Federal Register
App · Misc References · 14 actions
The daily journal of the United States government. Every rule, proposed rule, notice and presidential document a federal agency publishes appears in the Federal Register, and all of it since 1994 is here: search it by agency, subject, docket, RIN, part of the Code of Federal Regulations, or distance from a place; read a whole day's issue the way it is printed; count what is being published and by whom; and watch the public inspection desk to see what is coming before it appears. Every document carries the agency's own summary, the day it takes effect and the day comments close, so a workflow can raise an alert on a deadline that matters. Free and open: no account or API key required.

Count documents
Count matching documents and break the total down by month, agency, topic, document type or any other grouping, without fetching the documents themselves. This is how to answer 'which agencies published most about this?' or 'is this picking up?' in one step. Takes exactly the same filters as Search documents. No API key required.
Inputs
- Break the counts down by
group_bytext - What to group the counts by. Grouping by day over a long range returns a lot of rows, so pair it with a date range. One of:
daily(Day),weekly(Week),monthly(Month),quarterly(Quarter),yearly(Year),agency,topic,section,type(Document type),subtype(Document subtype). Default:monthly. - Search text
termtext - Optional. Words to look for in the full text of a document. Put a phrase in quotes to keep it together ("clean water"), and separate alternatives with a vertical bar to match any of them ("wildfire" | "prescribed burn"). Leave blank to match everything and rely on the filters below.
- Agencies
agencieslist - Optional. Only documents published by these agencies. The list comes from the Federal Register itself, so it is every agency that publishes: all 470-odd of them, departments and sub-agencies alike. Leave empty for every agency.
- Document types
document_typeslist - Optional. Only these kinds of document. A final rule is law; a proposed rule is what an agency intends to do and is usually open for comment; a notice is everything else an agency must announce; a presidential document is an executive order, proclamation or memorandum. Leave empty for all four. One or more of:
RULE(Final rule),PRORULE(Proposed rule),NOTICE,PRESDOCU(Presidential document). - Published on or after
published_fromdate - Optional. Only documents published on or after this date. The Federal Register's online record starts in 1994. Set this and 'Published on or before' to the same day to read a single issue.
- Published on or before
published_todate - Optional. Only documents published on or before this date. Leave blank to run up to today.
- Topics
topicslist - Optional. Only documents indexed under these subject terms. These are the Code of Federal Regulations' own indexing terms, such as 'Air pollution control' or 'Motor vehicle safety', and are far more specific than the subject areas below. Leave empty for every topic.
- Subject areas
sectionslist - Optional. Only documents filed under these subject areas: the six broad headings FederalRegister.gov browses by. Use topics above for anything narrower. Leave empty for all six.One or more of:
business-and-industry(Business and industry),environment,health-and-public-welfare(Health and public welfare),money,science-and-technology(Science and technology),world. - Significance
significancetext - Whether to narrow to the rules deemed significant under Executive Order 12866, which are the ones that went through White House review before being published. Both by default. One of:
any(Both, significant or not),significant(Significant only),not_significant(Not significant only). Default:any. - Takes effect on or after
effective_fromdate - Optional. Only documents that take effect on or after this date. A rule is usually published weeks before it takes effect, so this is the date to filter on when the question is 'what changes soon?' rather than 'what was announced?'.
- Takes effect on or before
effective_todate - Optional. Only documents that take effect on or before this date.
- Docket number
docket_idtext - Optional. Only documents filed under this agency docket, which is how a single rulemaking is followed from proposal to final rule. Every document reports its own docket numbers.
- Regulation ID number (RIN)
regulation_id_numbertext - Optional. Only documents carrying this Regulation Identifier Number, which the government assigns to a rulemaking and keeps for its whole life. Every document reports its own.
- Code of Federal Regulations title
cfr_titletext - Optional. Only documents that change this title of the Code of Federal Regulations, the permanent rulebook the Federal Register amends. Leave blank for every title. One of:
1(Title 1: General Provisions),2(Title 2: Federal Financial Assistance),3(Title 3: The President),4(Title 4: Accounts),5(Title 5: Administrative Personnel),6(Title 6: Domestic Security),7(Title 7: Agriculture),8(Title 8: Aliens and Nationality),9(Title 9: Animals and Animal Products),10(Title 10: Energy), and 39 more. - Code of Federal Regulations part
cfr_parttext - Optional. Narrow the title above to one part, or a range of parts. Needs a title to be chosen as well, since parts are numbered within a title.
- Presidential document types
presidential_document_typeslist - Optional. Only these kinds of presidential document. Applies to presidential documents only, so it will not narrow a search for agency rules or notices. One or more of:
executive_order(Executive order),proclamation,memorandum,determination,notice,presidential_order(Presidential order),other. - Signed by
presidentslist - Optional. Only presidential documents signed by these presidents. The Federal Register's online record starts partway through the Clinton administration, in 1994.One or more of:
donald-trump(Donald Trump),joe-biden(Joe Biden),barack-obama(Barack Obama),george-w-bush(George W. Bush),william-j-clinton(Bill Clinton). - Near this place
near_locationtext - Optional. Only documents about somewhere near here: a ZIP code, or a city and state. This is how to find the rules and notices that touch one area: a port, a wildlife refuge, an airport, a clean-air plan.
- Within this many miles
near_within_milesnumber - How far from that place to look, in miles. Only used when a place is given above. From 1 to 200. Default:
25.
Outputs
group_bytext- What the counts were grouped by.
group_by_labeltext- That grouping's readable name.
group_countnumber- How many groups came back.
groupslist- The counts, biggest first, so the first row is the answer to 'which one most?'.
total_countnumber- Every group's count added up. Unlike a search's total, this is exact however large it is.

