Actions

ActionWhat it does
Find nearby places by categoryList every place of one kind near a location: all the cafes, every hotel, the nearest petrol stations.
Find the address at a pointTurn latitude and longitude into the address and place names at that spot: the street address, and the neighborhood, city, postcode, region and country containing it.
Geocode a list of addressesGeocode many addresses at once: a spreadsheet column, a list of branches, the results of an earlier step.
Geocode an addressTurn an address, postcode or place name into latitude and longitude, plus a cleaned-up standard address and every layer around it: street, neighborhood, city, postcode, region and country, each as its own field.
Get directionsRoute between two points, optionally through stops on the way.
Get the area reachable in a given timeThe area you can reach from a point within a set travel time: an isochrone.
Get travel times between many pointsTravel time and distance from every origin to every destination, in one request.
List place categoriesEvery category 'Find nearby places by category' accepts, with the id to pass and the name it goes by.
Put stops in the fastest orderGiven a set of stops, work out the quickest order to visit them all: the travelling-salesman problem, solved.
Search for placesSearch for businesses, landmarks and addresses by name: "Blue Bottle Coffee", "Heathrow Terminal 5", "pharmacy".

Find nearby places by category

List every place of one kind near a location: all the cafes, every hotel, the nearest petrol stations. Returns up to 25 places with their coordinates, address, phone number, website, opening hours and how far away they are. Pick the category from the dropdown, which is Mapbox's own live list.

Find the address at a point

Turn latitude and longitude into the address and place names at that spot: the street address, and the neighborhood, city, postcode, region and country containing it. Use it to label GPS readings, delivery pings or map clicks with somewhere a person can read.

Inputs

PointpointtextRequired
The point to look up, written as "latitude, longitude", for example "40.7128,-74.0060". Latitude first, the way a phone or Google Maps shows it.

Geocode a list of addresses

Geocode many addresses at once: a spreadsheet column, a list of branches, the results of an earlier step. Every address given comes back in the order it was sent, matched or not, each beside the text it was looked up under, and the counts say how many matched. Far cheaper and faster than geocoding each address in a loop.

Inputs

AddressesaddresseslistRequired
The addresses to look up, one per entry. Up to 1,000: they are sent to Mapbox in batches automatically.
Limit to countriescountrieslist
Only match addresses in these countries. One or more of: af (Afghanistan), al (Albania), dz (Algeria), ad (Andorra), ao (Angola), ag (Antigua and Barbuda), ar (Argentina), am (Armenia), au (Australia), at (Austria), and 189 more.
Only match these kinds of placetypeslist

Leave empty to match anything. One or more of: address (Street address), street, neighborhood, locality (Locality (sub-city district)), place (Place (city, town, village)), postcode, district (District (larger than a city)), region (Region (state, province)), country.

Geocode an address

Turn an address, postcode or place name into latitude and longitude, plus a cleaned-up standard address and every layer around it: street, neighborhood, city, postcode, region and country, each as its own field. Use it to put a spreadsheet of addresses on a map, to normalise addresses typed by hand, or to get the coordinates the routing actions need.

Inputs

Address or placeaddresstextRequired
What to look up: a street address, a postcode, or a place name. For example "1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington DC" or "Kyoto, Japan".
Limit to countriescountrieslist
Only match addresses in these countries. Worth setting when a place name exists in several: there is a Paris in France and one in Texas.
Restrict what can be matched. Leave empty to match anything. Choosing "Street address" keeps a partial address from matching the city it is in.One or more of: address (Street address), street, neighborhood, locality (Locality (sub-city district)), place (Place (city, town, village)), postcode, district (District (larger than a city)), region (Region (state, province)), country.
Prefer results nearproximitytext

Get directions

Route between two points, optionally through stops on the way. Returns the distance, the travel time, turn-by-turn instructions, and a leg-by-leg breakdown between stops. Driving routes use live traffic by default, and can be asked for a departure or arrival time to get a prediction for then instead of now.

