Search and retrieve public documents and reports from the World Bank's Documents & Reports collection using the free, keyless World Bank WDS API. No account or API key required. Look up documents by topic, country, type, language, or date; fetch a single record by id; and list facet values to discover how to filter.

Get a document

Fetch a single Documents & Reports record by its document id (the 'id' returned by the search action) or by the long number at the end of its documents.worldbank.org URL.

List facet values

List the most common values (up to 100 per field, with counts) found across all matching documents for one or more facetable fields, for example the countries or languages present. Handy for discovering the exact values to filter a search on.

Search documents

Search the World Bank Documents & Reports corpus. Use a free-text query and/or narrow by country, document type, language, project, title, or date range. Results are paginated and each record includes its title, URL, and any extra fields you request.

Inputs

Search queryquerytext
Free-text search (the API's 'qterm'). Matches a document's title, abstract, report or project number, country, and other core fields, for example 'wind turbine'. Every word must match; wrap words in double quotes to match an exact phrase. Leave empty to match all documents (newest first).
Countrycountrytext
Restrict to documents whose country field exactly matches this name, capitalization included, for example 'Argentina'. Match several countries by separating them with a caret, for example 'Russian Federation^Armenia'. 'List facet values' shows the exact names.
Document typedocument_typetext
Restrict to an exact document type, capitalization included, for example 'Procurement Plan' or 'Project Appraisal Document'.
Languagelanguagetext
Restrict to documents in this language, capitalization included, for example 'English' or 'French'.
Project IDproject_idtext
Restrict to the documents of a World Bank project, by the ID on its projects.worldbank.org page, for example 'P178329'. Separate several with commas.
Title containstitletext
Restrict to documents whose display title contains any of these words, for example 'wind energy'. Wrap them in double quotes, as in '"wind energy"', to require the exact phrase.
From datestart_datetext
Only documents dated on or after this date. Use 'YYYY-MM-DD' or 'MM-DD-YYYY', for example '2018-01-01'. Leave empty for no earliest date.
To dateend_datetext
Only documents dated on or before this date. Use 'YYYY-MM-DD' or 'MM-DD-YYYY', for example '2018-03-30'. Leave empty for no latest date.
Extra fieldsfieldstext
Comma-separated list of fields to return per record, for example 'docdt,count,authors'. The id, guid, title and URLs are always returned too. Leave empty for a standard set (title, date, country, type, language, abstract, report and project numbers, and URLs), or use '*' for every field the API holds, a much larger response.
Sort bysort_bytext
Field to sort by. Defaults to relevance when a query is given, otherwise document date (newest first).One of: docdt (Document date), docna (Document name).
Sort orderordertext
Sort direction. Only applies when 'Sort by' is set.One of: desc (Descending (newest / Z-A first)), asc (Ascending (oldest / A-Z first)).
Results per pagerowsnumber
How many documents to return, from 1 to 100. Defaults to 10.From 1 to 100.
Start atoffsetnumber
Zero-based index of the first result to return, for paging, up to 100,000. Defaults to 0. For example, 20 starts the second page when returning 20 rows.From 0 to 100000.