}Get an issue's table of contents
Read one day's issue the way the printed Federal Register lays it out: every document grouped under the agency that published it and the kind of document it is. This is the answer to 'what came out today?', a briefing rather than a search. The Federal Register publishes every federal business day, so a weekend or a holiday has no issue and says so. No API key required.
Inputs
- Issue date
publication_datedateRequired - Which day's issue to read. The Federal Register publishes on federal business days, from 1994 onwards.
Outputs
agencieslist- The agencies in the issue, in the order it prints them.

Get several published documents in one step, by their document numbers. Use this instead of a step per document when a workflow has collected numbers over time: from a table of contents, a docket, or a week of alerts. A number with nothing behind it is reported rather than failing the step. No API key required.
Inputs
- Document numbers
document_numberslistRequired - The document numbers of the documents to fetch. Add them one at a time, or paste a comma-separated list. Numbers that turn out not to exist come back under 'not found' rather than failing the step.
Outputs

}Search documents
Search everything the U.S. government has published in the Federal Register since 1994: final rules, proposed rules, notices and presidential documents. Narrow by agency, document type, subject, publication or effective date, docket, RIN, part of the Code of Federal Regulations, or distance from a place. Every result carries the agency's own summary, when the rule takes effect and when comments close, so a workflow can alert on a deadline without fetching the document again. No API key required.
Inputs
Default:
25. - Order
sorttext - What order to return the documents in. Newest first by default, which is what a monitoring workflow wants. Best match only means something alongside search text. One of:
newest(Newest first),oldest(Oldest first),relevance(Best match (needs search text)),executive_order_number(Executive order number). Default:newest. - Number of documents
limitnumber - How many documents to return from this page. Between 1 and 1,000; 20 by default. From 1 to 1000. Default:
20. - Page
pagenumber - Which page of results to return. 1 by default; the result hands back the next page number to use. The Federal Register serves at most 50 pages for one search, so narrow the dates or the agencies rather than paging past that. From 1 to 50. Default:
1.
Outputs
countnumber- How many are on this page.
documentslist- The documents on this page.
has_moretrue/false- True when there is another page. This is the field to loop on.
next_pagenumber- The page number to ask for next, or nothing when this was the last one.
pagenumber- Which page this is.
query_descriptiontext- The Federal Register's own plain-English summary of what was searched for, e.g. "Documents matching 'climate', published on or after 08/01/2026". Worth putting at the top of a digest.
total_countnumber- How many matched altogether. The Federal Register stops counting at 10,000, so check 'total count is capped' before quoting it.
total_count_is_cappedtrue/false- True when there were too many matches to count exactly, so the total above is really 'at least that many'. Narrow the search to get an exact figure.
total_pagesnumber- How many pages can be reached, at this many per page.
