An API of Ice and Fire

App · Film, TV & Fandom · 9 actions

Look up the world of A Song of Ice and Fire - and of HBO's Game of Thrones - using An API of Ice and Fire, the free, keyless, community database of the books. Search the books by title or release date, the characters by name, culture, gender, birth, death or whether they are still alive, and the houses by region, words, seats, titles, ancestral weapons or whether they have died out. Fetch any single record by id, or take the shortcuts the raw endpoints do not offer: the narrators of a book, a character's parents, spouse and allegiances, or a house's lord, heir, founder and sworn members, each resolved in one step. No account or API key required. Disclaimer: this is an independent integration with the community-run An API of Ice and Fire (anapioficeandfire.com), created by Joakim Skoog. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by George R. R. Martin, Bantam Books, Penguin Random House, or HBO; A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones and all related names, characters and trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

Get a book's POV characters

Get the characters who narrate a book, as whole records rather than the URLs the book carries: who they are, what they are called, whether they are alive, and who played them on screen. Pick a book, or reference one from an earlier step by its id or by one of the API's book URLs.
Limitlimitnumber
Optional. How many linked records to fetch, 1 to 50 (default 10). Each one is a separate request to the API, and the result says how many were left behind. From 1 to 50. Default: 10.

Outputs

The book's title.
countnumber
How many narrators were fetched.

Get a character's relations

Get a character together with their father, mother, spouse and the houses they are sworn to, all resolved into whole records in one step. The API links each of those by URL, so reading a family through the endpoints alone is a step per relative. A relative the API does not record comes back as null rather than as an error - most characters have no recorded parents.

Inputs

Charactercharacter_idtextRequired
The character's id, or one of the API's character URLs from an earlier step.

Outputs

allegiance_countnumber
How many houses were fetched.
allegianceslist
The houses they are sworn to.
characterobject
The character themselves.
fatherobject
Their father, or null when the API records none.
has_parentstrue/false
True when a father or a mother was found.
motherobject
Their mother, or null when the API records none.
relatives_foundnumber
How many of the father, mother and spouse the API had on record, 0 to 3.
spouseobject
Their spouse, or null when the API records none.
total_allegiancesnumber
How many houses the character is sworn to in total.

Get a house's members

Get who a house is: its current lord, heir, founder and overlord, plus its sworn members, all resolved into whole records in one step. The house links every one of them by URL, and the great houses have hundreds of sworn members, so the sworn-member lookups stop at the limit you set and the result says how many were left behind.

Inputs

Househouse_idtextRequired
Pick a house, or reference one from an earlier step by its id or by one of the API's house URLs.
Limitlimitnumber
Optional. How many linked records to fetch, 1 to 50 (default 10). Each one is a separate request to the API, and the result says how many were left behind. From 1 to 50. Default: 10.

Outputs

current_lordobject
Its current lord, or null when the API records none.
founderobject
The character who founded it, or null when unrecorded.
has_moretrue/false
True when the limit stopped short of the house's full list of sworn members.
heirobject
Its heir, or null when the API records none.
house_idnumber
The id of the house that was read.
house_nametext
The house's name.
limitnumber
The limit this step ran with.
overlordobject
The house it answers to, or null when it answers to none.
sworn_member_countnumber

Search books

List the books of A Song of Ice and Fire, optionally filtered by title or by when they were released. Each book comes back with its ISBN, publisher, page count, release date, and the ids of every character in it and every character who narrates a chapter of it. With no filter set this is the whole bibliography, novellas included. No API key required.

Inputs

Titlenametext
Optional. Filter by the book's title, e.g. 'A Game of Thrones'. The API matches the whole value rather than part of one, so it has to be spelled the way the API spells it.
Released on or afterfrom_release_datedate
Optional. Only include books released on or after this date.
Released on or beforeto_release_datedate
Optional. Only include books released on or before this date.
Pagepagenumber
Optional. Which page of results to return; the first page by default. Each result carries the next page number when there is one, so a workflow can walk the whole set. From 1 to 100000. Default: 1.
Results per pagepage_sizenumber
Optional. How many records to return per page, 1 to 50 (default 10). The API serves no more than that in one page. From 1 to 50. Default: 10.

Outputs

bookslist
The matching books, in the API's own order.
countnumber
How many records came back on this page.
has_moretrue/false
True when the API offered a next page.
next_pagenumber
The page number to ask for next, or null on the last page.
pagenumber
Which page this is.
page_sizenumber
How many records a full page holds.
previous_pagenumber
The page number before this one, or null on the first page.
total_pagesnumber
How many pages the search has in total, from the API's own paging links. Zero when nothing matched, and null when there is more to come but the API did not say how much. The API publishes no total record count anywhere, so there is none to report.

Search characters

Search the characters of the world of Ice and Fire by name, gender, culture, where or when they were born or died, and whether they are still alive. Each one comes back with their titles, aliases, the houses they are sworn to, the books they appear in, the seasons of Game of Thrones they appear in and the actors who played them. This is also how a workflow turns a name into the id the other character actions take.

Inputs

Namenametext
Optional. Filter by the character's name, e.g. 'Jon Snow'. The API matches the whole value rather than part of one, so it has to be spelled the way the API spells it. Many characters are held under an alias instead of a name, so a search that finds nothing is worth retrying against the alias.
Gendergendertext
Optional. Filter by gender. One of: Male, Female, Unknown.
Cultureculturetext
Optional. Filter by the culture a character belongs to, e.g. 'Braavosi' or 'Northmen'. The API matches the whole value rather than part of one, so it has to be spelled the way the API spells it.
Bornborntext
Optional. Filter by the API's own text for when and where a character was born, e.g. 'In 283 AC'. It is free text in the data, so this matches the whole phrase as the API spells it.
Dieddiedtext
Optional. Filter by the API's own text for when and where a character died, e.g. 'In 300 AC, at Castle Black'. Free text in the data, matched whole.
Aliveis_alivetrue/false
Optional. Yes for characters the API records no death for, No for the dead. Leave it unset for both.
Pagepagenumber
Optional. Which page of results to return; the first page by default. Each result carries the next page number when there is one, so a workflow can walk the whole set. From 1 to 100000. Default: 1.
