
}
```
### Get the quote of the day
Get English Wikiquote's quote of the day, for today or for any day in its archive. Editors fill the archive in ahead of time, so a date far in the future has nothing on it yet. This is an English Wikiquote feature, so it takes no edition.
**Inputs**
- Date (`date`, date): Which day's quote to get. Leave empty for today (UTC, which is the day Wikiquote's archive is keyed to).
**Outputs**
- `author` (text)
- `date` (text): The day this quote belongs to, as YYYY-MM-DD.
- `language` (text)
- `pageid` (number)
- `quote` (text)
- `title` (text): The archive page the quote was read from.
- `url` (text)
**Example output**
```json
{
  "author": "J. D. Salinger",
  "date": "2026-01-01",
  "language": "en",
  "pageid": 301561,
  "quote": "I don't really deeply feel that anyone needs an airtight reason for quoting from the works of writers he loves, but it's always nice, I'll grant you, if he has one.",
  "title": "Wikiquote:Quote of the day/January 1, 2026",
  "url": "https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Wikiquote:Quote_of_the_day/January_1,_2026"
}
```
### List recent changes
See what has changed on a Wikiquote edition lately: new pages, edits, moves and deletions, with who made each one and how the page's size moved. The wiki keeps this feed for about 30 days, so a window older than that comes back empty.
**Inputs**
- Limit to these namespaces (`namespaces`, list): Only results in these parts of the wiki. Leave empty for every namespace. One or more of: `0` (Article - the quotation pages themselves), `14` (Category), `4` (Wikiquote - the project's own pages), `10` (Template), `6` (File), `2` (User), `12` (Help), `1` (Talk - discussion of an article), `3` (User talk), `828` (Module).
- Kinds of change (`change_types`, list): Which kinds of change to include. Leave empty for all of them. One or more of: `edit` (Edits to existing pages), `new` (Newly created pages), `log` (Log entries such as deletions and moves), `categorize` (Pages added to or removed from a category).
- Filters (`filters`, list): Narrow the feed further, for example to skip bot edits or keep only new pages by logged-out users. Leave empty for no filtering. One or more of: `!minor` (Skip minor edits), `minor` (Only minor edits), `!bot` (Skip bot edits), `bot` (Only bot edits), `!anon` (Skip edits by logged-out users), `anon` (Only edits by logged-out users), `!redirect` (Skip redirects), `redirect` (Only redirects).
- Start at (`start`, date and time): Begin at this moment. Reading newest first this is the *latest* change to include; reading oldest first it is the earliest. Leave empty for the most recent changes.
- Stop at (`end`, date and time): Stop at this moment, the other end of the window from 'Start at'. Leave empty for no bound.
- Order by (`direction`, text): Which end of the feed to start from. One of: `older` (Newest first), `newer` (Oldest first). Default: `older`.
- How many changes (`limit`, number): The most changes to return. Defaults to 20. From 1 to 500. Default: `20`.
- Wikiquote edition (`language`, text): Which language edition of Wikiquote to read. The list is fetched from Wikimedia, so it is the editions Wikiquote currently has. Leave empty for English. Default: `en`.
**Outputs**
- `changes` (list)
- `count` (number)
- `direction` (text)
- `language` (text)
- `next_page_token` (text): Where the feed continues; empty at the end of the window.
**Example output**
### List the sections of a page
Get a page's table of contents. Wikiquote files a person's quotations under headings - a decade, a book, 'Quotes about' - so this is how you find out what to pass to Get quotes from a page's section filter.
**Inputs**
- Page title (`title`, text, required): The title of the Wikiquote page, for example 'Albert Einstein', 'Courage' or 'The Matrix'. Redirects are followed, so 'Einstein' reaches the same page. Use Search Wikiquote or Suggest page titles to find one.
- Wikiquote edition (`language`, text): Which language edition of Wikiquote to read. The list is fetched from Wikimedia, so it is the editions Wikiquote currently has. Leave empty for English. Default: `en`.
**Outputs**
- `count` (number)
- `language` (text)
- `pageid` (number)
- `sections` (list)
- `title` (text)
- `url` (text)
**Example output**
```json
{
  "count": 3,
  "language": "en",
  "pageid": 2,
  "sections": [
    {
      "anchor": "Quotes",
      "level": 1,
      "name": "Quotes",
      "number": "1"
    },
    {
      "anchor": "1930s",
      "level": 2,
      "name": "1930s",
      "number": "1.5"
    },
    {
      "anchor": "Quotes_about_Einstein",
      "level": 1,
      "name": "Quotes about Einstein",
      "number": "3"
    }
  ],
  "title": "Albert Einstein",
  "url": "https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Albert_Einstein"
}

