Lemmy

App · Social Media · 10 actions

Read Lemmy, the open network of community forums, from a workflow. Watch a community's posts, pull a whole discussion in reading order, search every server your own one can see for a name or a topic, look up a community before you post in it or a person before you act on what they said, and follow a community's public moderation log. Every result carries the handle and the link a later step needs, so a scheduled workflow can turn a community into a digest, a keyword into an alert, or a thread into a summary. Set 'Only what is newer than' and a run never reports the same post twice. Every action reads: nothing here posts, votes or subscribes. No account or API key required.

Actions

ActionWhat it does
Get a commentRead one comment: what it says, who wrote it, what it answers, how it scored and which post and community it belongs to.
Get a communityLook up one community: what it is for, its rules, how many people follow it, how busy it has been this month and who moderates it.
Get a personLook up somebody: their profile, when they joined, how much they have written, which communities they moderate, and their latest posts and comments.
Get a postRead one post in full, along with the community it was posted in - its rules, its size and who moderates it - and anywhere the same link was cross-posted.
Get server detailsDescribe the Lemmy server this connection reads: its name, what it is for, its rules, how many people and communities it holds, how many are active this month, whether sign-ups are open and who its admins are.
List comments on a postRead a post's discussion, in the order a person would read it: every reply follows the comment it answers, and each one says how deep it sits.
List communitiesBrowse the communities your server carries, busiest or biggest first.
List moderation actionsRead the public moderation log as one list of events in time order: posts removed, comments removed, people banned, moderators added, communities purged.
List postsRead a feed of posts: one community's, or everything your server can see.
Search LemmySearch your server and everything it federates with, for posts, comments, communities or people.

Get a comment

Read one comment: what it says, who wrote it, what it answers, how it scored and which post and community it belongs to. Takes the comment's address or its number, both of which come out of any listing or search here. Use it to pull the full text of a comment a search only showed the start of.

Inputs

CommentcommenttextRequired
The comment to read: its number, or its full address on the server this connection reads. Comment numbers belong to the server that answers, so a link copied from a different Lemmy server is refused rather than quietly fetching an unrelated comment.

Outputs

commentobject
The comment, with the post and community it belongs to

Get a community

Look up one community: what it is for, its rules, how many people follow it, how busy it has been this month and who moderates it. This is the step to run before a workflow posts anywhere near a community, and the quickest way to tell a 50-subscriber namesake on your own server from the 80,000- subscriber one everybody means.

Inputs

CommunitycommunitytextRequired
The community to read. The list is the busiest communities on your server, and you can type any other community's handle beside it - !linux@lemmy.ml, or its address such as https://lemmy.ml/c/linux. Always include the @server part: a bare 'linux' means your own server's community of that name, which is usually a different and much smaller place.

Outputs

Get a person

Look up somebody: their profile, when they joined, how much they have written, which communities they moderate, and their latest posts and comments. Use it to weigh a comment before acting on it - a three-day-old account with four comments reads differently from a moderator of the community it was posted in - or to follow one person's activity.

Inputs

PersonpersontextRequired
Whose profile to read. Their handle (@ruud@lemmy.world), their profile address (https://lemmy.world/u/ruud) or their id all work. Include the @server part for somebody whose account is on another server, or your server will look for a local account of that name.
Order their activity bysorttext
What to put first among their posts and comments. 'Newest first' is what they have been doing lately; 'Top of all time' is what they are known for.One of: Active (Active: busiest discussions first), Hot (Hot: rising right now), New (Newest first), Scaled (Scaled: hot, but fairer to small communities), TopDay (Top today), TopWeek (Top this week), TopMonth (Top this month), TopYear (Top this year), TopAll (Top of all time), MostComments (Most comments), NewComments (Most recently replied to), Controversial (Controversial: voted hard both ways). Default: New.
How much activitylimitnumber

Get a post

Read one post in full, along with the community it was posted in - its rules, its size and who moderates it - and anywhere the same link was cross-posted. Takes the post's address or its number. Use it after a search or a feed to get the whole text before summarising it, or to check the room's rules before a person replies.