Inputs

StartorigintextRequired
Where the route starts, written as "latitude, longitude", for example "37.7749,-122.4194". Use "Geocode an address" first to turn an address into a point.
EnddestinationtextRequired
Where the route ends, written as "latitude, longitude".
Stops along the waywaypointslist
Points to visit between the start and the end, in the order given, each written as "latitude, longitude". Leave empty for a direct route. Up to 23.
Travel modeprofiletext
How the trip is made. Driving with live traffic gives the most accurate time for a trip starting now.One of: driving-traffic (Driving (with live traffic)), driving, walking, cycling. Default: driving-traffic.
Avoidavoidlist
Road types to keep off the route. Driving only: ignored for walking and cycling. Best effort: Mapbox will still use one if it is the only way through. One or more of: toll (Toll roads), motorway (Motorways / highways), ferry (Ferries), unpaved (Unpaved roads), cash_only_tolls (Cash-only tolls), tunnel (Tunnels), country_border (Country border crossings), state_border (State border crossings).
Departure timedepart_atdate and time
Leave at this time instead of now, and get the travel time predicted for then. Driving only. Cannot be combined with an arrival time.
Arrival timearrive_bydate and time
Work backwards from arriving at this time. Driving only, and it switches off live traffic because Mapbox answers arrival-time routes from historical data. Cannot be combined with a departure time.
Include turn-by-turn stepsinclude_stepstrue/false
Return each instruction along the route. Turn off for a smaller result when only the distance and time are needed.Default: true.
Include alternative routesalternativestrue/false
Also return up to two other routes that are close in time but meaningfully different. They may not exist.Default: false.
Languagelanguagetext
The language for the turn-by-turn instructions. Defaults to English. One of: ar (Arabic (ar)), az (Azerbaijani (az)), bn (Bengali (bn)), bs (Bosnian (bs)), ca (Catalan (ca)), cs (Czech (cs)), da (Danish (da)), de (German (de)), el (Greek (el)), en (English (en)), and 43 more.

Outputs

alternative_routeslist
Other routes, when they were asked for.
distance_metersnumber
Total route distance in meters.
distance_texttext
Readable distance, e.g. '51.2 km'.
duration_secondsnumber
Estimated travel time in seconds.
duration_texttext
Readable travel time, e.g. '41 min'.
duration_typical_secondsnumber
Travel time under typical conditions, ignoring today's traffic. Driving with traffic only.
foundtrue/false
Whether a route was found.
geometrytext
The route line as an encoded polyline (precision 5).
legslist
One entry per stop-to-stop segment.
profiletext
The travel mode the route was built for.
reasontext
Why no route was found, when there wasn't one.
stepslist
Turn-by-turn instructions, in order.
waypointslist
Each given point as Mapbox snapped it to a road.

Get the area reachable in a given time

The area you can reach from a point within a set travel time: an isochrone. Use it to draw a delivery or service zone, to show a 15-minute walk from a shop, or as a catchment to test addresses against. Returns one outline per travel time asked for, largest first, as GeoJSON polygons ready to draw on a map.

Inputs

Center pointcentertextRequired
The point to measure out from, written as "latitude, longitude".
Travel timesminuteslistRequired
How far out to draw, in travel time. Choose up to four; each becomes its own outline. One or more of: 5 (5 minutes), 10 (10 minutes), 15 (15 minutes), 20 (20 minutes), 30 (30 minutes), 45 (45 minutes), 60 (60 minutes).
Travel modeprofiletext
How the travel is done. One of: driving-traffic (Driving (with live traffic)), driving, walking, cycling. Default: driving.
Avoidavoidlist
Road types to keep out of the area. Driving only: ignored for walking and cycling. One or more of: toll (Toll roads), motorway (Motorways / highways), ferry (Ferries), unpaved (Unpaved roads), cash_only_tolls (Cash-only tolls).
Departure timedepart_atdate and time
Draw the area for leaving at this time rather than now, so it reflects the traffic expected then. Driving only.

Outputs

area_countnumber
How many outlines were returned.
areaslist
One outline per travel time, largest first.
center_latitudenumber
Latitude the area was measured from.
center_longitudenumber
Longitude the area was measured from.

Get travel times between many points

Travel time and distance from every origin to every destination, in one request. This is what answers 'which of our depots is closest to each customer', 'which technician should take this job', or 'which of these flats are within 20 minutes of the office'. Results come back both as a grid and as one row per pair, which is the form a filter or a sort can read. Leave the destinations empty to measure every point against every other.

