Look up official US disaster information from FEMA's open data. Find the federal disasters declared for any state or county since 1953 and what each one unlocked, then follow the money: the rebuilding projects FEMA funded, the grants that went to households, and the work paid for to reduce the damage next time. Check whether a community takes part in the National Flood Insurance Program, how many of its homes carry flood insurance, and what has been paid out there before. Search the archive of public emergency alerts, and see which federal agencies were sent in. Dates come back as plain dates, money in dollars, and FEMA's internal codes as words. No account or API key is required.

Actions

ActionWhat it does
Check flood insurance statusFind out whether a community takes part in the National Flood Insurance Program, and so whether flood insurance can be bought there at all.
Find disaster declarationsSearch every federally declared disaster since 1953: by state, county, kind of disaster, when it was declared, and which kinds of help it unlocked.
Find emergency alertsSearch the archive of public warnings sent through IPAWS, the system behind the alerts on American phones, radio and television: tornado warnings, evacuation orders, child abduction emergencies and the rest.
Find federal mission assignmentsFind which other federal agencies FEMA sent in for a disaster, what each was asked to do, and what it was paid.
Find hazard mitigation projectsFind the work FEMA funded to reduce the damage from the next disaster: buying out flood-prone homes, raising buildings, safe rooms, flood walls, backup generators.
Find public assistance projectsFind the rebuilding work FEMA funded after a disaster (debris removal, roads and bridges, schools, water systems) and what each project cost.
Get disaster detailsEverything FEMA publishes about one disaster: what it was and when, which programs it turned on, every county it covered, and how much has been approved or obligated under each program.
Get disaster housing assistance for an areaAdd up the housing help FEMA gave households in one area: how many applied, how many were approved, and how much was paid for repairs, rent and other needs.
Get flood insurance claim historyWhat the National Flood Insurance Program has paid out in one area since 1970: how many claims, how much in total, the average and the largest, a year-by-year breakdown, and the floods and causes behind them.
Get flood insurance coverage ratesHow many homes in a county actually carry flood insurance, as a share of all homes and as a share of the homes inside the mapped flood zone.

Check flood insurance status

Find out whether a community takes part in the National Flood Insurance Program, and so whether flood insurance can be bought there at all. Also returns whether it has been suspended, the discount its residents earn through the Community Rating System, and when its flood maps were drawn.

Find disaster declarations

Search every federally declared disaster since 1953: by state, county, kind of disaster, when it was declared, and which kinds of help it unlocked. FEMA stores a declaration as one row per county; this returns one result per disaster, with the counties it covers listed inside, newest first.

Inputs

Statestatetext
Only disasters declared for this state, territory or freely associated state. Leave unset for the whole country. One of: AL (Alabama), AK (Alaska), AS (American Samoa), AZ (Arizona), AR (Arkansas), CA (California), CO (Colorado), CT (Connecticut), DE (Delaware), DC (District of Columbia), and 49 more.
County or areacountytext
Only disasters that named this county, parish, borough, tribe or city. Type the name on its own: 'Buncombe', not 'Buncombe County'.
Kinds of disasterincident_typeslist
Only these kinds of disaster. Leave every box clear for all of them. One or more of: Biological, Chemical, Coastal Storm, Dam/Levee Break (Dam or levee break), Drought, Earthquake, Fire, Fishing Losses, Flood, Freezing, and 17 more.
Kinds of declarationdeclaration_typeslist
Only these kinds of declaration. A major disaster unlocks the most help; an emergency declaration is narrower and often comes first. Leave every box clear for all three. One or more of: DR (Major disaster (the full range of federal help)), EM (Emergency (limited help, usually during an event)), FM (Fire management assistance (fighting a wildfire)).
Help that was offeredprogramslist
Only disasters that turned on all of these programs. Individual Assistance is the one that matters when the question is whether households can claim. Leave every box clear for any.One or more of: individual_assistance (Individual Assistance (grants to households)), public_assistance (Public Assistance (rebuilding public infrastructure)), hazard_mitigation (Hazard Mitigation (funding to reduce future damage)).
Declared on or afterdeclared_on_or_afterdate
Only disasters declared on or after this date. Use this to watch for new declarations.
Declared on or beforedeclared_on_or_beforedate
Only disasters declared on or before this date.
Disaster numberdisaster_numbernumber
Only this one disaster, by its FEMA number. Usually left empty; use 'Get disaster details' when you already know the number. At least 1.

Find emergency alerts

Search the archive of public warnings sent through IPAWS, the system behind the alerts on American phones, radio and television: tornado warnings, evacuation orders, child abduction emergencies and the rest. Search by when they went out, what they were about, how severe and how urgent, and the area they covered. Tests and exercises are left out unless you ask for them. Placeareatext
Only alerts covering a place whose description contains this text: a county, a city, or a state's two-letter code.

Narrow to one city or town.
ZIP codezip_codetext
Narrow to a single five-digit ZIP code.
Disaster numberdisaster_numbernumber