### List what is in a category

List the pages, subcategories and files filed under one Wikiquote category. Categories are how the wiki groups its subjects - Physicists, American writers, Films - so this is the way to get every page on a theme.

**Inputs**

- Category (`category`, text, required): The category to list, with or without the 'Category:' prefix. Use Browse categories or Get a page's categories to find one.
- Include (`member_types`, list): Which kinds of member to return. Defaults to pages and subcategories. One or more of: `page` (Pages), `subcat` (Subcategories), `file` (Files).
- Order by (`sort`, text): How to order the members. Defaults to alphabetical. One of: `sortkey` (Alphabetically, by the category's sort key), `timestamp` (By when each page was added to the category). Default: `sortkey`.
- How many members (`limit`, number): The most members to return.

**Outputs**

- `category` (text)
- `count` (number)
- `language` (text)
- `members` (list)
- `next_page_token` (text): Pass to 'continue_from' for the next page; empty at the end.
- `sort` (text)

**Example output**

### Search Wikiquote

Search the full text of a Wikiquote edition and get the pages that match, each with a snippet showing the match in context. This searches the quotations themselves, so a phrase finds the pages that carry it.

**Inputs**

- Search for (`query`, text, required): What to search for. A plain phrase searches the page text; Wikiquote also accepts its own search keywords, such as insource:"a phrase" to require an exact phrase in the wikitext.
- How many results (`limit`, number): The most results to return. Defaults to 10. From 1 to 50. Default: `10`.
- Skip this many (`offset`, number): Skip this many results before returning any: pass the 'next_offset' from a previous run to get the next page. Leave empty to start at the first result. From 0 to 10000. Default: `0`.
- Order results by (`sort`, text): How to order the results. Defaults to best match. One of: `relevance` (Best match first), `last_edit_desc` (Most recently edited first), `last_edit_asc` (Least recently edited first), `create_timestamp_desc` (Newest pages first), `create_timestamp_asc` (Oldest pages first), `incoming_links_desc` (Most linked-to first), `incoming_links_asc` (Least linked-to first), `title_natural_asc` (Title, A to Z), `title_natural_desc` (Title, Z to A), `just_match` (Fastest, in no particular order), `random` (Shuffled). Default: `relevance`.
- Search in (`namespace`, text): Which part of the wiki to search. Defaults to the quotation pages. One of: `0` (Article - the quotation pages themselves), `14` (Category), `4` (Wikiquote - the project's own pages), `10` (Template), `6` (File), `2` (User), `12` (Help), `1` (Talk - discussion of an article), `3` (User talk), `828` (Module). Default: `0`.
- Wikiquote edition (`language`, text): Which language edition of Wikiquote to read. The list is fetched from Wikimedia, so it is the editions Wikiquote currently has. Leave empty for English. Default: `en`.

**Outputs**

- `count` (number)
- `language` (text)
- `next_offset` (number): Offset of the next page of results, or empty at the end.
- `offset` (number)
- `query` (text)
- `results` (list)
- `sort` (text)
- `total_hits` (number): How many pages match in total.