Inputs

From these pointsoriginslistRequired
The points to measure from, each written as "latitude, longitude".
To these pointsdestinationslist
The points to measure to, each written as "latitude, longitude". Leave empty to measure every origin against every other origin.
Travel modeprofiletext
How the trips are made. Driving with live traffic is limited to 10 points in total; the others allow 25.One of: driving-traffic (Driving (with live traffic)), driving, walking, cycling. Default: driving.
Measuremeasuretext
What to return for each pair of points. One of: duration (Travel time only), distance (Distance only), both (Travel time and distance). Default: duration.

Outputs

destination_countnumber
How many points were measured to.
destinationslist
Each destination as snapped to a road.
distances_meterslist
Distances in meters as a grid, laid out the same way. Empty unless distances were asked for.
durations_secondslist
Travel times in seconds as a grid: row i, column j is origin i to destination j. Null where there is no route.
foundtrue/false
Whether a matrix was returned.
origin_countnumber
How many points were measured from.
originslist
Each origin as Mapbox snapped it to a road.
pairslist
The same numbers as one row per origin/destination pair, the form to filter or sort on.
profiletext
The travel mode used.
reasontext
Why no matrix was returned, when there wasn't one.

Start and endtrip_shapetext
Where the trip should begin and end.One of: round_trip_from_first (Round trip: start and end at the first stop), round_trip_anywhere (Round trip: start anywhere (shortest loop)), one_way_first_to_last (One way: start at the first stop, end at the last). Default: round_trip_from_first.
Include turn-by-turn stepsinclude_stepstrue/false
Return each driving instruction as well as the order. Off by default: the order is usually the point.Default: false.

stops_in_orderlist
The stops sorted into visiting order. 'input_index' says which given stop each one was.
trip_shapetext
How the trip was asked to begin and end.
visit_orderlist
The positions of the given stops in visiting order: [0, 2, 1] means visit the first, then the third, then the second.

Search for places

Search for businesses, landmarks and addresses by name: "Blue Bottle Coffee", "Heathrow Terminal 5", "pharmacy". Returns each place's coordinates, full address, categories, phone number, website and opening hours. Set 'Near' to search somewhere specific; without it Mapbox guesses from where the request came from, which for a workflow is a data centre.

Inputs

Search forquerytextRequired
What to search for: a business name, a landmark, an address, or a kind of place such as "hardware store".
Nearneartext
Where to search. Either a place name such as "Seattle" or "SoHo, London", or a point written as "latitude, longitude". Strongly recommended: without it results are biased to wherever the request came from.
Only these categoriescategorieslist
Only return places in these categories. The list is Mapbox's own; use the refresh button to re-fetch it.
Only these kinds of resulttypeslist
Restrict what can come back. Choose "Point of interest" to get only businesses and landmarks, never a street or a city. One or more of: poi (Point of interest (business, landmark)), address (Street address), street, neighborhood, locality (Locality (sub-city district)), place (Place (city, town, village)), city, postcode, district (District (larger than a city)), region (Region (state, province)), and 3 more.
Limit to countriescountrieslist
Only return places in these countries. One or more of: af (Afghanistan), al (Albania), dz (Algeria), ad (Andorra), ao (Angola), ag (Antigua and Barbuda), ar (Argentina), am (Armenia), au (Australia), at (Austria), and 189 more.
Languagelanguagetext
The language to return names in. Defaults to English. One of: ar (Arabic (ar)), az (Azerbaijani (az)), bn (Bengali (bn)), bs (Bosnian (bs)), ca (Catalan (ca)), cs (Czech (cs)), da (Danish (da)), de (German (de)), el (Greek (el)), en (English (en)), and 43 more.
Only places open right nowopen_nowtrue/false
Leave out places that are closed at the moment the step runs. Only affects places Mapbox has hours for.Default: false.
Maximum resultslimitnumber
How many places to return, at most 10.From 1 to 10. Default: 10.

Outputs

attributiontext
Mapbox's required attribution string.
foundtrue/false
