# Wolne Lektury

> Read Wolne Lektury, the free digital library of Polish literature: several thousand works, most of them school set texts, each with an ebook in every common format and often a human-read audiobook. Search by title or author, browse by epoch, kind or genre, pull a work's full text or download links into a workflow, and search the library's hand-made index of literary themes down to the individual passage. No account or API key is required.

### Find fragments

Find the passages the library's editors have indexed under a theme (love, death, betrayal, the passing of time) and, optionally, narrowed to one author, epoch, kind or genre. This index is hand-made and goes down to the passage, so it answers 'what does Polish Romanticism say about the homeland' rather than 'which books mention it'. At least one filter is required. A listing names each passage; turn on 'Include the text' to fetch the words too. Wolne Lektury serves this listing whole, so a broad theme is cut to the number of results you ask for and 'total_count' reports how many there were.

**Inputs**

- Theme (`theme`, text): Only passages indexed under this theme, given as a slug such as 'zabawa' (fun) or 'milosc' (love). List tags for 'theme' returns every slug the library accepts.
- Author (`author`, text): Only works by this author, given as a slug such as 'adam-mickiewicz'. List tags for 'author' returns every slug the library accepts.
- Epoch (`epoch`, text): Only works from this literary epoch, given as a slug. List tags for 'epoch' returns every slug the library accepts.
- Kind (`literary_kind`, text): Only works of this literary kind -- poetry, prose or drama -- given as a slug. List tags for 'kind' returns every slug the library accepts.
- Genre (`genre`, text): Only works of this genre, given as a slug. List tags for 'genre' returns every slug the library accepts.
- Number of fragments (`max_results`, number): How many passages to return, from 1 to 500. Defaults to 50. Wolne Lektury serves this listing in one piece with no page size of its own, so a broad theme sends every passage carrying it; 'total_count' says how many it sent. From 1 to 500.
- Include the text (`include_text`, true/false): Fetch each passage's words as well as its address. The listing itself does not carry them, so this costs one extra request per passage. Off by default. Default: `false`.
- How many texts to fetch (`max_texts`, number): With 'Include the text' on, how many passages to fetch the words for, from 1 to 25. Defaults to 10. The rest are still listed, just without their text. From 1 to 25.

### Get a book

Fetch one work by its slug, with its authors and translators, its epoch, kind and genre, a download link for every format it is published in, every audiobook file recorded for it, its cover, and the works it contains or belongs to.

Fetch one curated collection: what it is for, every work on it, and the authors it is built around. List collections returns the slug this takes.

### Get a fragment

Fetch one indexed passage: its words, the work and author it comes from, and every theme the library's editors filed it under. Find fragments returns the work and the anchor this takes. The passage is stored as web page markup, so it comes back both as readable text and, as 'text_html', with the original markup and its emphasis intact.

### Get a tag

Fetch one author, epoch, kind, genre or theme, with the editorial description the library writes for it: a biographical note for an author, an account of the period for an epoch, a definition for a genre. Use it to explain a term a search or a listing returned. The library writes these notes as web page markup, so they come back both as readable text and, as 'description_html', in the original markup.

- Vocabulary (`category`, text, required): Which vocabulary the term belongs to. One of: `author` (Authors), `epoch` (Epochs (Romanticism, Positivism, …)), `kind` (Kinds (poetry, prose, drama)), `genre` (Genres (sonnet, novel, fable, …)), `theme` (Themes (the passage-level index)).
- Term (`slug`, text, required): The term's slug, such as 'edgar-allan-poe' or 'romantyzm'. List tags returns this as each result's 'slug'.

### Get book text

Download the full text of a work, ready to summarise, quote or search. The file opens with the author and the title and closes with the library's licence and provenance notice; the notice is removed by default, and the text is cut off at the character limit you set.

**Inputs**

- Work (`slug`, text, required): The work's slug: the last part of its address on wolnelektury.pl, for example 'studnia-i-wahadlo' in https://wolnelektury.pl/katalog/lektura/studnia-i-wahadlo/. Search books and List books both return this as each result's 'slug'.
- Maximum characters (`max_characters`, number): How much of the text to return, from 1,000 to 500,000 characters. Defaults to 50,000 (roughly 25 pages). 'truncated' tells you whether the work was longer than this. From 1000 to 500000.
- Remove the Wolne Lektury licence notice (`strip_licence_footer`, true/false): Strip the licence, source and editorial notice the library appends after the end of the work, so only the work itself is returned. On by default. Default: `true`.