Inputs

PostposttextRequired
The post to read: its number, or its full address on the server this connection reads. Post numbers belong to the server that answers, so a link copied from a different Lemmy server is refused rather than quietly fetching an unrelated post - open the post on your own server and copy that link instead.

Get server details

Describe the Lemmy server this connection reads: its name, what it is for, its rules, how many people and communities it holds, how many are active this month, whether sign-ups are open and who its admins are. It needs nothing filled in, so it is also the one-step check that the connection works and points at the server you meant.

List comments on a post

Read a post's discussion, in the order a person would read it: every reply follows the comment it answers, and each one says how deep it sits. 'How many' counts whole conversations rather than rows, so ten means the top ten threads with their replies attached, not ten comments cut out of the middle. Feed the result to a summarising step to get the gist of a hundred-comment thread in one line.

Inputs

PostposttextRequired
The post to read: its number, or its full address on the server this connection reads. Post numbers belong to the server that answers, so a link copied from a different Lemmy server is refused rather than quietly fetching an unrelated post - open the post on your own server and copy that link instead.
Ordersorttext
What to put first. 'Hot' is what Lemmy shows when you open a post; 'Top' is the best-scoring opinions; 'Newest first' is what has just been said. One of: Hot (Hot: the discussion as Lemmy shows it), Top (Top: highest scoring first), New (Newest first), Old (Oldest first), Controversial (Controversial: voted hard both ways). Default: Hot.
How much of each threaddepthtext
How far down the replies to read. 'Top-level comments only' is the quickest read of what a post provoked; 'The whole thread' is what Lemmy itself shows. One of: 1 (Top-level comments only), 2 (Comments and their direct replies), 4 (Four levels deep), 8 (The whole thread). Default: 8.
How many threadslimitnumber
How many top-level conversations to return, from 1 to 50. Their replies come with them and are not counted against this. From 1 to 50. Default: 10.

Outputs

comment_idslist
Just the comment numbers, ready for a later step
commentslist
The discussion in reading order: every reply follows what it answers, and 'depth' says how far in it sits
countnumber
How many comments came back
depthnumber
How deep the replies were read

post_idnumber

List communities

Browse the communities your server carries, busiest or biggest first. Use it to find where a subject is discussed before you start watching it, or to keep a directory of the rooms your team cares about. Each one comes back with its handle, ready to paste into any other action here.

Inputs

Ordersorttext
What to put first. 'Busiest this month' is the practical answer to 'where is the conversation happening'; 'Biggest of all time' is the most subscribed, which is not always the same thing. One of: TopMonth (Busiest this month), TopWeek (Busiest this week), TopDay (Busiest today), TopAll (Biggest of all time), Active (Most active), Hot (Hot right now), New (Newest communities first), MostComments (Most comments). Default: TopMonth.
Where to looklistingtext
Whether to include communities on other servers. 'Everywhere' is everything your server can see, which is what makes Lemmy worth reading; 'This server only' is the communities it hosts itself. Lemmy also has 'Subscribed' and 'Moderator view', but both need an account logged in to the server - without one Lemmy quietly answers them with everything, so they are not offered. One of: All (Everywhere: this server and every server it federates with), Local (This server only: communities hosted here). Default: All.
Include NSFW communitiesinclude_nsfwtrue/false
Whether to include communities marked NSFW. Off by default.Default: false.
How manylimitnumber
How many results to return, from 1 to 50. Lemmy refuses more than 50 in one request; use the page number for the next 50.From 1 to 50. Default: 10.
Pagepagenumber
Which page of results to return, counting from 1. Leave it empty for the first page. Pages are cut by the 'How many' setting, so page 2 with 50 per page is results 51 to 100.At least 1. Default: 1.

List moderation actions

Read the public moderation log as one list of events in time order: posts removed, comments removed, people banned, moderators added, communities purged. Every entry says what happened, who did it, what it was about and the reason they gave, and carries a ready-made line to paste into a message. Use it to keep a record of what happens in a community you run, or to be told when something is removed.

