xeno-canto
App · Research & Academia · 6 actions
Search xeno-canto, a community collection of more than a million wildlife sound recordings from around the world: birds, grasshoppers and crickets, bats, frogs and land mammals. Find recordings of a species by English or scientific name, filtered by country, sound type, quality rating, length, date and licence; find recordings made near a place; draw one at random; get a recording's details, sonograms and annotations; and download its audio. Needs a free xeno-canto API key.
Actions
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Advanced search | Search with xeno-canto's own search tags, for anything Search recordings has no filter for: background species, remarks, recording method, equipment, sample rate, coordinates, annotations and more. |
| Download a recording | Download a recording's audio, the recordist's original MP3 or WAV file, as a file a later step can attach to an email, post to a chat or save to storage, with its details and citation. |
| Find recordings near a place | Find recordings made near a point, given by latitude and longitude, optionally only of one species or group, sound type, quality rating or recent upload date. |
| Get a random recording | Draw one recording at random from all that match a species, group, country, world area, sound type, quality rating or licence, such as a top rated bird song from Kenya for a daily post. |
| Get a recording | Get one recording by its catalogue number or link, with everything xeno-canto records about it: species, recordist, place and date, sound type, quality, length, audio and sonogram links, licence, citation, background species, remarks, equipment, and any annotations marking where each species can be heard. |
| Search recordings | Search xeno-canto's recordings by species, English or scientific name, and by group, country, world area, sound type, sex, life stage, quality rating, length, year recorded, upload date, recordist and licence, best rated first. |
Advanced search
Search with xeno-canto's own search tags, for anything Search recordings has no filter for: background species, remarks, recording method, equipment, sample rate, coordinates, annotations and more. Each term is a tag and a value, such as cnt:brazil or q:A, and every term must match.
Inputs
- Query
querytextRequired - A query in xeno-canto's search tags: each term a tag, a colon and a value, with double quotes around a value of several words or with an operator, as in sp:"larus fuscus" cnt:netherlands len:"<30". Every term must match. The tags are listed at https://xeno-canto.org/help/search. A value xeno-canto would silently ignore for type, sex, stage or method is refused.
- Results per page
per_pagenumber - How many recordings to return at once, from 50 to 500. Leave empty for 50: xeno-canto sends no fewer. From 50 to 500.
- Page
pagenumber - Which page of results to return, starting at 1. Leave empty for the first page. A page past the last one comes back empty but still gives the totals. At least 1.
Outputs
last_pagenumber- The last page's number.
next_pagenumber- The next page's number, or null on the last page: the value to loop on.
pagenumber- This page's number.
per_pagenumber- How many recordings a page holds.
querytext- The query sent, in xeno-canto's search tags, which Advanced search takes as it is.
recordingslist- The recordings on this page, best rated first, newest first within each rating.
total_recordingsnumber- How many recordings match, over all pages.
total_speciesnumber- How many species they are of.

}Find recordings near a place
Find recordings made near a point, given by latitude and longitude, optionally only of one species or group, sound type, quality rating or recent upload date. Each recording comes with its distance from the point, or null for a restricted species whose location xeno-canto withholds.
Inputs
- Latitude
latitudenumberRequired - The point's latitude in decimal degrees, from -90 to 90.From -90 to 90.
- Longitude
longitudenumberRequired - The point's longitude in decimal degrees, from -180 to 180.From -180 to 180.
- Within (km)
within_kmnumber - How far to look from the point, north, south, east and west, in kilometres from 0.1 to 500. Leave empty for 10. The area searched is a square, so its corners reach about 1.4 times as far; each recording's distance_km says exactly how far it is.From 0.1 to 500.0.
- Species
speciestext - The species to find, by English name (Eurasian Wren) or scientific name (Troglodytes troglodytes); or a subspecies (Larus fuscus graellsii), genus (Larus) or family (Laridae). Part of an English name finds every species whose name contains it: wren finds all the wrens. English names are xeno-canto's, which follow the IOC list for birds, so Turdus merula is the Common Blackbird. Also takes a recording from another xeno-canto step, to find more of its species.
- Group
grouptext - Only this group of animals. Soundscapes record a whole place, many species at once. One of:
birds, grasshoppers(Grasshoppers and crickets),bats, frogs, land mammals, soundscape(Soundscapes (whole places, many species at once)). - Sound type
sound_typetext - Only recordings of this kind of sound. Some belong to one group only, such as echolocation to bats and calling song to grasshoppers; the list says which. One of:
aberrant,advertisement call(Advertisement call (frogs)),agonistic call(Agonistic call (land mammals)),alarm call,begging call,call,calling song(Calling song (grasshoppers)),courtship song(Courtship song (grasshoppers)),dawn song(Dawn song (birds)),defensive call(Defensive call (land mammals)), and 20 more. - Minimum quality
minimum_qualitytext - Only recordings rated at least this well. The community rates recordings from A (best) to E; unrated ones are left out when this is set.One of:
A(A (best only)),B(B or better),C(C or better),D(D or better). - Uploaded in the last days
uploaded_in_last_daysnumber - Only recordings uploaded in the last this many days: 1 is today's uploads, 7 the last week. The way to a regular digest of new recordings. At least 1.

Afghanistan,Albania,Algeria,Andorra,Angola,Antarctica,Antigua & Departments,Argentina,Armenia,Australia, and 189 more. - World area
areatext - Only recordings made in this part of the world. One of:
africa,america(The Americas),asia,australia(Australasia and the Pacific),europe. - Sound type

}Search recordings
Search xeno-canto's recordings by species, English or scientific name, and by group, country, world area, sound type, sex, life stage, quality rating, length, year recorded, upload date, recordist and licence, best rated first. Returns each recording's details, audio and sonogram links, licence and citation, with how many recordings and species match.

speciestext - The species to find, by English name (Eurasian Wren) or scientific name (Troglodytes troglodytes); or a subspecies (Larus fuscus graellsii), genus (Larus) or family (Laridae). Part of an English name finds every species whose name contains it: wren finds all the wrens. English names are xeno-canto's, which follow the IOC list for birds, so Turdus merula is the Common Blackbird. Also takes a recording from another xeno-canto step, to find more of its species.
- Group

sextext - Only recordings whose animal is recorded as this sex. Most recordings do not say.One of:
female,male. - Life stage

- Maximum length (seconds)
max_length_secondsnumber - Only recordings at most this many seconds long.At least 0.
- Recorded from year
recorded_from_yearnumber - Only recordings made in this year or later. From 1800 to 2100.
