Read The Guardian with its own Open Platform API: every article, video, gallery and live blog it has published since 1999, plus the tags, sections and regional editions behind them. Search the archive by words, phrase, section, tag, journalist or date range, follow a subject over a rolling window for a scheduled workflow, count how much is being written about it and compare several subjects side by side, pull one article's full text and pictures, follow a live blog update by update, and read the editors' picks and most-viewed lists from any edition's front page.

Actions

ActionWhat it does
Compare topicsCompare how much the Guardian is writing about several subjects (two to five of them) over the same window, ranked, each with its share of the combined coverage and its newest headline.

Get an articleGet everything the Guardian holds for one article: the full text, the headline and standfirst, the byline and every contributor, the tags, the pictures and video with their captions and credits, the word count, and the rights that say whether it may be republished.

Get most-viewed articlesGet what Guardian readers are actually reading right now, most-read first, for a regional edition or for one section.
Get next articlesContinue a search past the point where page numbers stop working.
Get related articlesGet the Guardian's own 'more on this story' list for an article: the related content it generates from the article's tags, plus the story package editors assemble by hand for a running story.

List sectionsList every section the Guardian groups its content into, around eighty of them, from Politics and Environment to Football and Food, each with the id the section filters take and the regional editions it appears in.

Search recent articlesSearch Guardian content published inside a window that moves with the clock (the last 6 hours, the last day, the last week), counted back from the moment the step runs.
Search tagsSearch the tags every piece of Guardian content is filed under, more than 70,000 of them: subjects, journalists, series, tones, media types.

Compare topics

Compare how much the Guardian is writing about several subjects (two to five of them) over the same window, ranked, each with its share of the combined coverage and its newest headline. Use it for share of voice against competitors, or to see which of several stories is getting the attention.

Inputs

TopicstopicslistRequired
The subjects to compare: between two and five. Each one is a search in its own right, so phrases and AND/OR/NOT work here too.
How far backwindowtext
How recent an article has to be, counted back from the moment the step runs, so a workflow on a schedule keeps looking at fresh news instead of at one fixed date. One of: 1h (Last hour), 6h (Last 6 hours), 12h (Last 12 hours), 24h (Last 24 hours), 2d (Last 2 days), 7d (Last 7 days), 14d (Last 14 days), 30d (Last 30 days), 90d (Last 3 months), 365d (Last year). Default: 24h.
Sectionssectionslist
Optional. Only include content from these sections of the Guardian. An article matches if it is in any one of them. The list comes from your connection.

Count articles

Count how much the Guardian has published on a subject, and name the newest piece. It costs a single request whether the answer is three articles or thirty thousand, so it is the cheap check to branch a workflow on: alert someone when coverage of your organisation spikes, or skip the rest of the run when there is nothing new.

Inputs

Search forquerytext
Words to look for anywhere in the article. Put a phrase in double quotes for an exact match ("mitochondrial donation"), and combine terms with AND, OR and NOT, for example: debate AND (economy OR immigration). Optional: leave it empty to take everything that matches the other filters.
Sectionssectionslist
Optional. Only include content from these sections of the Guardian. An article matches if it is in any one of them. The list comes from your connection.
Tagstagslist
Optional. Only include content carrying these tags. A tag is the path part of a Guardian tag page, such as technology/apple or profile/georgemonbiot; use the Search tags action to find them.
How far backwindowtext
Optional. Count only what was published inside a window counted back from the moment the step runs. Overrides the two dates below when it is set.One of: 1h (Last hour), 6h (Last 6 hours), 12h (Last 12 hours), 24h (Last 24 hours), 2d (Last 2 days), 7d (Last 7 days), 14d (Last 14 days), 30d (Last 30 days), 90d (Last 3 months), 365d (Last year).

Search articles

Search everything the Guardian has published since 1999: more than two million articles, plus video, galleries and live blogs, with every filter the Content API offers. Words and phrases, which part of the article to match them in, sections, tags, a published-between range, language, newsroom, star rating and reuse rights. Each result comes back with its headline, byline, summary, image, word count and tags, and optionally the full article text.

Search inquery_fieldslist
Optional. Which parts of an article the words have to appear in. Leave it empty to search all of them, which is usually what you want; narrowing to the headline finds articles that are about a subject rather than ones that merely mention it.One or more of: headline, standfirst, trailText (Summary), byline, body (Article text), thumbnail (Image caption).
Sectionssectionslist

Optional. Only include content published on or before this date.
Dates refer touse_datetext
Which date the published-between filter is measured against. Search recent articles

Search Guardian content published inside a window that moves with the clock (the last 6 hours, the last day, the last week), counted back from the moment the step runs. This is the search to put on a schedule: a fixed date range would return the same articles on every run, while this one always looks at what is new.

Tagstagslist
Optional. Only include content carrying these tags. A tag is the path part of a Guardian tag page, such as technology/apple or profile/georgemonbiot; use the Search tags action to find them.
Order results byorder_bytext
How to order the results. The Guardian defaults to best match when you search for words and to newest first when you do not.One of: newest (Newest first), oldest (Oldest first), relevance (Best match first).
Results per pagepage_sizenumber
How many results to return, from 1 to 50.From 1 to 50. Default: 10.
Include the article textinclude_bodytrue/false

Search the tags every piece of Guardian content is filed under, more than 70,000 of them: subjects, journalists, series, tones, media types. Name starts withstarts_withtext