Inputs

Communitycommunitytext
Narrow to one community. The list is the busiest communities on your server, and you can type any other community's handle beside it, such as !linux@lemmy.ml. Leave it empty to read the whole server. Always include the @server part: a bare 'linux' means your own server's community of that name.
Done bymoderatortext
Only actions taken by this moderator or admin. Their handle, profile address or id all work. Leave it empty for everybody.
Only these kindsactionstext
Which kinds of action to report. Choose nothing for all of them. Each kind covers the action and its reversal - 'Post removed or restored' returns both, and each event says which it was.One or more of: ModRemovePost (Post removed or restored), ModLockPost (Post locked or unlocked), ModFeaturePost (Post pinned or unpinned), ModRemoveComment (Comment removed or restored), ModBanFromCommunity (Someone banned from a community), ModBan (Someone banned from the whole server), ModAddCommunity (Moderator added or removed), ModTransferCommunity (Community handed to a new owner), ModRemoveCommunity (Community removed or restored), ModHideCommunity (Community hidden or unhidden), and 5 more.

List posts

Read a feed of posts: one community's, or everything your server can see. Each post comes back with its title, its text, the link it points at, its score, its comment count and its author's handle, plus its own address so a later step can link to it. Sort by what is busy, what is new or what is top this week. Set 'Only what is newer than' to the newest post from your last run and a scheduled workflow will only ever see what it has not seen before.

Inputs

Communitycommunitytext
Narrow to one community. The list is the busiest communities on your server, and you can type any other community's handle beside it, such as !linux@lemmy.ml. Leave it empty to read the whole server. Always include the @server part: a bare 'linux' means your own server's community of that name.
Ordersorttext
What to put first. 'Active' is Lemmy's own front-page order. Choose 'Newest first' for anything that has to catch every post, because that is the only order in which a page is a window in time. One of: Active (Active: busiest discussions first), Hot (Hot: rising right now), New (Newest first), Scaled (Scaled: hot, but fairer to small communities), TopDay (Top today), TopWeek (Top this week), TopMonth (Top this month), TopYear (Top this year), TopAll (Top of all time), MostComments (Most comments), NewComments (Most recently replied to), Controversial (Controversial: voted hard both ways). Default: Active.
Only what is newer thanposted_afterdate and time
Only return things published after this moment. This is how a scheduled workflow avoids re-reading what it has already seen: keep the newest 'published' value from the last run and feed it back in here. Leaving it empty returns everything on the page. Setting it sorts newest-first unless you choose another order, because no other order makes 'since' mean anything.
Default: 1.

Search Lemmy

Search your server and everything it federates with, for posts, comments, communities or people. This is the brand- and topic-monitoring step: search your product's name, narrow to a community or an author, set 'Only what is newer than' to the last run, and a scheduled workflow reports only what is new. Leaving the text empty is allowed and useful - an empty search of one community, newest first, is 'what has just been said in here'.

Inputs

Search forquerytext
The words to look for. Leave it empty to get everything, which only makes sense alongside a community and a newest-first order.
Look forlook_fortext
What kind of thing to find. 'Posts linking to a web address' searches the links posts point at rather than their words, which is how to find who has shared a particular page. One of: posts, comments, communities, people, url (Posts linking to a web address), everything (Everything at once). Default: posts.
Communitycommunitytext
Narrow to one community. The list is the busiest communities on your server, and you can type any other community's handle beside it, such as !linux@lemmy.ml. Leave it empty to read the whole server. Always include the @server part: a bare 'linux' means your own server's community of that name.
Written byauthortext
Only things written by this person. Their handle (@ruud@lemmy.world), their profile address or their id all work. Leave it empty for everybody.
Ordersorttext
What to put first. 'Top of all time' surfaces the best-known matches; 'Newest first' is what you want for monitoring. Default: TopAll.
Default: 1.