### Get download links

List every file Wolne Lektury publishes for a work (plain text, PDF, EPUB, Kindle, FictionBook, HTML and the library's own source XML, plus every audiobook file), each with a readable label and a direct URL. Pick a format to also get its URL on its own, ready to hand to a download step. An audiobook is normally one file per chapter, so a chosen audio format returns the whole list as well as the first file.

**Inputs**

- Work (`slug`, text, required): The work's slug: the last part of its address on wolnelektury.pl, for example 'studnia-i-wahadlo' in https://wolnelektury.pl/katalog/lektura/studnia-i-wahadlo/. Search books and List books both return this as each result's 'slug'.
- Format to select (`file_format`, text): Optional. Pick a format to have its URL returned on its own as 'selected_url'. The full list of files is returned either way. ### List books

Browse one of the catalogue's shelves: every work, whole works only, the ones with a human-read audiobook, the ones with a DAISY accessible audiobook, the editors' picks, or the most recently published. Narrow any of the first four by author, epoch, kind and genre together. Two of the shelves return each work's download links in place of its epoch, kind, genre and audio flag: 'has_download_links' on the result says which shape came back.

- Shelf (`catalogue`, text): Which listing to read. Defaults to every work. One of: `books` (Every work (default)), `parent_books` (Whole works only, not their parts), `audiobooks` (Works with a human-read audiobook), `daisy` (Works with a DAISY accessible audiobook), `ebooks` (Every work, with download links instead of tags), `parent_ebooks` (Whole works only, with download links instead of tags), `recommended` (Editors' picks (takes no filters)), `newest` (Most recently published (takes no filters or paging)).

### List collections

List the library's curated collections: the reading lists its editors put together, such as the set texts for a school year or a selection on one subject. Each comes back with the slug Get a collection takes.

### List tags

List the library's authors, literary epochs, kinds, genres or themes, each with the slug every other action's filters take. This is where those slugs come from: the library's vocabularies are curated by its editors, so nothing else can be relied on to spell them. Terms come back in slug order, so a large vocabulary can be walked a page at a time with 'Continue after'.

**Inputs**

- Vocabulary (`category`, text, required): Which of the library's vocabularies to list. One of: `author` (Authors), `epoch` (Epochs (Romanticism, Positivism, …)), `kind` (Kinds (poetry, prose, drama)), `genre` (Genres (sonnet, novel, fable, …)), `theme` (Themes (the passage-level index)).
- Number of terms (`count`, number): How many terms to return, from 1 to 1,000. Defaults to 100. Wolne Lektury serves a vocabulary in one piece with no page size of its own, so the list is cut to size here and 'total_count' says how many terms there are in all. From 1 to 1000.
- Continue after (`after`, text): Feed the 'next_after' value from a previous run back in here to get the next page. Leave empty for the first page.

### Search books

Search the Wolne Lektury catalogue by title and by author. Words match from the start of a word, so 'pan' finds 'Pan Tadeusz'; works whose author matched are returned before works whose title did. Every filter is optional and they combine: narrow to an author, an epoch, a kind or a genre, to works that have an audiobook, or to the ones Polish schools set as required reading.

**Inputs**

- Search words (`search`, text): Text to match against titles and author names, at least three characters long. Leave empty to browse with the filters alone.
- Authors (`authors`, list): Only works by any of these authors, given as slugs such as 'adam-mickiewicz'. Unlike List books, several may be given and a work matching any one of them is returned. List tags for 'author' returns the slugs.
- Epochs (`epochs`, list): Only works from any of these literary epochs, given as slugs. List tags for 'epoch' returns the slugs.
- Kinds (`kinds`, list): Only works of any of these literary kinds -- poetry, prose or drama -- given as slugs. List tags for 'kind' returns the slugs.
- Genres (`genres`, list): Only works of any of these genres, given as slugs. List tags for 'genre' returns the slugs.
- Has an audiobook (`audiobook`, true/false): Set to true for only works with a recorded audiobook, false for only works without one. Leave empty for both.
- School set text (`school_reading`, true/false): Set to true for only the works Polish schools set as required reading (the library's 'lektura' flag), false for only the rest. Leave empty for both.
- Number of results (`count`, number): How many works to return, from 1 to 200. Defaults to 50. From 1 to 200.
- Continue after (`after`, text): Feed the 'next_after' value from a previous run back in here to get the next page. Leave empty for the first page.
