Chuck Norris Jokes

App · Misc References · 7 actions

Pull Chuck Norris facts from chucknorris.io, the free hand-curated joke API. Draw one at random or a batch of them, narrow to a category such as dev, movie or sport, search every fact for a subject, look one up by id, or pick a fact of the day that stays the same all day so a scheduled post never tells two. Swap a colleague's name in for Chuck Norris, and keep the explicit category out of a team channel: it is left out unless you ask for it.

Get a random jokeGet one random Chuck Norris fact, ready to post, with a link back to it.

Search jokesFind the facts that mention something, a name, a language or a place, best match first.

Check service status

Check whether chucknorris.io is answering, and how quickly. This is the one action that reports a problem as a value instead of failing the step, so a workflow can decide what to do about it. Being throttled at the edge is reported separately from being down.

Inputs

None.

Outputs

messagetext
onlinetrue/false
rate_limitedtrue/false

  "response_time_ms": 86.4,
  "status_code": 200
}

Get a joke by id

Get one specific fact by its id, for re-posting a fact an earlier step found. Ids are opaque strings the service assigns once and never reuses, so an id stored last month still means the same fact. A full chucknorris.io joke URL is accepted in place of the bare id.

Inputs

Joke IDjoke_idtextRequired
The fact's id, or the full chucknorris.io link to it. Usually this comes from an earlier step: every action here returns the id of each fact it hands back.
Name to swap innametext
Swap someone else's name in for Chuck Norris, the way the service's own Slack app does. 'Ada' turns 'Chuck Norris can divide by zero' into 'Ada can divide by zero'. The untouched fact is always returned too, as 'value', so you can see whether the swap landed: a fact that never names him in full comes back unchanged. Leave empty to post it as written.

Get a random joke

Get one random Chuck Norris fact, ready to post, with a link back to it. Narrow it to a category such as dev or movie, or leave the category empty to draw from the whole catalogue. Swap in a colleague's name to personalise it. Explicit facts are skipped unless you ask for them.

Inputs

Categorycategorytext
Only draw from this category. The service publishes categories such as animal, career, celebrity, dev, food, history, money, movie, music, science, sport and travel; run Get joke categories for the current list. Leave empty to draw from every fact, which is where most of them are: the catalogue is mostly uncategorised.
Include explicit jokesinclude_explicittrue/false
Allow facts from the explicit category, which holds adult material. Off by default, so a step posting to a team channel cannot draw one by accident. Choosing the explicit category counts as asking for them, and is not filtered.Default: false.

Get random jokes

Get several different Chuck Norris facts at once, up to 20, optionally all from one category. No fact is drawn twice in the same batch. The service returns one random fact per request, so a batch costs a request per fact and a little more; asking a small category for more than it holds returns what there is rather than failing.

Inputs

Number of jokescountnumber
How many facts to draw, from 1 to 20. Defaults to 5.From 1 to 20.
Categorycategorytext
Only draw from this category. The service publishes categories such as animal, career, celebrity, dev, food, history, money, movie, music, science, sport and travel; run Get joke categories for the current list. Get the joke of the day

Pick one fact for a day and keep picking that same fact all day. A random draw gives a different one on every call, so a daily workflow that retries, or that two people run an hour apart, posts two different facts for the one day. This one is fixed by the date: the same date always gives the same fact, and tomorrow gives a different one. Add a seed of your own to have two workspaces post different facts on the same day.

Inputs

Daydatedate
The day to pick a fact for. Leave empty for today in UTC, which is what a scheduled step wants.
Seedseedtext
Any text you like, mixed into the day so that two workspaces running this on the same day get different facts. Leave empty to share the day's fact with everyone else.
Include explicit jokesinclude_explicittrue/false
Allow facts from the explicit category, which holds adult material. Off by default, so a step posting to a team channel cannot draw one by accident. Choosing the explicit category counts as asking for them, and is not filtered.Default: false.

Search jokes

Find the facts that mention something, a name, a language or a place, best match first. The service publishes no relevance of its own, so matches are ranked here with a whole-word hit worth far more than one buried inside a longer word. Narrow to a category, and see how many explicit matches were left out. The query must be 3 to 120 characters, which is the service's own limit.

Inputs

Search forquerytextRequired
The word or phrase to look for in the facts, 3 to 120 characters.
Categorycategorytext
Only keep matches in this category. The service's search takes no category of its own, so this is applied to its results. Leave empty to search every fact.
Number of resultslimitnumber
How many matches to return, from 1 to 100. Defaults to 10. The total number of matches is always reported, however many are returned. From 1 to 100.
Include explicit jokesinclude_explicittrue/false
Allow facts from the explicit category, which holds adult material. Off by default, so a step posting to a team channel cannot draw one by accident. Choosing the explicit category counts as asking for them, and is not filtered.Default: false.
